I promise you I had nothing to do with it....

Look out...lots of pop-ups.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 7 March 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

about effing time!

Aaron A., Sunday, 7 March 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, that's quite the effort.
I'd never heard the Cure or BOC comparisons, but the accusations of plagiarism from those tracks seems like a huge stretch to me.
But of course, "Come As You Are" is a direct rip-off of "Eighties", with a bit of Ministry's "So What" thrown in for good measure.
Did Kurt ever talk about "Eighties" in interviews? It's not out of the question, since he did admit to ripping the opening riff to "Teen Spirit" from Boston's "More Than a Feeling".

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 7 March 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I'm not a huge Kurt fan or anything, but this page is bullshit. Kurt's obvious - and always apparent - love for punk rock (and music in general) was one of the most endearing things about him. Dude was a bonafide fucking FAN, nothing wrong with that. So he appropriated, and distilled things that he enjoyed into his own thing. So what? He openly admitted that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was a Pixies rip off. If it weren't for him, no one would be talking about the Vaselines, The Germs, Angry Samoans, Flipper, etc. He, in hip hop parlance, showed love. That's mor ethan can be said for most of the 'popular' artists of today - how many times have you heard the fucking Strokes talk about their favorite bands? I can't recall a single occasion.

If he's guilty of anything, it's of getting rid of those musically competent, hook-obsessed hair metal bands and replacing them with the dreadful humorlessness and jaw-dropping awfulness of bands like Puddle of Mudd.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 7 March 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

While Nirvana has songs that are better, I'm more fascinated by the mind that could create "She Hates Me" than the mind that made "Lithium."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 7 March 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

In the sense that a pool of vomit might have more fascination than a scab, perhaps.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 March 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder what the author of this page would think of the Stones.

anode (anode), Sunday, 7 March 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Roger Adultery OTM.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 7 March 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Roger is OTM, except I have indeed heard the Strokes acknowledge their favorite bands

xpost

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 7 March 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I am convinced "She Hates Me" is the song of my generation.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 7 March 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm voting for "F*ck It (I Don't Want You Back)"!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 7 March 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

How did I know Alex would be the one to start this?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 7 March 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

This page makes no sense. They keep claiming that Nirvana plagiarised, but none of their points prove it at all. For starters, Smells Like Teen Spirit doesnt sound anything like Godzilla. They could have very easily used "More than a feeling" which it ACTUALLY does sound like, and still the point would be moot, as Nirvana openly admitted these things. Besides all that nonsense, a riff along does not a song make.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 8 March 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

And this line made my laugh out loud: "(how can you have any passion what-so-ever if you are contiously "bored and "faking it" as Kurt Cobain freely admitted several times)"

OMG HE SAID HE WAS FAKING IT, GUILTY AS CHARGED! I ALSO FIND PIE GUILTY OF BEING DELICIOUS.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 8 March 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" has about as much in common with "More Than a Feeling" as "Love Will Tear Us Apart" has with "Disco Duck."

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 8 March 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

that is one stupid webpage.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 8 March 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

irreverence = ok. humourlessness = not so good.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 8 March 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

All webpages that say "ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK" = classic

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 8 March 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Aneurysm" sounds a lot like a live version of "Cactus" (Pixies) I saw on TV, but I don't hear it on the recorded version

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 8 March 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I must have missed the memo that said ripping off stuff was ok if you admitted to it.

Steev (Steev), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Steev, you're misinterpreting, that's not at all the reason ripping stuff off is okay

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" has about as much in common with "More Than a Feeling" as "Love Will Tear Us Apart" has with "Disco Duck."
-- Curt1s Stephens (sevenxvii...), March 8th, 2004.

The songs are completely different, and More Than a Feeling totally tramples Smells Like, obviously, but the main riff and drums match almost verbatim, and I think Kurt admitted it even.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, it never occurred to me before but "Smells Like..." does sound like "Godzilla" by Blue Oyster Cult, but the tempo's a bit different.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course, Nirvana is the only band EVER to write songs that sound like other songs. And if you're going to use the word twenty times in one page, you could learn how to spell plagiarism.

