And a sucker MC shall lead them: bad rappers

So who's the absolute worst rapper out there?

I keep going back to this godawful cut "Bug Powder Dust" by Bomb the Bass. Don't know the name of the responsible party handling the MC duties, but goddammit that was some foul shit.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Magoo catches a lot of shit, but I've ALWAYS disliked Ma$e.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't recall the name of that Bomb the Bass MC either, but he wasn't half bad, especially on that other Bomb the Bass track he was on.

My vote goes for DJ Bobo.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy on the BTB track is Justin Warfield and I also don't like his voice but the "shocking your ass like a faulty vibrator line" is nice. Magoo is fine. I was glad to see Cappadonna fail.

Le Coq, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If P-Diddy counts then he automatically wins. I never minded M@se and liked Magoo (for wha he was).

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

justin warfield rapped on a placebo track as well, rather pointlessly i might add

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not much into rap but my vote goes to eminem

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh this is so easy - Tony M of course!

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Which one of the New Kids on the Block was the one who rapped?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Naomi, who recorded "Sweet Naomi Rap" for P & P Records around 1980. The most literally unlistenable thing I have ever heard, non-experimental bullshit division.

If you're talking about rappers people might actually know, someone from Anticon, probably.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(spot the irony in that last sentence, plz)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

How Dr Dre has not been mentioned yet I have no idea.

As for Bomb the Bass, when I hear that song I am forever 14, which in the context turns out to be a good thing. I can't understand how you can't like it

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

dissing Justin Warfield ! damn you guys are harsh. i love his style. his 1st 'solo' lp is a masterpiece with prince paul all over it at the height of daisy age production, avoid the guys second lp as J decided to discover Rock music .. but his third album as One Inch Punch was stunning mix of sonic youth guitars and rap .. a superb album.
now back to the Q .. the worst ever rapper ?
MC Tunes ? Mr C ?

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Whichever one it was in 5ive.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I was listening to a metal comp yesterday and a song by Candiria came on and i actually became embarrassed for the band while listening. I couldn't even listen to the whole song cuz i was cringing so much. It's very rare, but every once in a while i will hear something that actually makes me feel bad for a band cuz it's sooooo corny.
Anyway, for those who don't know, Candiria are one of those daring and innovative bands that combine flea's bass playing, nu-metal, and really bad rapping to make something scary.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Anfield Rap" v "Pills"

winterland, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Magoo is just the modern day equivalent of those dudes that Mantronik used to have rap on his records. Production geniuses don't want a really great rapper to get in the way of their rad sounds.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

On their own records anyway. Gwen Guthrie and Missy being exceptions.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I usually don't end up remembering much about the guest spots on timbaland records either. I just remember the sounds.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete Voss

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Magoo is not that bad. I find him entertaining. And his voice makes him sound like a cross between Snoop and Q-Tip.

I don't like Jermaine Dupri. And Crunchy Black gets under my skin.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, i never had a problem with Magoo. He fits the music. Timbaland uses rappers like instruments.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

With my respect for the dead firmly in place, I'll have to go with my man Dee Dee here. "German Kid" wins the fucking prize.

Also all nu-metal 'mcs' (tho I always thought that, wack as he is, Durst sorta held his own on that Method Man track)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

That woman rapper from Modern romance's "Queen of the Rapping Scene"!!!! If you haven't heard this early 80s bandwagon jumper, try to imagine Marlene Deitrich trying to a do novelty rap with lines like "Eh'm the Qveen!!!! Eh'm the Qveen!!!! Eh'm the Qveen of the repping seene!!!!" and you might have an idea of how bad this was even for the time!!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Naomi, who recorded "Sweet Naomi Rap" for P & P Records around 1980. The most literally unlistenable thing I have ever heard, non-experimental bullshit division.

Now I want to hear this!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i stopped listening to that petrol emotion when i bought their Big Decision 12 inch. it made me shiver.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

but there is no end to bad rock-rapping. best to stick to bad rap rappers. puff daddy is a pretty good candidate.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Fabolous. Can't stand his mushmouthed mumbling.

Surprised no one's posted the pic of "Rappin' Rodney," though.

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

and their is no end to corny raps that aren't that great and yet somehow work within the context of the song. name a rapper that you think is bad and that others think is good. well, puff daddy obviously has his fans. someone said mase. I know some people hate Tupac.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

So has anyone actually heard the Vin Diesel/Arthur Russell colab? ;)

original bgm, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

oh Jesus I know he's not a bad rapper but the worst rap I've ever heard, come to think of it, is KRS-One's contribution to "Radio Song" by R.E.M.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Common is a terrible MC.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Common is more or less just spotty. Sometimes he's really on, and other times he's painfully not. Other more likeable rappers have just as many lame-ass moments, but they usually manage to pull it off better for not totally lacking charisma as dude does.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, bad rapper discussion. Why the fuck ain't nobody said PAUL BARMAN yet? Good fucking lord.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"whatcha gotta do in this day and age/Agitate, educate, organise"
come ON! that's my jam!

everybody stop covering for P Diddy now, as he is known to suck, and not just for inflicting Mase upon us

oh, and that dude from the Shamen, Mr. C. Absolute pants

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Barman for shamelessly recycling most of his old tracks for anything new he does.

