WHAT the FUCK!?!?!

"Lyrically, it's just all too ridiulous"?? Even the immortal rhyme, "Caroline (Caroline!) She's the reason for the world bitch (bitch!) I hope she's speedingonthewaytotheclubtryingtohurryuptogettosomeballerorsingerorsomebodylikethatandtrytoputonhermakeupinthemirror and crash, craaaash, craaaaaaash into a ditch!"?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

And it's "boo-boo", NOT "poo-poo."

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

HOW DARE PEOPLE NOT LIKE OUTKAST

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

He's totally right on this one, you know.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I couldn't believe what i was reading. This man actually thinks the song will fail because of the hook! It's catchy and that's all that counts in the charts, it will make money. Not to mention it's a fantastic song.

D Aziz (esquire1983), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I was more interested in the review of the new Murs single.

subgenius (subgenius), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the only thing he's wrong about is that the production is "fantastic". the whole thing is fucking awful, i'm really hoping it doesn't become too inescapable and that they rush onto the next single quickly.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

pitchfork has committed a crime on par with rwanda and angola.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(what's "roses"?)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i see.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

haha finally BROTHERS IN ARMS

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes i feel like speakerboxxx/the love below's richard goldstein

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, just don't go writing The Poetry of Rock or The Attack Queers behind my back, OK?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

ARGH

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is very nearly great ("thank/stank"), yet because it just misses ("poo poo"/"boo boo" -- who cares?), it stanks very much. The review is pretty much right on.

"Bow Tie" should have been the next single. Just a matter of time, I guess.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a perverse side of me that wishes they'd release the "drum & bass" version of "my favorite things" as the next single

then there's the side of me that just wishes outkast would stop sucking

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

the perverse side is the left-hand side

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"the sinister side"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

pass the dutchie

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Every Rose Smells Like Poo-Poo: Outkast the new Poison?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Just like every Indian sings a sad, sad song

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I have conflicted sides like Jess except half of me wants to shoot Andre 3000 for dressing like a fucking asshole and the other half wants to shoot Big Boi for thinking he's tough.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the backlash begins?!

jonviachicago, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

pretty weird take on the song if you ask me, that review

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

haha "begins"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

check the archives baby i AM the backlash

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't Big Boi like 5'3"? I'm always surprised the way Andre 3000 towers above him. Big Boi:Big::Curly Neal:Has Hair ?

subgenius (subgenius), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't Big Boi like 5'3"? I'm always surprised the way Andre 3000 towers above him. Big Boi:Big::Curly Neal:Has Hair ?

You realize the reason he got that name was an intentional play on his height?

djdee2005, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa, you irrationally hated Outkast before anyone else was dumb enough to, congrats Strongo!

Guy, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

well, they are kind of rubbish

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

As a token ILM Speakerboxxx/TLB apologist, even I wouldn't have picked "Roses" as a single.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"Roses" is one of my favorites from the album, easy. I'm glad that it's a single.

I'm not sure why anyone would be shocked by Ryan Schreiber at this point. We all know his MO, we all know he's a bit of a turbodouche. And I don't say this because we're disagreeing about the song - Jess doesn't like the Outkast album and it doesn't strike me as reactionary or dim at all, whereas Schreiber is the ultimate indie-guy anti-fun strawman.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The most off-the-mark line in this is more of this nonsense that TLB is "forward-thinking". It's the complete opposite of that!

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

My defense of "Roses" as single:

*it's one of the few tracks on the album that have both Andre & Big Boi
*the whole "stupid ass bitch/punk ass bitch thing at the end
*catchy as fuck
*fuck you guys I love this song

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, I forgot...lyrical ridiculosity shitty-songs do not make (see also: almost the entire P-Funk catalog)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, wtf, if you're gonna criticize a song for the lyrics, at least get the fucking lyrics right! Jesus.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

DON'T YOU EVER YEARN FOR CHANGE?!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I however see a problem with this as a single considering the importance of the word "SHIT" in the chorus. A bleep will do this song no justice.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so glad this song is a single. It has always been one of my favorites from the album.

If the label lets them do a couple more (the only reason they did 'Roses' was because the label wouldn't pay for two more videos to do 'Prototype' and 'Church'), I would hope to see "She Lives In My Lap" and "Ghettomusick" get the pushes they were supposed to get initially.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah those 2 original single choices would be preferable. or "Bowtie".

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

it does make sense for them to only put out one single from the album right now, though, since that song w/ Sleepy Brown is out now too.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck "roses", where's "prototype"?!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Waiting in the wings for senior prom season methinks.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think "The Rooster" should be a single, because it's by far my favorite song on both of the discs, and it has one of my favorite choruses ever.

The most off-the-mark line in this is more of this nonsense that TLB is "forward-thinking". It's the complete opposite of that!

You've got to look at it from the perspective of a Pitchfork writer/reader - if you've been listening to guitar music your whole life, and your entire idea of music that was ahead of the curve was post-rock or noise-rock or (something)-rock, then keyboard heavy non-rock does seem foward-thinking, especially if it's mixing with music that still has some roots in what you recognize as rock (in the case of "Hey Ya," that would be guitars, in the case of "Roses" and most of The Love Below, that would be a heavy Prince influence.)

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Rooster" is pretty amazing.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

they covered alice in chains?!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The shame of the whole Outkast hype/controversy/whatever to me is that it is overshadowing the fact that Big Boi actually released a really, really, great creative rap album last year....Speakerboxx is amazing...I've long stopped even really listening to Andre's side.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Totally M@tt.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The music from Speakerboxxx, if Big Boi eventually gets to tour on it, is gonna KILL live. Sometimes I wonder if he had the sho nuff-ness of the rockin' live show in mind during production.

And to think that it almost didn't get made at all.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You've got to look at it from the perspective of a Pitchfork writer/reader

I am a Pitchfork writer!

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, I should have put a little wink at the end of that - I didn't except you to know that, Matthew!

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Roses" is great. Stop the hate. I pray that Schrieber is celibate.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Does the guy only write negative reviews of pop albums and singles because he's chickenshit to give his opinion on bands that might have more cred than him or something? I'm sick if this guy socking it to every mainstream non-event.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Pfork's treatment of Lil Jon is sinful.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is the reason I started to not care so much about this record. But I love Nick.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I love that song, "Roses", it's the bomb! But, what exactly does it mean when they say, "Roses Really smell like Boo Boo!"? On top of this, where can I download the clean version of this song?

Annabelle Morison, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)