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

, in hip hop parlance, showed love. That's mor ethan can be said for most of the 'popular' artists of today

Interesting typo there.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, I was thinking the same thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

this page is stupid, if you combed through every band/artist's instrument riffs/melody and isolate 3 second samples of those, you're bound to find millions of similarities, that's pop/rock music, catchy 3-4 minute songs., but take the entire song, it's way different. the Cure's 'M' sounds nothing like 'About a Girl'. this guy sounds like the dude from beautiful mind, looking for things that ain't there.

whoever (whoever), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea at all how Godzilla and Smells Like Teen Spirit are similar.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The chord progressions for Godzilla and Smells Like Teen Sprit sound almost identical but the rhythm is diferent and I think they're in a different key. The rhythms for More Than a Feeling and Teen Spirit are almost exactly the same but the chord progressions are a little bit different.

Also, the chord progressions for Green Day's When I Come Around and Bush's glycerine are identical, but the rhythms are different. So what?

The argument that band x sucks because band y played riff z 10 years earlier is pointless.

There are a finite number of notes on the fretboard, and these are tried and true chord progressions, easily played by anyone. And to give all the gravy to the Ramones and the Sex Pistols when the Monks predated all punk makes the argument even more pointless, and I'm sure there's a punk band that even predates the Monks. And if you want to just stick with the chord progression, you can go back and back and back until every musician ever is reduced to a sad imitator of the Cro-Magnon who intentionally banged rocks together to create a beat for the first time.

Without a point.

Nirvana is probably one of the most overrated bands ever, sure, but that doesn't mean they were bad.

Shaun (shaun), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Why can't people just never talk about Nirvana ever again? Every last thing I've ever seen written about them by anyone on the internet has disgusted me, including every thread about them on this message board.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I'm sure that now you've brought this to everyone's attention, people will keep your feelings in mind whenever they decide to start a thread/post to a thread/write their thesis/etc.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Good.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

If I had the energy, I would make a hate page for this guy's hate page.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

If I had the time (or I cared) I would write a thesis about what that says about you as a human being.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't being serious. sorry.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"While Nirvana has songs that are better, I'm more fascinated by the mind that could create "She Hates Me" than the mind that made "Lithium." "

Talking about ripp offs, "She hates me" is a rippoff of "I saw your mommy and your mommy's dead" by st. I mean but really, the bass line is the same.

Cacaman Flores, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The opening riff of "She Hates Me" is identical note-for-note to a song by that mock boyband 2Gether, which I believe was called "I'm A Regular Guy."

billstevejim, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Why can't people just never talk about Nirvana ever again?

A grand idea, this. I'm all for it (despite starting this thread)/

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, you know what's really fucking great? "On A Plain"! Damn, I love that song.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

SHUT UUUUUUUUP!!!!!!!!!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i like that one that goes, "one baby to another says I'm happy to meet you".

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Drain You". One of Nirvana's best songs.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Cacaman Flores OTM about "She Hates Me" sounding like Suicidal Tendencies's "I Saw Your Mommy". I thought exactly the same thing when I heard "She Hates Me".

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Why can't people just never talk about Nirvana ever again?
A grand idea, this. I'm all for it (despite starting this thread)

I've found that in most cases, the topic of Nirvana sparks the most inane commentary.. The worst offenders being those on the nirvanaclub.com message board. They're the main reason I think the world should just leave this topic to rest.

And secondly, I can't help but roll my eyes and sigh everytime I have to read another comment about how shitty Nirvana was because Kurt couldn't play a solo as well as Yngwie Malmsteen.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

... let alone the "Come As You Are" vs "Eighties" comparisons.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well said. Now let's move on to the next topic: Were the Beach Boys proto-crunk?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Or maybe, Bread: Grime Before Their Time?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

If someone would just invent some more chords, we could postpone these debates until those permutations have been exhausted. I propose an H chord or maybe a K flat.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah typical rockist with your fucking LETTERED chords! How about a NUMBER for once?

