S/D comedown music

After a long long night of err... taking it to the excess let's say, I was cycling home listening to Depeche Mode's "Violator". I think this could possibly be at once the best and worst comedown album of all time.

Anyway, this is beside the point. What is the best possible music to listen to when the night's magic is lifted and you're greeted with the gurning zombie faces that were once your friends'?

if you've been out caning loads of pills then come home stick on some dub and have a few bongs.

Spacemen 3 "Call the Doctor" on infinite loop. No need to thank me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The Velvet Underground's 3rd album
Blonde on Blonde
Diamond Dogs

I can't really explain these choices. Just trust me.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Sade
Eno
Spacemen 3 Recurring
King Tubby
Miles Davis

Actually, Spaceman 3 is a great choice. Spiritualized, lesser so.
I'm beyond my days of chemical comedowns, but my old favorites were:

Search:

Miles Davis: In a Silent Way
Terry Lee Brown Jr: Terry's Cafe 1-3
Primal Scream: Screamedelica (sp?)
Timewriter: Deep Train
Shuggie Otis: Inspiration Information
Black Science Orchestra" Walter's Room
Sparklehorse last album (OK, my memory for titles is shot, too many comedown mornings)
Stevie Wonder: Music of my mind

Destroy:

Bob Marley albums
The Orb
Massive Attack ('cept maybe Blue Lines, but does better as a warmup)
Aphex Twin
Doves (half-baked early 90s indie, anyone?)
Groove Armada

"K/Half Noise"-Mum
"Belfast"-Orbital
"Country Rain"-Slowdive
"Why I'm So Unhappy"-dNTEL

good call with "Confusion the Waitress" as well.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Any Philly Soul, but especially The Impressions.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

some personal favorites back in the day:

Tortoise - Djed
Believe it or not but that second Timeless cd is really great as come-down music (all those "It's my life-ife-laiiifffe" samples and fallen angel images suddenly make a lot of sense)

also: Lazer Guided Melodies, Selected Ambient Works 85-92 and indeed In A Silent Way

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Global Communications-14.31

Derrick May-Beyond the Dance (Cult Mix)

Frankie Knuckles-Your Love

Metro Area-Metro Area

and also Michael Mayer-Fabric 13 or Tobias Thomas-Smallville, haha that's not a diss I just think it fits the bill.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

tom waits - heart of saturday night

and dylan's middle years - blonde or nashville, even blood on the tracks, although that's more of an emotional comedown...

AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

U2's The Unforgettable Fire starting at "Wire" (i.e. skipping the first track and "Pride (In the Name of Love)").

Songs: Ohia's Ghost Tropic

The vocal-only track of "Because" by The Beatles that appears on Anthology 3. The harmonies are completely mesmerizing.

Portishead In NYC (PNYC).

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Search:
Ulrich Schnauss - Far Away Trains Passing By
Ultramarine - Every Man & Woman Is A Star
Bach piano or violin sonatas

Destroy:
Ministry of Buddha Chill Lounge Hotel volume 6 (order that cab. now.)
Wagon Christ - Throbbing Pouch (wonderful in other circumstances, but I can still remember the social discomfort this caused)
Any Massive Attack whatsoever (woooo, paranoia!)
"Intelligent" drum & bass (ooh, I'm relaxed! ooooh, no I'm not, I'm all jumpy again! relaxed! jumpy! jumpy! relaxed! who am i? what am i?)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I find The Herbaliser's Very Mercenary album to be a perfect post-excess tonic.
