for some reason i was in the mood to listen to DNA...i would never have guessed that would have ever happened.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Saturday, 6 March 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"tom's diner"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 March 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The songs are short, so even if you hate it, it's over before you know it.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 6 March 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

(doot doot Duh-DAH doot duh Duh-DAH, doot DAH-duh doot doot DAH-duh doot)

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 6 March 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Big reissue out this year, so I hear.

Always in the mood to listen to DNA. It's dated really well - more so than other no wave stuff, apart from maybe the Contortions.

Jason J, Saturday, 6 March 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Mars.

dlp9001, Saturday, 6 March 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The reissue already happened, i tried to find a copy, but couldn't, oh well, doubt I'm missing anything. I mean, can't just listen to the 2 DNA songs I have on repeat?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 6 March 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

does no wave matter? why? can anyone succinctly express its importance?

How do you quantify how it might "matter"? The No Wave "moment" is long gone, but if you're still moved/intrigued by the music, who care? It matters to you

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 6 March 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Mars

seconded and thirded.

ddb, Saturday, 6 March 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

horrible fun noise, hurrah

ferg (Ferg), Saturday, 6 March 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a DNA reissue? Was there anything on it apart from A Taste of DNA and the No New York tracks?

Chris F. (servoret), Saturday, 6 March 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i would never have guessed that would have ever happened.
Hippie. ;-)

"The reissue already happened, i tried to find a copy, but couldn't, oh well, doubt I'm missing anything. I mean, can't just listen to the 2 DNA songs I have on repeat?"

You sure this has already happened? Last I heard, it was due out in March, but I assumed it'd been put back because I hadn't seen anything about it. I think it was going to come out on No More Records. Hope it hasn't been and gone already - it was hard enough tracking down a copy of that Mars reissue.

Jason J, Saturday, 6 March 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm always in the mood for dna. best dna (not dna) record - arto / netto - pini pini. they should stick this on the comp. it's dynamite.

stirmonster, Saturday, 6 March 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

This DNA, however, should be avoided at all costs...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 6 March 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still completely captivated by the whole No Wave era (and often stroll by 77 White Street, vainly searching for long forgotten clues). I regard the No Wave scene with kinda the same befuddled reaction that the Jonestown Massacre conjures. How did were all these people on the same page? How did it all happen?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 6 March 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i think some instruments and complete lack of technique was involved, Alex. ;-)

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 6 March 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, did you ever read this-

http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0314/kogan.php

Really, really great article.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Missed this. Thanks, Broheems!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It's long, but it's worth it. A bird's-eye view, if you will.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

You sure this has already happened? Last I heard, it was due out in March, but I assumed it'd been put back because I hadn't seen anything about it.

Yeah, ok I get mars and dna confused (can't hardly blame me for that!). I read one of the guys from I think dna, complaining about not getting any money from the No New York import from Japan too, so I didn't want to buy it (not to mention its outrageous price).

Anyway, I share Alex in NYC's fascination w/the scene, though I imagine I know much less about it and have heard much less of it all, but def. something I'd like to get more into.

I don't know if the idea that there were all these musically untrained artists and whomever deciding to start bands is romanticized at all or not. And how much they all hung out and why didn't Lydia Lunch ever do a song w/ESG, etc.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 6 March 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

saw DNA live half-a-dozen times in 81-82, they were great and far more MUSICAL than their no wave reputation suggests. whatever happened to tim wright? he was the rocker in the group.

lovebug starski, Saturday, 6 March 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The guy complaining about not getting paid was Robin Crutchfield, who wrote a review of the No New York reissue on Amazon. If it helps, please note that *he* bought a copy, so I think it's probably ok for you to! You could always buy a Dark Day CD if you want to spread the support around.

