has to be angus mclaise 'universal mutant #3' from a CD that came with wire magazine a year or two ago. was listening to that a few days ago (after chatting to an ILxer abt it): guitar, flute and mclaise's drumming, all droning furiously and then the track finally exploding round five minutes with guitar feedback that wouldn't be out of place on a dead C record.

recorded at woodstock in '69.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 7 March 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

a pat orchard track that was on a ptolemaic terrascope cd

though i would say that roy montgomerys 'liverpool 82' (his best track by a long way) was better, though that was magazine 7" rather than magazine cd

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 7 March 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

back when i was 16 there was one cd i got with the nme that i really liked and listened to a lot. it must have been a 98 end of year one. it had boards of canada, jurassic 5, mercury rev, godspeed, royal trux.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 7 March 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Freek - The Flaws featuring MC Chick-a-Boo from Jockey Slut's Disco Pogo For Punks in Pumps Vol. 3. I'm a sucker for house tracks with a ska feel.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 7 March 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Tricky's Black Steel came with a magazine at a time I was completely oiblivious to his work, and that changed quickly thereafter

mentalist (mentalist), Sunday, 7 March 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott Groves - Mothership Reconnection (Daft Punk remix) off of the last Muzik last year.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 7 March 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

an Ice Cube track with a sample from En Vogue's "My Love"(?) on it, on a Select magazine tape from some point in the late 80s, i think.

Nicolai Dunger "Dr Zhivago's Train"/Kevin Tihista's Red Terror "Sucker"
Uncut mag in "good for something" SHOCK

hehe, I was listening to that this weekend...I preferred the Wreckless Eric, Jim O' Rourke and Bobby Conn tracks from that one

Michael B, Sunday, 7 March 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a Christmas CD with the Dutch VPRO television guide a few years back that had a great cover of ‘Last Christmas’ by Benjamin B. and the very nice Solex song ‘Santa Monica (Kissing A Man With A Beard)’.

Orange, Sunday, 7 March 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a Miss Kitten mix with an issue of Muzik in 2002 that's ace; it was one of my favorites of that year. Recently, I'd have to say an Iraqi traditional piece on a free CD with the last issue of Songlines.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Sunday, 7 March 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I think maybe Space Cowboy's cover of "I Would Die 4 U"
I only have about 5 or 6 magazine cds though

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Sunday, 7 March 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(from the Muzik comp: "Dance Classics" or "Heroes!" or "Rewind" or whatever large type is actually the real title)

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Sunday, 7 March 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably Svefn-G-Englar by Sigur Ros that came with the Melody Maker in early 2000.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Sunday, 7 March 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

damien jurado - 'medicine'

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 7 March 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Paul Di'anno Band "Running Free". OK it's a sucky recording but it was nice to be reminded of such a great great song.

dave q, Sunday, 7 March 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

A Rose Chronicles song on an Alternative Press CD.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 7 March 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Old skool : Piano Version of Suede's "The Living Dead" on cassette (RIP) from Select (RIP) in 1994.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 7 March 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"Without You I'm Nothing" - Placebo, from Q Magazine's Best tracks from the best albums of 1998 issue

whoever (whoever), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Bill Morrissey / Just Before We Lost The War

Part of a collection of New England artists attached to Yankee Magazine a few years back. I bought the magazine for the CD.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

'Spent' by Wire, off The Wire

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

most of the CDs that come with Comes With A Smile magazine have at least one (and often a handful) of really really good tracks..

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Mojo - on three or four separate occasions, for garage, punk, roots of hip hop and reggae. Such great compiles.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

- I second the "Dance To The Underground" mix cd
- The Hives (Hate to say I told you so) on a NME or Q cd a couple years ago
- a Creation tape that came with the NME in 94 or so

daarkbee, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Eugenius - 'Indian Summer' from a Lime Lizard wax cylinder about 175 years ago.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

second that Miss Kittin Musik mix .. others .. NME freebie 7" singles from WAYYYY back .. one had Steinski/Mass Media Motorcade track on it. that one track completely spun my head and changed my listening habits from thereon to this day i still love cut-n-paste .. (Steinski new mix being a top fave)

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

'A Cold Cell' by Coil from one of the Wire Tapper compilations (has an orange cover)
The NME used to give away 7' vinyl EPs in the 80's, and one of them has 'The Motorcade Sped on' by Steinski

Joe Kay (feethurt), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

snap. very special track that Motorcade ..

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

There was an Uncut CD back in 2000 (I think) that had 'I Am The Cosmos' by Chris Bell, 'Blight Takes All' by Trail Of Dead, 'Tell Me Easter's On Friday' by the Associates and 'Buzzin' Fly' by Tim Buckley on it - all new to me at that time. Still listen to that CD all the while - it's great!