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

7 sharp or maybe a % flat minor

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

At least the Moody Blues' search will finally be over

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Well fuck all this Nirvana hate. I just played Nevermind and wound up shouting along with it and leaping around my house. I don't do that with those other fucking songs. The Pixies maybe, sometimes. Who cares if something's derivative if it just renders its template irrelevant by stomping all over it?

plebian plebs (plebian), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I should pobably start seperate a thread with this but I am going for it here. Jesus H. Christ, what is up with the Nirvana hate around here? And does anyone hate Nirvana except Alex? Alex, it is cool with me if you dislike Nirvana but, fuckin' A, man, deal with it! The world does not live by your playlist! I actually find The Killing Joke to be trite, dated, and pretentious,(MAKEUP!!???) but you dig them so, HONOUR THE FIRE, and all that. But, fuck it, I am going solo on this if I have to. NIRVANA WAS A GREAT FUCKING BAND! I love this band. period. Want to argue about it? Well, bring it on. Stooges, Ramones, Nirvana = Godhead!
And before anyone plays the Pixies card... Never, once, did the Pixies ever write a single line of lyrics that ever had anything to do with me or my life. Fuck "Black Francis". What a git. This monkeys going to vomit. I never heard such lame ass trash. Sure Kurt loved it, but Lennon loved Phil Spector too. Let go then, gloves off.

Speedy (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

PROBABLY (It feels so foolish to post bad spelling!)

Speedy (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

we all ove nirvana. without nirvana there would be no foo fighters.

gaol clichy (clichy), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I like the Pixies and Spector plenty when they're good, which is a goodly amount of the time. Lennon was a genius, although he was bad for lots of the seventies. Kurt, the bastard, prevented us from ever really knowing how great he was. Both Lennon and Kurt were great singers, although only Lennon anchored the greatest pop band in history (except the Motown House band).

plebian plebs (plebian), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Were the Beach Boys proto-crunk?

BAHahahahahahahaha

Alex, it is cool with me if you dislike Nirvana but, fuckin' A, man, deal with it!

Christ, Speedy, keep your pants on. It's not my fuckin' site. I just found it and thought it was worth a look and a laugh. Don't get your BVDs in a knot.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Speedy is otm. I still love listening to Nirvana while The Pixies (who I once loved but now leave me completely cold, it's weird they are like the only band I feel slightly guilty for not liking anymore, I mean its THE PIXIES EVERYONE LOVES THE PIXIES RIGHT?) do nothing for me now. Whatever about Nirvana being derivative blah blah fucking blah for me it's all about Kurt's voice. I think he has probably the greatest rock voice ever imho. And as for lyrics, "Dumb" to thread.

Michael B, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Honestly speaking, I have less against Nirvana than I do against the nation of fawning graveside groupies that sprang up in Kurt's wake. Hell, I have Nevermind, Hormoaning and one of their live discs. They were a fine band for what they were, but I don't think even they were trying to convince anyone that they were the end-all/be-all of bands (let alone the most original). Whomever said it up thread was correct: Kurt was first and foremost a superfan (as is Dave, though Dave is a bit more forthcoming about it). I don't think Kurt asked for not particularly relished his role as "spokesman for a generation". Having greatness thrust upon him was something that obviously didn't sit well with the man. But his method of eschewing that impression (i.e. suicide) only CEMENTED it (i.e. once you're dead, people can project anything they like on your legacy. Who's going to refute it? Courtney Love? I don't think so!).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Good point. He should have just disappeared like Axl did.

The graveside groupies bother me as well. I'd certainly feel less strange calling them my alltime fav had they always stayed a college band. But either way, that's just how I feel. Greatest band ever.

billstevejim, Friday, 19 March 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
I always thought that "She Hates Me" sounded like "Summer Loving" from Grease.

JP (Evil P), Saturday, 30 September 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa, me too!

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Saturday, 30 September 2006 23:04 (nineteen years ago)

I always thought the worst part of "She Hates Me" was when yells "TRUST"

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Saturday, 30 September 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'm really struggling to hear the similarity with "Godzilla."

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 1 October 2006 00:24 (nineteen years ago)

(which is so not a great BOC song anyway)

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 1 October 2006 00:24 (nineteen years ago)
