mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 6 March 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes it's the Remarc of "Ricky" nonfame (though "Ricky" is very sweet).

it irritates me sometimes that remarc's drums are not more straightforward; although it is the ultimate in disorientating barrage beats, he too often stays away from the simple funky roll, and fucks up with reversing snares and crazed jazz brutalism.

Bad no bloodclart is heavy and the dub intro works briliantly, suicidal also is wrecking. my favourite is da drumz- very fastand completely rushing and acid bass and its truly heavy.

its good. not as good as the first comp. there's a reason this stuff is being re-released on planet-mu i guess.

Finally arrived in the mail and surprise, surprise it's just about as good as the original collection--made all the better by the fact that I've not heard most of this stuff ever (I'm kinda confused though cuz I'm pretty sure that "In Da Hood" at the very least was released and even made it onto a couple of comps.) The "Fire" remix is at least as good as the Urban Shakedown one and the "Ricky" re-vamp sounds great and the two techstep tracks sound pretty nice. These album length collections of jungle work pretty well (which sort of makes me wonder why more of these collections weren't put together at the time) so here's to hoping that there is enough of a demand to see more of this kind of thing (released by IDM labels who bad-mouthed these guys ten years ago, of course haha.)

god the ricky remix is absolutely terrifying at high volume. it still floors me anyone danced to this. or even listened to it in a public space at high volume.

is it all meant to sound like a vinyl lp with gunk crusted on it, btw?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

my vinyl copy sounds almost as clear as the previous LP.

i just missed out on a bunch of old jump-up so the possibility of having similar LPs for Kemet, Bizzy B, Marvellous Cain, Nut Nut, etc etc would make me sooo happy.

You really get the sense from listening to the "Ricky" remix (I guess it's not unique, but sometimes I do forget) of the problem of making the music too fast. The drums are just relentless, pausing ever so briefly for a moment and then coming back just as strong. It's almost punishing to imagine people trying to keep up with them.

Hahaha I have to assume that the haziness is intentional (Remarc's equivalent of Lee Perry blowing ganja smoke on his mixing board, maybe) cuz the sound is pretty great (all sorts of little details spring out of these tracks on headphones.)

There is a Marvellous Cain LP actually (from 1995.) It was one of the last things Sub Base did before folding.

i found this underwhelming at best. the first half struggles and seriously some of it should have been left unreleased. the last five tracks are solid though and make it worth owning.

two months pass...
finally got this. i think it's killer and had the opposite reaction from twelve - i thinkthe downside is when he gets too dark for his own good. "darkaworld" not too impressive with the production lagging far behind the no u turn crew, "ricky (remix)" comes on too much like luke vibert or something with the screaming samples.

i can't believe dillinja doesn't have enough early 90s shit lying around to do something like this.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)
