chain smoking is the first single from the forthcoming "midrange" LP, out on ghostly soon i guess. anyone familiar with the older dykehouse stuff on planet-mu/etc? search and destroy.

The previous album on Planet Mu, Dynamic Obsolescence, is completely different from "Chain Smoking". No vocals, no guitar, just short pieces of lo-fi electronics in sort of an old Detroit or Warp style. Clever stuff.

midrange came out this week and it's AWESOME! has anyone else heard this yet? it's like an electronic space rock epic, really!

revive? (no one ever jumps on my "revive" bandwagon, whine snivel)

just got chain smoking off of gabba. music is like jamc + nocal pop punk (green day and screeching weasel, and yesiknowscreechingweaselisn'tfromcali, but if you know that much, then you probably also know exactly why I said that they were "nocal pop punk". gimmeafukkiinbreak). wow. this is exactly what I need right now. is the rest of the album this good?

Chain Smoking is totally the worst song on the record.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 July 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

johnny OTM. cringe inducing lyrics on that one.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 24 July 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. Well, as a general rule I usually don't even notice lyrics unless they're fantastically good or unspeakably awful, and these registered as the latter for me (too) on first listen. But the more I listen, the more I like. Not sure I'm willing to argue this point, esp. given that I can't even remember specifics off the top of my head, but last time I heard this song I was convinced that not only were the lyrics not bad, but that they were actually *clever* in a sort of playing on/making fun of pop punk tropes kind of way. "You're kind of soft, and I'm so hard" etc. Takes the trite-wordplay-masquerading-as-emotional-depth of mall punk and exposes it as what it is - a rather transparant and pathetic attempt at seduction. Or maybe I'm giving them/him too much credit?

But what you're saying is that the other songs are even better...?

Matt L.C. (flightsatdusk), Saturday, 24 July 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. Much, much better.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 July 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yes.

REVIVE

I can't find anything about why it was recorded or if it was released on some compilation, but there's a cover of "Streets of Your Town" up on Dykehouse's Myspace right now.

midrange is such a great album-- wtf happened to this dude?

⚓ (gr8080), Monday, 5 March 2012 21:21 (fourteen years ago)

I think he just kinda stopped. I sent him a message through myspace (lol) a few years ago to see if he could help me out with a version of "One More Day" w/o the fade-in and he said he would, but his masters for Midrange were decomposing in a landfill somewhere.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 5 March 2012 21:47 (fourteen years ago)

i wonder if he ris he doing anything else now?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 5 March 2012 22:09 (fourteen years ago)

some good stuff but so far none of it has the epic shoegazey feel of midrange :-\
