I'm not familiar enough with the "genre" to put together a stellar mix for a friend who's stuck on Firehose and needs to branch out...can anyone recommend some stuff? He has a long and tedious commute each day and needs a little pick-me-up for the freeway.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers?

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess that's a snub. Oh well.

MEAT PUPPETS!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Any particular songs/albums to recommend? He also listens to Husker Du...guess he's into those big punker/softies, eh.

REM

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

REM - great...that narrows it down a lot! i only like old REM, anyway. But thanks.

ap, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I imagine it's not worth mentioning the Minutemen is it? Try "Meat Puppets 2" or "Up On The Sun" for the classic Meats sound.

Watt is a pretty unique musician and it definitely gives his bands their own sound. This makes it a hard question to answer as there just are not that many bands that are led by a stellar bassist.

fIREHOSE sound is pretty wide, they could get folky, funky, jazzy and punky in the same tune.

There are a bunch of older indie/punk bands I think that someone would like if they did fIREHOSE, but most of them are bands I would think that someone who is into Watt would perhaps already know about.

Fugazi
The Jesus Lizard
The Birthday Party
Wire
Bazooka
Shellac
Gang of Four
The Contortions
Yo La Tengo (for the folkier Ed side)

I haven't a clue on newer bands for a fIREHOSE fan.

Really? That makes me feel sad for the modern-day Dickies-wearing, hard-drinking poet with heart o gold. There must be something out there...!

ap, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, um...Guided By Voices are still around!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

There were a few other bands on SST who did the funk-punk-jazz kinda thing :

Tar Babies (drummer was Dan Bitney, later of Tortoise)
Alter Natives
Treacherous Jaywalkers (Josh Haden of Spain's early band)

Most of these bands weren't that great though, and their records tend to be OOP too so I'm not sure why I bothered mentioning them. ANYWAY, one more recommendation : Mission Of Burma.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm...everything else current I can think of is either too poppy or too weird or too rootsy or just plain awful. Colin Meeder to thread, maybe?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

That in itself is interesting. fIREHOSE is a relic of a lost era that has yet to rear its head again.

ap, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, we'll find something yet, I'm sure.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Rip, Rig, and Panic (haven't heard much by them but it funky/punky),
The Pop Group,
James Chance/James White & the Blacks, etc. (didn't like these guys as much)

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

you guys are mentioning all these indie ass bands and post punk disco bands, wtf. let your friend listen to firehose ! theres enough genre hoppin on those records that can last him a while.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and Blue Oyster Cult.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, now Chaki speaks major truth. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Well then how about Thin Lizzy?

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend says he's ready tomove beyond firehose, but maybe I shouldn't let him. It could get dangerous.

ap, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Slovenly
Scrawl
My Dad is Dead
New Rob Robbies

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Descendants

Jeremy (Jeremy), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Victim's Family was a good one.

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dianogah?

echoinggrove, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell your friend that Watt loves John Coltrane, and then lay some 60s revolution jazz/fire music on him.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Of the same era, the closest couple of bands I can think of are Death By Milkfloat (from Hull, UK) and Agitpop (from Minneapolis). Both nice enough, but neither of 'em were particularly great.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

What your friend really needs though are the Dog Faced Hermans.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

more kids should listen to just firehose for a week.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)
