i've never asked a question here before and i feel a bit shy but i need to know if this is true quickly, yes or no, is it true tell me now

'', Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

no, they're both on...Universal eventually...

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

roc-a-fell is Island Def Jam

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

allhiphop reported the rumor but I haven't heard anything for real on it....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

if mos def put out a record with all just blaze and kanye productions, i'd be pretty excited.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Mos and Don Cheadle should form Black Star II and rap entirely in fake British accents

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

they're on kanye's new label, which is sort of a part of roc-a-fella and some other big label.

William Wiggins, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

ok william wiggins i choose to believe you, that sounds feasible
did anyone else notice that common's verse on get them high is really good. i think kayne said to him, hey common, remember how you used to spit, back when you were making ressurection? yeah, do it like that again or you're not allowed on this record.

'', Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Common's verse was that good. Sorry.

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought his verse barely made sense, and the way he broke up his lines was just awkward rather than clever...the weakest guest verse on "college dropout"

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

kanye's producing common's next record and has called that essentially "the most important thing i've ever done" so he probably wasn't dropping ultimatums all over the place because he still wants get paid

andrew s (andrew s), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the weakest guest verse on "college dropout"
Which says a lot.

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, Common's verse on there is awful. that long awkward pause between the words "remote" and "control" makes me want to break things it's so annoying.

I don't think it's been decided what label Kanye's imprint is going to be on yet, although the Roc would be fools if they let him take it somewhere else. I mean, they gave labels to Cam and Beans, and Kanye's probably going to be selling a lot more records than either of them.

the MTV.com article said Kanye's label is going to have Common on it, but I dunno what the status of Common's current contract is, if he still owes MCA any albums or what.

there have been rumors floating around lately about Roc-a-fella signing both Black Star (which Kweli didn't confirm when asked, but didn't entirely deny either), and Dead Prez (which is encouraged by that "Hell Yeah" rmx w/ Jay). it would be pretty crazy if Dash followed the lead of Kanye's success with a 'conscious' type album and took the whole label in that direction.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i guess you lot don't really rate ressurection then either, cos thats his style on that whole record. it's one of my favourite hiphop records. i know it's fashionable to hate on common these days though.

'', Wednesday, 10 March 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

common gave up the innovations of rap for the older innovations of post-modern poetry. lawless enjambment and talking like yoda makes for some pretentious shit. the worst verses on the college dropout are the spoken word, right? is that saul williams or a saul willaims hack?

i liked electric circus a lot.

asfdzxc (asfdzxc), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

rocafella needs to sign more people. bleek can't compete alone with g-unit at of nyc thug rap. they seem to be signing a bunch of veteran, more underground acts. mop and dirty are the last two that the roc parent label signed?

asfdzxc (asfdzxc), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

rocafella needs to sign more people.

You mean like Samantha Ronson and Posh Spice?

Sorry.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

rjd2 should sign with rocafella!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it'd go a little something like this

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Waitaminnit...this means Mos Def is gonna eventually release another album, right!?! HOOYAW!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

all the rumors I've heard were about Black Star, not Mos Def. I kind of doubt another Mos solo album will ever happen, or at least not anytime soon at this point. they've started to do a new BS album a few times now but it keeps getting put off again, usually because Mos gets a movie role.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

it would certainly explain the only low point of The Black Album, when Jigga sez he wishes he could rap like Common Sense. Ouch. Jockin' wack, pseudo-intellectual, hippified MCs don't flatter Hove.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

mf doom totally needs to make a track where he samples the "i'm gonna put on an iron shirt/and chase the devil out of earth" line from "chase the devil"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

jay-z has been on commons dick from the start though, he's always said his name in interviews, calling him 'the rappers rapper' and that sort of thing and if you think about the cadences and a lot of his punchlines and wordplay he DOES rhyme like a (simplified) common circa resserction.

'', Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Well if Common and Mos and Kanye are all in the same place then one well-timed plane crash or bus crash or chunk of satellite falling from the sky would do the world lots of good.

What happened to Just Blaze? It seems like he kind of disappeared.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Except for tracks on the Black Album, the last Bleek album, etc.?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The Black Album did nothing for me--I had no idea JB had anything to do with it. I just saw that Rick Rubin did a track and died a little inside.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the three justblaze tracks i've heard from the bleek album are awesome

dave k, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Just Blaze still does a lot of work, he just doesn't have as high a profile as Kanye right now. if you look at most recent Roc albums, he has twice as many productions as Kanye. he's all over the Young Gunz album. and yeah, his beats on the Bleek album are awesome, especially "Everything's A Go" and "Just Blaze, Bleek and Free".

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The Black Album did nothing for me--I had no idea JB had anything to do with it. I just saw that Rick Rubin did a track and died a little inside.

Because it's a bad track or just because it's Rick Rubin?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Because it's Rick Rubin! I mean, I love Slayer like I love my mother (ie lots) but that early Def Jam hiphop sound really turns me off. Also there's this record store in DC that's owned by a guy named Rick that looks just like Rick Rubin (but who obv is not RR) except he's got freaky Howard Hughes fingernails and walks around barefoot so I conflate the two and get weirded out.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if Black Star releases an album of Kanye West tracks, I'm even more excited.

adam, I can understand being put off by that old sound, but have you heard 99 problems? It actually works very well, I think.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll d*wnload it.

As far as Mos goes, aren't people worried that we'd get a whole album of "Rock n Roll" and "Umi Says" stuff rather than, you know, "B-Boy Document" goodness?

adam (adam), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm more worried that he's just straight-up never gonna record ever again.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"if lyrics sold then truth be told, id probably be just as rich and famous as jay-z" off new talib album which incidentally has a few kanye joints.

scissors (Honda), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Mos Def is still recording, but he winds up on compilations like the Rawkus Soundbombing series. I've heard he'll be featured on Soundbombing 4 (e.g., "Mos Def Presents Soundbombing 4" or something random and stoopid).

subgenius (subgenius), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ok its an advance but one kanye joint samples "eleanor rigby"?! grey album and ghostface and then this, maybe mos def will cover 'yesterday' next.

scissors (Honda), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Believe it or not, MTV's dropping the spice on Mos. Heard he just had a listening party for a new mix tape he put together. Been waiting forever for dude to put out an album and all we get is Alicia Keys video appearances. I mean, he looks cool and all but where's my rhyme?

Tomiwa, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Affecting a fake English accent in a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

heard mos is staring in the bigscreen adaptation of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe

fucking hell xpost

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

it would be pretty crazy if Dash followed the lead of Kanye's success with a 'conscious' type album and took the whole label in that direction.

not necessarily 'concious', but definitely more backpacker: http://capitolrecords.com/dilated/thisway/

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw this video last night and liked it. some nice flute hooks in it..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

man if kanye didn't do this beat, someone is seriously studying College Dropout and Just to Get By

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

is that hitchhikers guide thing true?
who is he going to play?

robin (robin), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

That Dilated Peoples song is awful. Have they ever done another song as good as "Worst Comes To Worst"?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man, i listen to the original to that 'worst comes to worst' (william bell 'I Forget To Be Your Lover ') like every day. such a beautiful song

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

the mighty mos def will play Ford Prefect, the alien who takes earthling Arthur Dent - played by The Office's Martin Freeman - on a strange galactic trip.

Nik (Nik), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

if they pull it off, that (mos + the film) has to be a better prospect than a new mos def record.

Nik (Nik), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Mos Def is the 10th-ranked contender for king of NYC in the new XXL. That's the craziest/most depressing thing I ever saw.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)