There's an article on Mars in this month's Wire.

dlp9001, Sunday, 7 March 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I am always in the mood.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 7 March 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh how I wish you could see them playing in the records. For some reason I only enjoy their music (and very much)when paired with that live perfomance in the Downtown 81 film, rendering me into a mtv junkie. Are there any videos or dvd out there?

mario, Sunday, 7 March 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm coming to the conclusion that No Wave was rubbish

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 7 March 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm coming to the conclusion that No Wave was even better than I previously thought.

stirmonster, Sunday, 7 March 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I'd be curious to hear why people like this band.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

On the table of contents page of the new Perfect Sound Forever it says a DNA reissue is out May 11 on Forced Exposure.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Not Moving is far and away the best song on No New York, Egomaniac's Kiss and Flip Your Face are closely behind. I didn't like Teenage Jesus and The Jerk's stuff at all. Lydia Lunch is really overrated.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Response to Mark, why I like them: They make cool interesting sounds and their songs are weird and different and they're really good and also yes I know Applejacks don't taste like apples but I don't give a shit.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

why i like them?

because after 20 years of listening to them, they STILL give me a hard on.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got the reissue in the mail.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, that's great news, about the reissue. I hadn't heard. Why do I like them? Hmm, let me put on Last Live and get back to you.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Just curious. I have a copy of this compilation. Haven't listened to it all through yet so I should probably hold my tongue, but... it's definitely "interesting" and strikes me as very original for the time (or any time really.) And I can see how so much music since has borrowed from it. But in terms of emotional response I'm just completely flat, and the only real visceral reaction is slight irritation.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got some wicked video footage of them in the Tim Wright period. Watching them play may be a relevant precurser to the type of experiance people have watching Lightning Bolt or Orthrelm play, minus the prog/metal/rock etc hooks and chops. Tim Wright does this little dance, it's just crazy.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

love em, love em, love em can't wait for the reissue

love the music, the vocals, the stop/start, etc, etc on of my all-time favorites

chris besinger (chris besinger), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

just got it in the mail yesterday. man, what's with the liner notes? the black text is superimposed on top of photos that are really blurry, dark and contrasty, so it's impossible to read. i wish it was designed better.

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Love the band. I know someone was working on this, but I think it would be so soon. Now I can replace my mp3s.

Ds (ikue mori), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

arto's vocals mark? on blonde red head or lying on the sofa? the ep is terrific...the perfect format. 70 mins on cd sounds like torture.

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Got it in the mail today as well! We're all blessed!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate you guys for getting cool cds in the mail without having to pay for them.

(i probably won't buy this; my least fave band on No New York.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

But no new york isn't that great Ian, s'ok as a primer but DNA's 'last live...' is just so much better than the stuff they did for no new york (and a slightly diff line up as i recall).

arto lindsay => the tasmanian devil!

Not everything is about emotion, maybe these people didn't feel anything.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 6 May 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

>Not everything is about emotion, maybe these people didn't feel anything.

Funny you should say that; I was listening to this CD yesterday, and about 2/3 of the way through I got bored with it, and switched to Steely Dan. Similar mood, different execution. Ultimately, much more satisfying.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 6 May 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't wait for this. Is there any video on it? The stuff that's on Downtown '81 is some of my favourite live footage ever.

Jason J, Thursday, 6 May 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 7 May 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone like arto on that first golden palaminos record? i just listened to clean plate and FUCK WOOOOAH. still mangling.

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 7 May 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"(i probably won't buy this; my least fave band on No New York.)"

fucked in head, yes he is.

Downtown81 fuckin rocks also.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 7 May 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

what ever happened to adele bertei? her tune "once in a lifetime" from the vortex soundtrack is a favourite of mine.

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 7 May 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

adele passed away, did she not?

Beta (abeta), Friday, 7 May 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

god they are SO satisfying when the mood hits!! unfortunately the mood hit while i was on the tram to work this morning which precluded "singing" along.

There's a couple cool singing songs on Arto Lindsay Trio album that sounds like DNA: my favorite-'Imbue', 'Absurd Children' , 'Looks Like You', 'Black Flag of Friendship'. And 'Venus' sounds like skronk mixed with drone/shoegaze, no singing but great song.

three years pass...

Saw Ikue Mori last night in two different improvisational contexts -- first with Ken Vandermark (probably the most interesting set, he gave her a lot of space even though I don't think she was loud enough) and the second set was with two improvising drummers. I would have thought I'd enjoy the second set more, but it was a little understated for me, maybe overly polite? still enjoyable and everyone in the crowd was totally there on purpose. Go see her if you can!
