Lord Willing!?!?!?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The rest of those albums sound about right (although I've not heard the Koze and I should reserve judgement until I have.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i have never heard the jessamine, and yeah the liars and koze are pretty mediocre (esp in the context of broke-making purchases), but clipse is madness!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

it's interesting, i don't want to start another clipsey/neptunes debate (so early 00s), but I have all 3 Kelises, a lot of Neptunes stuff on other albums, but I just found their MCing so unimaginative, so harnd-man-with-no-charisma ish, i couldn't pay attention to the beats. it just hurt me to hear hip hop so calculated, so cold. and in a different "cold" way to, say, Mobb Deep.
You know when a recording makes you dislike the music industry? THat's what "lord willin'" did for me.

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It was a Thirteen Moons album, about 16 years ago - I made the mistake of deciding I'd like it on the strength of a review. Also, that first Simian album, for the same reason. I now always listen to clips first.

Jez (Jez), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, when I started collecting heavy metal officially, around 1984 - age 13, I spend my hard earned kiddies money on Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force album. I never heard of the guy, but the electric guitar held in the fiery flames promised nothing but good. At home it proved to be more of a classical music album (imho) than thrash, with acoustic pieces and church organ phrases. And being mainly instrumental.

How I cried. How I cried.

Roger in Mokum (Roger T), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

What does Clipse have to do with the record industry?
Those guys were shit on by the "music industry." It took the Neptunes to give them light, not CEOs.
I love that record.
Clipse are pretty damn solid MCs.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't the first simian the good one?

duke japon, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

NagNagNag compilation

I was going to buy it, asked the guy in the shop for it, saw the price, more than I was willing to spend, the guy starts a conversation, we had a nice talk for about 10 minutes, I tell him, well, you're a nice guy, I'll get the cd then. And when I listened to it in the car, I skipped more than half of the songs... way too dark wave for me.

Maybe I should give it a second listen.

daarkbee, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

That bloody awful Colder album from last year. Serves me right for buying something just because it was Jockey Slut's album of the month.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

mike t-diva OTM.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Have a wander round CD2 of the Nag Nag Nag comp, you'll do a lot better out of that one.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely - mike t-diva so on the money. That album really hurts.

___ (___), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Almost half of the "experimental / noise / improv" cds I've ever bought

Roger, whutchoo talkin' bout? Rising Force rulz!! That one with "Black Star" on it and the one about flying...well, anyway, search the instrumnetal Yngwie stuff, not the crap with Joe Lynn Turner and the other bullshit 'frontmen'

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Stereolab - Dots and Loops

I didn't even have money to spend on it, so I cashed out some CDs for it (Primus - Tales from the Punchbowl and I think another that I can't remember now). Got it home and was sorely disappointed, but it slowly grew on me over the years and now I consider my favorite album ever.

boldbury, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't feel even remotely guilty about buying it; but really, honestly, how does anyone derive pleasure from listening to the Electric Six album?

Quite the the most unholy crock of shit I've wasted my hard-earned on in a long, long time!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

how does anyone derive pleasure from listening to the Electric Six album?

"if you have to ask..."

Anyways, back in '98 I was incredibly dumb and thought "you know what would be a good idea? Deciding not to wait an extra two months and buying the IMPORT of Psyence Fiction for $35."

I liked it. Unfortunately, it was an $8 kind of like.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

haha replace "unkle" with "nerd" and nate is me

I totally agree... now. But when one pubescent self hopes for pure fuckin' mayhem, mister Malmsteen isn't thee Deliverer. :-)

are you saying that you don't wanna be the Dance Commander? 'Cause I'll take over Dance Commander duties for your wussy not-Electric Six-liking ass :)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"are you saying that you don't wanna be the Dance Commander? 'Cause I'll take over Dance Commander duties for your wussy not-Electric Six-liking ass"

Please, be my guest.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Stewart is obviously not ready to sin

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not for everybody. Neither is Electric 6!
I may be the only person who admits to liking this album when sober

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yay = original "danger! high voltage!" 7" recording
boo = ultra-compressed bacteria choking nu-metal production values

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

strongo, have you heard the not-ultra-compressed Wildbunch stuff?

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

just "danger"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

also (and may god strike me dead for saying so) but jack white added a nice bit of contrast to that, vocally, which i found lacking in the rest of it.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

dont get me wrong, i like the white stripes okay really...i just wouldnt imagine reaching for jack white's voice when i was listing "pleasurable sensations"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

though "gay bar" r00lz ok

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

you can't ignore their techno!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

*dies*

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"I may be the only person who admits to liking this album when sober"

I would never have believed I'd ever find myself saying these words in this order, however: I never want to be that drunk.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just spent twenty six pounds on a Karelia album. I haven't even listened to it yet but already I feel fucking dreadful.

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

If I ever spend more than about £10 on a CD I feel like I've been cheated. I took the Colder album back and got the SFA instead, and felt the same about that. £30 on Zaireeka? Stupid. £20 on Heart Of The Congos? Much less stupid. £5 on Illmatic? Bonza!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

illmatic has become one of the great bargains of our time

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The "rock" version of In Search Of... was $10. Wasn't Deliverance super-marked-down at Best Buy, too?

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Stand! on vinyl for £7? Bonza!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

If I do finally succumb to the growing temptation I've been feeling for me to blow US$550 on one of these, then I may possibly start to feel some twinges of guilt.

But not before.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Stewart, what the hey is that boxset?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, that link didn't work very well, did it?

Try this one instead.

(And if that doesn't work then I'll stop showing of and trying to be clever and just tell you like any normal person might)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

< assumes insufferably smug and pompously self-satisfied expresion that everyone immediately wants to punch >

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just spent twenty six pounds on a Karelia album.

Oh my god... IT BEGINS

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

It's probably a conservative estimate to suggest you could have picked it up for 50p six months ago

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything I've ever bought.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Dead C: Harsh 70s Reality Double LP

$30.
I was piss-poor...whatever, it is awesome.
