Lawyers for White Stripes lead singer discuss plea deal

The defense team for White Stripes lead singer Jack White was negotiating a plea deal with prosecutors on Tuesday.
White is accused of repeatedly punching the lead singer of another band in the face and is charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault.

Walter Piszczatowski, White's attorney, told District Judge Paula G. Humphries that White's defense team had conducted a "significant amount of discussion" with prosecutors and were close to a deal.

White, who has pleaded innocent, was in court Tuesday for a pretrial hearing that was delayed when Piszczatowski asked for more time to work out a deal.

Piszczatowski said a "wrinkle" had appeared in the negotiations.

The hearing was expected to resume later Tuesday.

The Dec. 13 fight between White and Von Bondies lead singer Jason Stollsteimer began shortly before midnight at the Majestic Theater Center, where both men were in the audience for another concert.

Stollsteimer, of Detroit, told police that White punched him seven times in the face. Police said Stollsteimer's right eye was bruised and swollen, and he was bleeding from his nose. He was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he was treated and released.

White, of Detroit, went to the police after the fight and gave a statement saying he struck Stollsteimer in self-defense.

White faces no jail time to a maximum of one year in prison and a $1,000 fine if convicted.

The Detroit-based White Stripes are one of the most critically acclaimed groups in music today with Blender magazine calling them "the greatest rock & roll band in the world."

I must've missed this the first time around--what concert?

I think it was Air Supply.
