Holiday in Cambodia

The title is, indeed, a double-entendre. But what I'm reflecting on is: I was there last year for a while, and went to a "record store". ok, it only sold CDs, and they were all copied ($1.50-2), but the color copying of the sleeve was immaculate. Anyway, I found 1. a live Clash bootleg (good quality, though not my favorite tracks) 2. Richie Hawtin's "Dex, fx and a 909", and 3. a Plastic City compilation that I thought was deleted.

Anyone have any similar tales of unexpected finds in odd places?

I found a spectacular Sisters of Mercy vinyl bootleg in a tiny little shop in Venice, italy (featuring Andrew & the Boys butchering "Hush" by Deep Purple), though it was quite horribly scratched.

I am not very worldly, but I did find a Guru Guru CD in a really shitty St. Paul pawn shop.

i was wandering through a street market in bombay and found a mint copy of james brown's there it is lp. i carried it for 6 months carefully in my backpack, only to trip and accidently kick it when drunk at home. it is now in two pieces.

hah. that's such a sad story

when i was in Johanesburg, i researched where all the record stores were. the one i really wanted to go to was in the middle of the downtown where people just didn't go. supposedly everybody got mugged when they went there. the guy i was staying with said he'd take me, but he wouldn't come in with me, he'd just drop me off, and an hour come back and pick me up. i went in, the only white guy in the store (it was actually owned by Indian people). i went upstairs and it was like a dream come true. all the records were (because of the currency rate) a dollar a pop. old jazz albums, almost all of em sealed, multiple copies of each. i felt really weird walking around the store with an armful of records. the owner kept coming up to me telling me which ones were & weren't good. the whole time he was flipping a paperclip round and round in his mouth. a bunch of the other patrons were following me around because they could tell i had money. i walked out of there with 20-30 great soul and jazz records. impulse, max roach, cannonball adderley, stax, etc. stuff i still cherish with all my heart. if had more time i probably would have picked up two to three times more records. one guy even asked me to buy him a record which i did. when the hour was up, i walked downstairs, jumped directly in the car and went home.

I found an original stone cold mint Vietnamese copy of Black Sabbath's Paranoid once. I got it in the wilds of Montana at a pawn shop. G.I. Joe musta brought it back to the ranch.

I bought the UK pressing of Bruce's Born in the U.S.A. at a yard sale once, even though I already owned a copy. Irony is one of my favorite things.

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 5 March 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

erm, don't want to come across like an obssessive (and I feel somewhat calmed by the fact it's ilm) but JaXoN's experience reminds me of dreams I've had where I've stumbled across almost magical titles and prices...and the challenge is to remember or buy them all...

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 6 March 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I have that dream almost every night of the week. Literally. For real.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 6 March 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

phew

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Every time I have that dream I never actually get to buy any of the records. And when I wake up I can't remember what the records were. Then I'm always waiting for a bus that never arrives.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

My record dreams are endless. I won't bore anyone. But yeah, having no money/no time to look/can't see them properly...all these scenarios are a part of my nocturnal hell. Found some great ones the other night though. The covers were beautiful. And I still don't know why i had to wear a special jumpsuit before i was allowed to shop in this one great record store i had a dream about a couple weeks ago...

I was picking up trash in a small parking lot in a woodsy area and found a CD (Martika? Not someone I was into, anyway) I opened the case and inside was The Allman Brothers album from 1969 in perfect condition. A real keeper.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

My mate got the Cure "Killing An Arab" 7" in a market in Milton Keynes for 50p, 3 minutes after I had looked through the same box and missed it :(
Still, I got a mint "Dark Entries" on the same day :)

And yes, Milton Keynes does count as An Odd Place :P

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)
