What's the motivation behind a semi-popular band doing a split with an unknown band?

I mean, what does the well known band get out of it? Is it always looked at as a 'favor' to an up and coming band they like / are friends with? Why bother?

Well, see, the Jesus Lizard had earned so much money after their 12-month stadium headlining tour that they wanted to give struggling newcomers Nirvana a chance to be heard.

I bought that one! i never really listened to it though. is it better than i remember? i can't even remember the jesus lizard song and i loved all their prior singles.

sonic yoof / erase errata. probably more of wanting to give them exposure. doubt it is a 'favor', like e.e. proposition sy or whatever. seems like a good idea actually. fridge has done a few (with D and fluxus respectively). almost like a "what are you listening to?" answer from the semi-popular band...

Everything doesn't have to be a stratagem to gain popularity. Sometimes the more well known band just knows a lesser known band and wants to work with them. Either that or a label sets it up.

even if it were a strategem, what exactly would be wrong with it?

I've always found split singles one of the most likeable things Indie acts do, especially when it's huge acts giving a exposure (and cash) to small groups. A lot of it still can be a way of gaining exposure for both acts - see the Four Tet/Pole split ep - working in the same way guest appearences work in Hip Hop.

that just sounds like a Suicide Girls movie waiting to happen-'wanna see my split seven-inch?' starring Genesis P Orridge

"I have it in a bottle here."

"Actually Suicide Girl #19, there is a really good 7" in my pants, fish it out for me would you?"

support? camraderie? enthusiasm? it's often a noble act untainted by ulterior motive. why do you insist on being all cynical about it?