And whoever raps on "Men in Blue" by Prince Paul. "The men in blue are like a crew / they do whatever they want to do" and "I'm Officer O'Malley / I shoot you in the alley". Yes, it's parody but even so it doesn't stop me wanting to bite my ears off when I hear it.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Dee Dee Ramone wins it.

Who was the rap group that Amarillo released on the "World's Worst Rap Contest Winner" 7"? That's gotta come close.

mike a, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

was that Everlast on the men in blue thing?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

good point, Nick. Common does have his moments, but then he'll leave these gigantic awkward gaps between syllables that just drive me insane.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Step up, place your bet and I'll serve you fortune
But first I must issue just one word of caution
Dope lyric presentations are my sole notoriety
Everlast is on the rise movin through society
My voice is moist recitin choice vocals
Respected worldwide and feared by locals
Poppin junk out your punk mouth makin bets
It's too late for regrets, it's time to pay your debts
E-v-e-r-l-a-s-t is the name that I bear
A poetic demi-god with skin that's fair
So sleep on me now for my time will come
Everlast lasts forever, that's why I'm number one

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Eric Singleton (he was the guy that did raps on Modern Talking songs, making them even worse).

Rudolf (Rudolf), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Your mission:

1) download MHz's "World Premier"
2) [optional] oooh and ahh at RJD2's great usage of the Rolling Stones' "Monkey Man"; nod at the adequacy of Copywrite's lyrics
3) wait until the 1:54 mark, when Camu Tao's verse starts
4) wrinkle nose, squint, affect "smelled somethin' bad" face
5) wonder exactly what point in time Rita Repulsa and Doseone had a kid

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

also "Sweet Naomi Rap" = HAHAHAHAHAHA OH MY GOD this makes Debbie Harry sound like Lil Kim

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I take that back, it makes her sound like Biggie

oh come on, Mike D is the worst rapper ever and everyone knows it

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know that! If we're gonna mention any Beastie Boys I'd say MCA first.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone consider Sweet Insanity to be a "lost masterpiece"?

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it totally tiresome of me to ask that we not include mufuckers who aren't actually rappers, who just kinda rapped on like one song ever?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

#2: whoever rapped on "King Tim III" by Fatback. Was Fatback just one guy? The rap in that song is GODAWFUL.

"Fatback Band" were in fact a band. Of several people. And King Tim III is the MC, as he states at least fifteen times on the track. And it's from 1979 (often recognized as the first rap single ever) so cut it some fuckin' slack; it's better than "Rapper's Delight".

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, first off Common has absolutely NO PLACE on this thread, if for Ressurection alone, (which clearly you all haven't heard!)
El-P doesn't belong on it either.
I can't believe no one's mentioned the horrible simpering garbage that is Northern State.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

is this about "bad rappers" or bad writing?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Northern State is TERRIBLE, you are correct.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Barman
Mike Skinner
MC Ricky D

subgenius (subgenius), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

MC Ricky D

Slick Rick!?

djdee2005, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, hating on Slick Rick = uhoh

The whole El-P issue is pretty contentious; a lot of folx here can't stand his ohshitgottafitanothercouplewordsinbeforethenextbreak flow or his "life's ill" subject matter or the whole "I am incapable of making a happy beat" feel to his stuff. Me, I like to listen to paranoid Numan/Sabbath/RZA menage-a-trois epics every so often and since I'm not a Lou Reed fanboy I have to fill that "cantankerous NYC whiteboy auteur/noisemonger" gap in my life somehow.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone consider Sweet Insanity to be a "lost masterpiece"?

Eugene Landy, I'm sure.

Like I said, it's been ages since I've heard it, and it's under a pile of too many boxes to dig it up and see if I missed something the first time around. But I remember finding even the Bob Dylan duet cold and dreary.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Super Bowl Shuffle" gets a pass on a technicality -- it was produced for charity. Lord knows it wasn't produced for art.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Slick Rick!?

If I had a time machine, I'd go back in time and send The Get Fresh Crew to mime school. You say "La-Di-Da-Di" and "The Show" -- I say, "Feh." Plus, Slick Rick's success had the unfortunate side effect of encouraging Brits to rap.

