Need NYC store recommendation, jazz specialty?

I'm looking for a place in NYC where I can pick up the CD George Lewis Plays Hymns--there's a song on the CD we're hoping to be able to play at a relative's funeral, tomorrow (the song, What a Friend we Have in Jesus, was a favorite of the deceased and we've only just now been able to track down the artist and the album it appears on).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

perhaps also try footlight records.

Academy for sure.
18th st for CD's
10th st for Vinyl
Footlights has a lot of Jazz (and Showtunes too, if thats your thing).

What label is it on?

For most mainstream jazz, the Tower near Broadway & 4th St has a pretty decent selection.

For improv/downtown/European jazz, Downtown Music Gallery on Bowery (just south of 4th St) may have some things that you can't find at Tower.

Jazz Record Center
236 West 26th St.
Room 804
New York, NY 10001
212.675.4480

It's in print, so you might also want to try the larger stores like J&R Music World (jandr.com) or one of the Virgin outlets.

isn't Jazz Record Center all vinyl?
they also have weird hours...

Russ, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the J&R in Manhattan has a pretty ridiculous jazz selection.

Same with Tower on W.4th & Bway - that's the first place I'd call.

as much as i hate to recommend the place, Norman's Sound & Vision on Cooper Sq., just south of St. Mark's.

I walk past Footlight every day. It is next door to me. I've never bought anything there because they're ungodly expensive.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

keep an eye on footlight. they have 50% sales from time to time, and when that happens you can totally clean up.

hi,

what are the boutique noise shops in the greater metro area?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

TRY SECOND HAND ROSE MUSIC AT 48 EAST 12TH STREET, OFF BROADWAY
THEY HAVE AN AWESOME COLLECTION OF VINYL AND CDS IN ALL CATEGORIES
THAEY ARE ALSO VERY HELPFUL IN SEARCHING OUT SPECIFIC WANTS.

amanda liebman, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

DO YOU KNOW JON WILLIAMS/IAN JOHNSON?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't like second hand rose. they have lots of "classic" stuff, but they fail the indie/noise/metal/hardcore/experimental test.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

you never answered my question? ^^^

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Second Hand Rose is also fun because they're a throwback to old-fashioned music stores run by insane people, as opposed to brain-dead college students. Overpriced in some cases, and they make up a lot of the prices as they go along, but they do have some neat things (along with a lot of not-neat things). Stay away if you're allergic to dust/mold.

i don't know amanda!

and fer noises, i usually mailorder. but other music has stuff and so does kim's.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax!, you might be able to buy your records from a member of sightings at kim's.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

hey lauren, do you know the girl with the blonde hair who works at kims? she's cute. maybe she can be my springtime crush.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

what floor? if it's the second floor then i think i do.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

first floor :( she always looks vaguely disaffected/snobbish, though. so that's a bummer.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm. well, that's no indication of anything. you'd look disaffected if you worked there, trust me.
