so, there's "hydro," which is a neat, 33-minute guitar groove that appears on a few different "cath carroll" eps. then there are some related little songs built on that groove: "hydroplane" (from the "yes she is my skinhead girl" 7"), "hydrofoil no. 1" (from the uk version of imperial ffrr), and "hydrofoil no. 4" (which is on the "b.p.m." cd).

meanwhile, the u.s. version of imperial has lyrics in the liner notes for something just called "hydrofoil." does this particular version exist somewhere? and are there any other versions floating around?

i only like the long "hydro" one, but i'm curious all the same.

Eyesore refers to a version "Hydrofoil No. 3" on the 45 that came with the Guernica LP, but it doesn't appear that there was a version simply called "Hydrofoil", and if so it certainly isn't on any of the 4AD issues.

Yes. "Hydrofoil No. 3" - from a bonus 7" included with the UK 12" pressing of Imperial.

Or, I should say, that is the version with these lyrics.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Saturday, 6 March 2004 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Just because I'm a twit and get off on these things: there's also a version of "Firecracker" that has lyrics - it's on the "Peel Sessions" boot 7".

And, I guess this is a somewhat appropriate place to mention that a friend and I once performed a 45 minute cover of "Hydro" to a bewildered audience (him on guitar, me on drums, plus a sampler providing another guitar drone).

Ernest P. (ernestp), Saturday, 6 March 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to mention that version of "Firecracker" actually but decided against it for some reason. It's fun.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Saturday, 6 March 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

cool! thanks for the info. guess i'll try to track down that bonus 7", if that's a reasonably doable feat. (i'm more of a malcom x park/twister/kustom karnal man, but i've gestured far enough in this direction that i may as well keep it up. *blows dusts off own copy of 'peel sessions' 7", places on turntable*)

a little while ago, i started trying to make an "annotated unrest," listing everything (bands, writers, filmmakers, singers, neighborhoods, record labels, etc.) referenced in unrest song titles/lyrics/liner notes/etc. over the years (discounting actual musical mimickry), but gave up, realizing that i was probably only "getting" about half of them, anyway. but if anyone ever wants to team up... (i'm just fascinated by the breadth of reference points.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Saturday, 6 March 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

also: does anyone know anything about the two air miami cassettes referenced in the "me. me. me." booklet? i've never seen them pop up anywhere. (i love the air miami album more than either "bpm"-era unrest lp, and would love to hear more material.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Saturday, 6 March 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

please say more about these Unrest-ings for me, the unitiated Unrest nerd.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 6 March 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I started an Unrest website many moons ago and it is still somewhat unfinished. It's on one of those free server thingies so it's unavailable a lot of the time due to bandwidth constraints, but you might want to try http://www33.brinkster.com/imperialffrr/.

I have been planning to move it again or reduce the number of images displayed to reduce bandwidth usage, but finding time is difficult.

If you'd like to contact me privately Morris I can help you hear some of the things you are missing.

I wish they'd put out a normal singles collection, because they have so much ephemera I never heard. Someone put a bunch of it on CD, but the CD flaked out. I've tried to go to that website before and its neve rworked. They have such little about them on the internet or win magazines or anytihng it seems unfair (although I know they have detractors and fully understad why).

All the droney or krauty or whatever they are songs they did I really like. Better than any Stereolab I've heard.

Then there is "Full Frequecy" the accapella thing, WTF? Imperial was bad enough, the vocals alone are just unbearrable.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 7 March 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that at least one of those Air Miami cassettes is demos for the actual album. It's on SLSK. I could be wrong (about the first part...there's definitely an Air Miami demos thing floating around).

dlp9001, Sunday, 7 March 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I also have a *really* irritating video of an Air Miami show. Shot so you can look directly up Mark's nose, and apparently from in front of the PA, so you can hear the instruments perfectly but virtually no vocals. Which is very frustrating 'cause it looks to be a great show.

No, you're right. 14 Songs & 16 Songs were demo tapes send to friends. Most of the songs were re-recorded for Me, Me, Me with a few exceptions (the great "Addidas My Ass," "Agent Molder is Here," "Dade County Cops Don't Quit," and a few more). Most of the demos are otherwise unreleased. A "Stop Sign" demo was included on the b-side of the "Airplane Rider" 7" single. The "World Cup Fever" demo came out on that remixes EP, and a "Neely" demo on a 4AD promo single. "Fight Song" was re-recorded for the TeebBeat comp Wakefield Vol. 1. "Pucker" was re-recorded for the 4AD comp All Virgos Are Mad (apparently a 10 minute mix exists but has never been released). "Nicola Six" was eventually transformed into "Flin Flon" from the first Flin Flon 7".

yeah, they're the kind of band that really really deserves a box set or a nice two-disc rareties/early years comp. (another example is sebadoh, much of whose best stuff is spread across 7"s.) of course, hunting down and collecting the actual singles themselves is fun, but i really enjoy a cool box set. (when will the great indie-rock nostalgia commodification begin? oh yeah, those pavement reissues...)

i find the b.p.m. disc to be a head-scratcher -- to me, it's almost unlistenable, but as i've said, that's not my favorite era, and so its ephemera does little for me. (i do love the "factory record" tracks on there -- that's one great ep.)

it does seem like unrest's stature has fallen somewhat sharply since their height of "popularity" in the mid-'90s. which is too bad, given what an absolutely incredible band they were!

morris pavilion (samjeff), Sunday, 7 March 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I got to see them twice...great shows both.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 March 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Unrest makes Unrest rarity collectors work for their rarities... which is funny, since most of the rarities are just improvised 1-2 minute songs composed on the fly. "Capezio Bowler" anyone?

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 7 March 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved Unrest, but given the recent three songs on Flin Flon's "Chicotoumi" CD collection, assuming they keep advancing, may surpass Unrest's height.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 7 March 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Stop making me want to buy CDs with money I don't have. Has anyone heard the new Mark Robinson CD?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 7 March 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

His track with Ghostface is pretty good

Kanyeah West Shepherd (Andy K), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha ha sped up Mark Robinson samples!

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread lives as proof that this metal thing is going too fucking far.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, there was the hardcore remix of Flin Flon's "Kamloops"... up go the devil horns.