All the same, I'm glad he isn't still in an INS holding cell.

subgenius (subgenius), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Willie Gault had some flow, seriously

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

This is Speedy Willie, and I'm world class.
I like runnin' but i love to get the pass.
I practice all day and dance all night,
I got to get ready for the Sunday fight.
Now I'm as smooth as a chocolate swirl,
I dance a little funky, so watch me girl.
There's not one here that does it like me,
My Super Bowl Shuffle will set you free.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a question concerning these E-mail that I see.
And I see that most of the time or should I say Jay Z does

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

If we're talking about actual rappers, I second the votes for El-P and Mike Skinner. Both of them have no sense of rhythm and timing, and even if it's supposed to be their "thing", it still sucks.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

In many senses of the word yes Phife "sucks" but fucking A his shit is the best most listenablest shit.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Way up top i meant to say Joyce Sims and not Gwen Guthrie. I don't know where the hell i got Gwen Guthrie from. My apologies. As I am probably one of the few people who still listens to Mantronik-produced Joyce Sims singles I suspect there was not much harm done to the thread by my momentary lapse of geekdom. Carry on.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I really and truly do love what El-P does with MUSIC, as in SOUND. It's really cool. But yeah, the rapping, ergh, i can't get with it. He bugs me when he raps. Or spews or whatever. And i like spewing and nonsense ans sci-fi rap, so i don't know why exactly it bugs me so much, but maybe his voice is just to ugly or something.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I had a scanner so I could post a picture here, but the worst rapper ever was called Boy White and his shit is unlistenable at any speed. He had a song called "Leslie." Kid Flash was no prize either: "Bus! Bus! I hate the bus!"

Common is not even close to being the worst ever. Nickalicious don't flip on me now.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

um, Kid Rock anyone?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

don't you wish that Thom Yorke wiped his ass with "Kid Rock" paper in a video?

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I think El-P is a good rapper period. His voice sounds cool over his own production.

Here's my MCA defence:

M.C. for what I AM and do

so as I pray and hope and the message is sent
and I AM living in the dreams that I have dreamt
because I'm down with the three the unstoppable three

and my body and soul and mind are pure
not polluted or diluted or damaged beyond cure
just lyrics from I to you recited
arrested, bailed but cuffed and indicted
enter the arena as I take the center stage
the lights set low and the night has come of age
take the microphone in hand as that I am a professional
speak my knowledge to the crowd and the ed. is special
I am the one and I am the master
I am the king and this is my castle
dwell in realms of now but vidi those of the past
seen a glimpse from ahead and I don't think it's gonna last
and you can bet your ass

I drop the L. when I'm skiing
I'm smoking and peaking
I put the skis on the roof almost every single weekend
can't stop the mindfuck when it's rolling along
can't stop the smooth runnin's when the shit's running strong
broke my bindings the lion with wings
preaching his word in the B. Boy sing
I AM one with myself as I turn to The
I prefer the dreams to reality
I prefer my life don't need no other man's wife
don't need no crazy lifestyle with stress and strife
but it's good to have turn to be a king for a day
or for a week or for a year or for a year in a day
come what may

I'm fishing with my boat and I'm fishing for trout
mix the Bass Ale with the Guiness Stout
fishing for a line inside my brain
and looking out at the world through my window pane
every day has many colors cuz the glass is stained
everything has changed but remains the same
so once again the mirror raised and I see myself as clear as day
and I AM going to the limits of my ultimate destiny
feeling as though Somebody were testing me
He who sees the end from the beginning of time
looking forward through all the ages is, was and always shall be
check the prophetic sections of the pages

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Naw B2D, I like Common, but sometimes his shit has such big gaps in it (both in terms of meter/rhythm and strange wtf?-inducing lyrical about-faces) that it can be very frustrating.

One of my least favorite MCs is Missy Elliot, but criticising her is a no no.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I like the anti-momentum devices in both Common's and Missy's rapping, the sense that they might just say ANYTHING next. I appreciate that.

You'll find plenty of people to agree with you about Missy. Just not me.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

No one's mentioned Too Short, a truly awful rapper who's
been tirelessly flooding the market with shit for
twenty years. Ironically, his beats are often great
(not enough to compensate, though)

squirl plise, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, Kid Rock. I forgot about him. Is that even rapping, though?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

El's actually shown some versatility lately. He's a lot more lucid and measured and straightforward on some of his recent tracks -- "We're Famous", most notably, as well as the untitled Akira tribute track ("Punk Theme"?) on his Weareallgoingtoburninhell Megamix and his verse on "Oxycontin Pt 2" from Definitive Jux Presents 3. And compare his '96/'97 Co Flow stuff with Fantastic Damage -- his earlier stuff like "8 Steps to Perfection" and "Corners '94" is a lot more accessible and straightforward, and if it was the first stuff you'd've heard from him then the manic nature of Fan Dam* might not be the point-blank merciless assault of beatniky run-on antagonism that haters hear.

*not to be confused with Van Dam, who is a total stoner and cannot really wrestle all that well

Not to be all challops, but I don't think Vanilla's rapping in that song is that bad. His flow is a little bit stiff, his style is derivative, and the choruses are shit, but otherwise he has some skill.