Mog, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops, Mark, I hadn't read your first post before typing my own (and it always annoys when other people do that!).

Joe Kay (feethurt), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Into the Feeling" - Bobby Peru. Got it with a copy of Ministry a couple years ago. The mix from "Patricia never leaves the house" into that track is a shining example of what house music can be when approached correctly.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Cannot pick just one track as "best", for already on Ver Vire's cover CD's (to mention but one source) there's been lots of great stuff over the years.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"You're A Dead Man, Baby" by the Kingsbury Manx.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

about a million from the wondrous Volume Magazine.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The Russian Futurists - "Science Of The Seasons"

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Mixmag's 'I Love 1991' CD - Altern 8, Scientist, Speedy J, Beltram, Fortran 5
Kerrang's 'Hives pick their fave tracks' - New Bomb Turks, Radio Birdman, loads and loads of other stuff. Really surprisingly excellent.
Lime Lizard tape w/ Royal Trux, Six Finger Satellite, Truman's Water, Liz Phair etc 1992 etc. I'm going to pick Liz's Fuck And Run as the one track.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Wire Tapper C.D. from 97 or 98- Cornelius - "Mic Check", Arto Lindsay -"Blue eye shadow"

An old Uncut CD which had Michael Head - "Something about you", Gorky's "Faraway eyes" and a few other really good tunes on it as well that I can't recollect at the moment.

Michael B, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a great CD on Vox one time which some nice chap has done an online tracklisting for - http://www.gjrcomputing.com/music/12/disc1202.htm. My favourite track was Dragnet for Jesus, but I still play the CD an awful lot.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a great CD on Vox one time which some nice chap has done an online tracklisting for - http://www.gjrcomputing.com/music/12/disc1202.htm. My favourite track was Dragnet for Jesus, but I still play the CD an awful lot.

Yeah, that's a great C.D.

Michael B, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Unmen - "Also With You" - from Volume.

My first ever hearing of solo Bjork was also via Volume, who published a very slightly different mix of "One Day".

Marianne Faithfull & Ismael Lo - "Without Blame" - Uncut.

Material & William Burroughs - "Words Of Advice For Young People" - Vox.

Pierre Henry - "Psyche Rock" (fatboy slim mix) - GQ, of all places (it was James Brown's first issue as editor).

Junior Boys - "Birthday" - Jockey Slut.

XTC - "Stupidly Happy" - Uncut.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

snap. very special track that Motorcade ..

Funny, this immediately made me think not of Steinski but of My Life Story, whose own splendid "Motorcade" was I believe on one of Melody Maker's mid-90s Romo tapes.

My favourite? Stereolab's "Seeperbold" from a Select Future Tracks tape, around the same time.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

- The Hives (Hate to say I told you so) on a NME or Q cd a couple years ago

that was a Q cd, if it's the one I'm thinking of. Pretty good. I don't know why I have it in for Cooper Temple Clause, who are also on it, but they bug the shit out of me

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fallen" mix by One Dove (from Volume 6, currently rereading this week oddly enough)
"I don't care" by Teenage Fanclub (from Creation tape issued by NME in '96, a year before it came out on "Songs from Northern Britain")
"Ticket to ride" by Husker Du (NME 7inch EP from '86, first taste of the 'Du)
"We have all the time in the world" by MBV (issued on a Vox Island Records CD in '93, so I didn't have to buy the compilation LP it appeared on)

XPost - I didn't know you liked Kingsbury Manx, William B? I thought I was the only one...

Rob M (Rob M), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ticket to ride" by Husker Du (NME 7inch EP from '86, first taste of the 'Du)

I lost that 7" in one of my many moves. That makes me very sad :(

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The last Mojo year-end disc had both "Bonnie and Clyde" by Serge Gainsbourg/Bridgett Bardot (my first time ever actually hearing Gainsbourg) and also the mega-awesome orginal Chic mix of "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross --- the drums/bass work on the intro of that song blew me frickin' mind!!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

My favourite? Stereolab's "Seeperbold" from a Select Future Tracks tape, around the same time.

Oh good choice that man! Great Spiritualized track on same tape also, totally lush near-beatless drone

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I got Boom Bip & Doseone's "Birdcatcher's Lament" and Amon Tobin's "Get Yr Snack On" off the same NME disc. Not to mention Brak's "I Like Hubcaps".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Charlie, I had that tape! I wore it ragged on a holiday in Devon and it finally snapped on the way home, much to my dismay. Didn't it also have 'Speaker 12' by Drugstore on it?

Best song off a free CD is definitely Baxendale, 'Music for Girls', off the Papercuts CD they gave out with issue 3, or 4...I forget. I got it at ATP and it damn nearly changed my life.

