"Lose Yourself" video? I was in the back!"Superman" video? I was in the back!

have always found this song kind of fascinating, out of proportion to its actual musical qualities (which are sort of hamstrung by the dinky "comical" type Mathers beat), and running mainly off the provocative-but-stillborn concept of a black group, headed by a white star, rapping extensively about how this kind of sucks. If it weren't all kind of inoculated by the "just kiddin, folks!" vibe of the backing track and especially the video, we might be looking back on this as a spine-tingling hard-hitter. Not to say I would prefer it with the alternative, the deadening head-nod of a "serious" type Mathers beat, but this is basically the sister song to "White America" even if it doesn't go far enough in addressing how Eminem has benefited, narrative cred-wise, from the visible proximity to this group of black male buddies. (Not to say he was working with them only for the sake of his cred or anything like that - just that, in practical terms, it probably did help, and the Em of "White America" would have been totally aware of (but not excited about) those facts....

the funniest thing was that D12 toured in support of this album w/o Eminem and promotions of shows kind of had to take pains to make clear he wouldn't be there so there wouldn't be tons of disappointed kids or ticket refunds and whatnot. iirc they even performed this song on TV w/o Em and the "fuck Marshall" part became kind of chant between lines throughout the song.

Didn't Bizarre leave D12 and strike out on his own?

― Raymond Cummings, Monday, 27 August 2012 11:02 (thirteen years ago)
it appears there's only 4 people left in D12 now, but it's not like it matters

We need to poll this against "Purple Pills" and Obie's "Got Some Teeth"
― jjjdoom (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 27 August 2012 13:25 (thirteen years ago)
"Purple Pills" would get my vote but mainly just for Proof's "roll away like a rollerblade til my eyes roll back in my skull for days."
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 27 August 2012 13:30 (thirteen years ago)
"Got Some Teeth" best beat, "Purple Pills" best lyrics
