Curious as to whether or not people here would dig this.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The funny is conspicuously absent.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Why has Stylus gone all cute, smart and snappy? It's annoying.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I really don't care for these people.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

nintendo commentary OTM, though.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get the cute, smart and snappy comment. Even if it applies to this (arguable, I guess), where else?

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

LOL BOB SAGET OLIVE FORK LOL OMG

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Next time don't use your names, just quotation marks or initials. Your shit has got to be unbelievably tight before you should start using your names over and over beside respective texts in that format, otherwise it comes off a little Dave Eggers.

LC, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

There are over 20 people writing for this thing. There's no way could people keep initials straight, and I think it's important that the writers develop individual personalities.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

ever notice how no one from pitchfork posts links to pitchfork(I could be wrong) but it's always stylus writers that link to stylus pieces. they should be more like splendid, splendid's writing isn't always gold but man they post like clockwork and they don't try to be funny.

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus you people are dour.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed we are Bill. Indeed we are.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh all over this.

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i am confused to the point of this

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Stylus is proving that we are humorless by proving that they are not funny.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, i do this sort of thing with my friends all the time when we're drunk and watching VH1 at 2 am or whatever and yeah its a little embarassing but c'mon don't pretend you are never bitten by the nostalgia bug HOWEVER i dont see the point in a. doing it in public or b. trying to pass it off as content for a publication

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

or C. doing it exclusively with internet music critics.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

dr. bill, don't try to bring hip onion content here...it's over their heads.

jp, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

a. doing it in public or b. trying to pass it off as content for a publication C. doing it exclusively with internet music critics.

a. In what way is this different from what VH1 is doing, in concept, anyway? Because Stylus is a serious web magazine and shouldn't be doing silly things like this? What about Swygart's UK Top 20s, or any of the Pop Playground columns, really?

b. If you don't like it, you don't like it, but it is content.

c. The web equivalent of the b-list celeberity. What would you rather it be?

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i didnt say i liked it when VH1 did it either! but i'm not drunk now, no one else is reading over my shoulder with me, and even if they were, the computer isnt a very good device for communal enjoyment. watching one of those vh1 specials alone i would assume is a very sad activity also.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

look dude i'm not trying to shit all over yr parade here but you cant start a thread soliciting reactions and then get all pissy when people dont dig yr scene, okay?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

c. The web equivalent of the b-list celeberity. What would you rather it be?

But no matter how far down the chain (or really offensively awful in the case of Donal Logue or the guy from Queer as Folk) the panelists on Vh1 are, it's still a pretty wide range of people (and tons of people who were involved with the subject matters), this just ends up pretty same-y.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

watching one of those vh1 specials alone i would assume is a very sad activity also.

Listen, it's Monday.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

FYI, not all of those people are internet critics, a couple of them are just...people.

And I thought it was clever. Except for the clod who said "Fuck Nation [of Millions]

djdee2005, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not getting pissy. I'm just defending myself. You said "I don't see the point in ____," I'm trying to explain what the point was.

I was curious how ILM would react, now I know.

And yes, Colin, it's true that there's way more variety on the VH1 show. That's one of the biggest flaws in the article. But if I really wanted variety in the article, I'd have no idea who to ask to participate.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

There's not enough of what I said in there, obviously.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Gosh I was semi-concious during the 90s and I have no idea what half of you lot are talking about! Well Bill it's not really much of an article is it, it's just a bunch of loosely associated and hard to read content-less comments! I mean, who would like that!

Er... so when's the next Focus Group up Tom?

Oh I forgot to do my ballot. Bugger.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man and the deadline was yesterday! SuXoR.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

See the thread - if I get it by tomorrow evening it's ok, cos I have a job interview tomorrow so I won't be doing anything with it except excel data entry.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

its too similar to the tv programme, it makes everyone sound like stuart maconie ("werent it great when we had them big trousers, what were we thinking?").

i dont really like these dewy-eyed reflections on "our shared youth" signifiers though, so i am biased

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott McKeating: "Highlights include U2’s take “Night and Day” to task and reinvent it as the tensed up longings of an broken obsessive."

That speaks for its own idiocy, but you can also use Gavin Mueller's tidy summary of the whole piece: "No saving capabilities."

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, Chris, did we not ask you to contribute?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

So who's Stylus's Michael Ian Black, then? Or its Hal Sparks?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Gavin is probably the best.

Being Hal Sparks isn't really something to shoot for. He's real hit or miss.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

You see? We're not even as good to complain about as Pitchfork.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, TGDB, I disagree. I heartily disagree...
