Geto Boys Greatest Hits Screwed and Chopped CD: WTF?

After ILX's kindly assistance with my recent query about the classic or dud status of the Geto Boys (Geto Boys - S/D, and furthermore, C/D), I bought a hugely overpriced import CD of their 'Greatest Hits Screwed & Chopped'.
Does anybody else out there have this?

I don't know if it's the case that my CD has been mispressed, or if it's a colossal exercise in Brechtian audience alienation techniques, but the whole thing seems to have been recorded at half-speed (ie. all beats and voices sound like a 33rpm record playing at 16rpm - this is not as good as it might sound from a cursory description!).
Anyway, is it actually meant to sound like that, or was I just very unlucky?

M Carty (mj_c), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, this is funny. It is actually supposed to be like that. DJ Screw made his name selling "screwed" tapes out of his trunk, the music slowed down to a minimum. It has something to do with Texan drug culture as well, since cough syrup is big there. Just turn off your phone, turn up your stereo and get your Lester Bangs on.

Love,
Sebastian

Essdot, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

so its screwed but not chopped?

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's chopped in the sense of being continously mixed too. OK, that is really interesting, but I think I might well need to get a refund on this one!
Is there an 'unscrewed' version available?

M Carty (mj_c), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i want this cd!

djtron, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

please sell me your cd marty

djtron, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

er... it's not Marty, you know. Honestly, I don't really know if you'd want to hear this! It's quite 'challenging'.

M Carty (mj_c), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

please rip it and put it on soulseek, i NEED to hear it.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Some people will buy fuckin' anything. (Not you, M C. You were obviously hoodwinked.)

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I am also a proud owner of "Geto Boys Greatest Screwed & Chopped." The screwed version of "Damn, It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta" is urgent & key tho

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus, I need to hear that... anything that could stretch out longer the verse where the "president" raps about being a gangster is excellent.
Yeah, M Carty - I think you could auction this thing off here and make some pocket cash! I would bid!

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

(or link to where you bought the import)!

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

phil go and learn about the screwed up click before opening your stinky mouth dude

pay respect

rip dj screw

tron, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

>phil go and learn about the screwed up click before opening your stinky mouth dude

I remember when I used to have a cassette Walkman, and the batteries would run low...do I need to learn anything more than that?

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

it's funny because he's stupid.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a normal Geto Boys Greatest Hits album. You can buy it with a DVD extra (for a couple of bucks) or by itself. The cover has Geto Boys in yellow and little pictures of all their albums.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

No, don't sell it! Take some codeine/cough syrup. Listen to the music. Go go go.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this DJ Micheal Watts of Swishahouse? He's slowed down a Scarface best of as well. Chopped is where a tiny phrase will be repeated over and over, like the needle is stuck. Micheal Watts isn't that slow but he chops alot.

scg, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I really don't think it would be right to auction something that doesn't seem that hard to come by, and plus I'd imagine most of you potential bidders may well be from the US, from whence my CD was imported to the UK in the first place.
So, as a public service, I've checked on Amazon.com, and it appears you can order a nice new copy for considerably less than my copy cost me! Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000089Y9G/qid%3D1078906209/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/002-7475489-3511248

Caveat to the muthafuckin' emptor, though! The person upthread who likened it to when your old-school walkman's batteries would slow down and warp the music was OTM. So I'm sure you could save yourself a few quid simply by listening to your favourite Geto Boys tapes in the same way.

MAN, THAT SCREW SHIT LAME AS HELL, YALL NEED TO HOPP OFF THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

REDBONE$$ (RED BONE), Friday, 12 March 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

M Carty and Redbone$$ need to do more codeine.

djdee2005, Friday, 12 March 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I'm still not quite sold on the Screw. The hip hop station in Memphis (nooooorth, raise yo thumbs up!) plays a good deal of the chopped/ screwed stuff late night (usually Three-Six). Now I've never used the syzzurp recreationally, so perhaps getting my head right would enhance my appreciation. Still, what I've heard is rather blah.

Will (will), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the idea that you need to take codeine to enjoy it is kind of lame and inaccurate and maybe sort of trivializes the problem of narcotic abuse, i think. the music is really not associated at all with syrup anymore. and codeine syrup isn't really a popular recreational drug anymore because of competition from cheaper, cooler pharmaceuticals like oxycontin.

William Wiggins, Friday, 12 March 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

you people who say screw music is stupid are the same ones who made faggots like Nelly Ja Rule platinum

C-sick, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't judge screw until you've heard the screwed and chopped version of "Act a Fool" by Ludacris.
"Aaaaaaaawwwwwwww yyooouuu jjjuuusssttt ggooottt hhoommee fffrrrooomm ppaayyiinnggg tthhheee bbbiilllsss whuchu/whuchu gon' ddooooo
AAACCTTT A FFOOOOOOOOOOOL"

Sengai, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
This would be so much better without Michael Watts dropping in on the middle of tracks. Completely ruins "Mind Playin' Tricks" and "Damn It Feels Good..."

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 26 July 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm warming to my chopped and screwed Unbreakables. I agree on the lameness of the constant "Michael Watts! Swisha House Remix!" but dropins suck from anyone.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

re: drop ins.
I once downloaded Beyonce's "Crazy In Love" and some chud had recorded his voice over the beginning going "YOOOOOO JAAAAAAAY-Z!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" or some such shit.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

A drop in is the worst kind of sound grafitti: no art at all, just pissing on the tree to let you know he's got a dick.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

You gotta forgive Michael Watts for it though. The man has provided so much goodness...

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't much mind Just Blaze's drop ins anymore. DJ Red Alert just annoys the hell out of me.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

So let me get this straight. Ive never heard a screwed and chopped CD. They literally just slow it down. That's it? Nothing else? Lame.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Not exactly. Peek around and google a bit; there's lots of easily accessible sample tracks. A good chopped and screwed song feels like a totally different animal than the song it was taken from; only the bad ones sound like they've been slowed down and "that's it".

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The best thing about c&s is the chopping, not the slowness. And Michael Watts is a don.

i like this unbreakables c + s i bought but the drop-ins do suck hard. should i bother with the regular version of unbreakables? does one need both????

Ô¿Ô (eman), Sunday, 3 July 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

i'm gonna go put fake drop-ins on popular tracks now.

Chris R., Monday, 4 July 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

i find it odd that the original poster noticed the obvious screwing but not the equally obvious chopping.

Josh (Josh), Monday, 4 July 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

ok... i'm listening to this and wondering where the hell the version of "mind of a lunatic" is from. the lyrics are totally different from the s/t album version - anyone know where it's from?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 16 July 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

or, not totally different but there are some additional lines i've not heard before (bushwick says something about choosing "to live in reality" or summat).

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 16 July 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

i think it might be "skitso", the final track off bushwick's solo debut album "little big man".

'skitso' contains bushwick's two verses from 'mind of a lunatic', plus an additional verse. it's also slowed down to a narcotic pace, and there's a skit at the start (hence the name!) where someone goes to visit bushwick in a lunatic asylum or somesuch.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 16 July 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

actually, it has two extra verses, with the two '...lunatic' verses sandwiched in the middle. and the word 'lunatic' is replaced with 'bushwick'. i don't think there's any mention of "to live in reality" in the additional skitso verses, so maybe you're talking about something different.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 16 July 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

okay, here's the mp3

geto boys - mind of a lunatic (s&c)

i obfuscated the title and id tags just to be on the safe side. could this be the grip it! on that otha level version?