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

An Uncut from this past year had a peel sessions version of "Whole Wild World" by Wreckless Eric that was excellent. I am huge into Mojo and Uncut's freebie discs.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the correct answer would have been the Foxgloves off the Papercuts CD. I forgot about that.

Or C'mon Cincinnati by Delakota off a Select late 90s one.

Whilst looking through my CDs, I note that Bentley Rhythm Ace seem to be featured on almost all of them.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The Vox CD mentioned upthread wasnt the first time I'd heard "Surfin Bird" by the Trashmen but it was the first time I'd owned it - it's one of my favourite ever singles.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Too many to mention from Lime Lizard tapes, but here's a POX

Come - Orbit
Velocity Girl - Creepy
Voodoo Queens - Supermodel Superficial
Pram - Watertoy

Best from the CD era POV

Pharohe Monch - Simon Says
Dolly Parton - Jolene
Wiskey Biscuit - Santa Ana Delta Blues
Langley Schools Music Project - Desperado
Hawksley Workman - Jealous of Your Cigarette

Ben Dot (1977), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

no love for cmj¿

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i still have that select tape, somewhere

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

no love for cmj¿

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Maxim magazine had a sampler a while back, with 2 songs from Sponge, Molly and Plowed. Awesome.

Bonnie prince billy - one with the birds
Stereolab - One small step
Mogwai - A cheery wave from stranded youngsters

Jens (brighter), Monday, 15 March 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

there was a really great bbc version of "new paths to helicon" that was on some select mag a buncha years ago.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 15 March 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Shortnin' Bread" by the Ready Men (from MOJO of all placs)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 March 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That was on that "Instant Garage" comp. that also had the amazing "My Daddy Walked in Darkness" by Gil Batemen. I'm telling you, those Mojo "Guide to..." CDs are excellent. The "Roots of Hip Hop" one is an instant party. Same with "Raw Soul." I think this month's is supposed to be Blues.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Monday, 15 March 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ticket to ride" by Husker Du (NME 7inch EP from '86, first taste of the 'Du)

Yes! I think I had already got hold of "New Day Rising" and "Flip Your Wig" but that track was stunning.

Long lost for me too but *cough* Slsk *cough*. I love the Internet.

Honourable mentions:

Ruth Copeland, Gimme shelter (Gimme shelter Vol 2, Uncut, 2001-12)
Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, The dark end of the street (Unconditionally Guaranteed 8, Uncut, 1999-08)

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

from the first and second WIRETapper CDS:

Tarwater - V.At
Cornelius - Mic Check
and special Virgin label one w/ Palmskin Productions, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, FSOL stuff

Select had loads of good stuff on their tapes, off the top of the head, I remember being into:

St. Etienne - Like A Motorway (Chemical Bros. mix - voxfree)
Mick Harvey - Ford Mustang
Boo Radleys - Lazarus (St Etienne mix) (sounded like Sabres of P)

DJ Mag:
Umek - Techno from Slovenia (mix cd)

Muzik:
DFA mix CD
Belive (16B remix)- Gus Gus (maybe this was Select)

UnCut had a New Sounds from the Old West alt.county cd which had some great stuff including:

The Guthries - Season to Leave

...but the best thing I ever got was a tape from C&A which had:

Whistle - Just Buggin'
Mel & Kim' - Showin' Out

Nik (Nik), Monday, 15 March 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The only time that I ever bought a copy of 'Big Issue' was cos it had a free CD! but recall two fine tracks...'This Love' by Liz Frazer/Craig Armstrong and 'Finest Little Space' by Unbelievable Truth.

peter dee (peter dee), Monday, 15 March 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

No doubt about this one... it was...um STILL IS 'Confession' by Pat Orchard that came on a Future Music Cover CD yonks ago... him playing solo acoustic guitar with the Drummer mark Brezzzzzzzekkki..(oh god dont ask me to spell that).. anyway, with him who bashed the drums with Big Country... and was the real drummer on the Cult releases... question for Gareth... what was the Pat Orchard track you are on about? I Love music... and chips (English ones..)

Ian Hound, Monday, 22 March 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Elbow's 'Scattered Black & Whites' on an Uncut CD about three years ago- that made me rush out for the album.

And a rawkin' live in Tokyo version of 'Don't Fight It Feel It' on a Select tape, far too long ago.

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

melody maker did free cassettes for a short period. they were usually between 5 and 8 tracks long. one of them had a pre-In/Flux DJ Shadow demo on it called 'DJ Shadow's Theme' or something. nothing spectacular or anything but it's pretty good and i'm surprised it's not turned up on CD (a.f.a.i.k.) since
