Fucking hell - that's the only Smiths song that really does depress me.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

all those songs are depressing as fuck, what is wrong with people?!?!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

so why don't we list our own actual depression-beaters here?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

no, depressive songs get you out of your mope because you can just honestly wallow in it and get past it all. Happy songs when you're depressed just make you want to kill.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I can see that but I'm surprised something as cold as "I Know It's Over" tops the poll rather than "There Is A Light..." or "Asleep" or whatever yr wallowing song of choice might be.

If I'm miserable I tend to put on comforting instrumentally stuff, like The Orb or something.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

well i think it depends, i like to listen to what i deem to be melancholic music when i'm feeling melancholic, but disco vibes can certainly cheer me up.

this all reminded me of that scene in Father Ted when Ted plays 'Shaft' and it cheers the miserable other priest up, who then leaves, gets on a bus and hears Radiohead come on the radio and immediately sinks back into misery. So 'Shaft' is the best song for depression, proven by TV

My god, I used to wallow in "I Know Its Over" like a pig. That stuff has its uses, but now when I'm depressed I just wanna get out of it; for some of us it's a slippery slope(RIP Spalding, hope you don't mind the pun). Escapism is good, but I like music that helps you confront the darkness. "Stay Positive" by The Streets helped me out a lot last year when things went bad...it still sounds weird to me, but the whiteboy UK rapper was total fucking light in my world. Whatever works, right?

bren, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

what in the fuck is that bowling for soup song? is it currently on the charts or something?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Bowling For Soup are one-third of the worst live show I was ever forced to endure - Catch-22, Sum-41 and BFS after Catch-22 had lost whatever buzz they once had and before the other two had hits. It was sheer torture.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Who the hell are Bowling For Soup?
Whats the top ten? The link wont open for me.

Ramon D, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Bad punk-pop band.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The darkness made it into the top 20?

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Joseph Spence. It's instant happines for me when I'm at my worst.

cws (cws), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick Cave's "Ship Song"

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

When I'm sad or depressed, I put on a song that's a poor rewrite of "Teenage Dirtbag" which in turn is a good rewrite of "Creep". This cheers me up as then I can say "At least I never wrote this old toffee..."

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

where's that big hug music thread when we need it?
what was it called again? oh and that MDMA pop thread too.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

As usual, SCANDANAVIAN/PROGRESSIVE/SYMPHONIC/BLACK/HARDCORE METAL IS THE ANSWER!!!
