me:art fucking tatum manSent at 05:50 PM on Tuesdayme:i'm just drunk enough that i had a realization (or if you prefer just drunk enough that i think i had a realization) but not so drunk that i'm immediately writing it off as drunk babbledeej:haha yeah?me:part of the reason i dig the guy so much is that the way he fucks with the tempo when he plays is like a dj on the turntablesme:the way he speeds up and slows down dramatically without missing a note, not a blur or distortion, every note he hits is a little gem coming out of the pianome:monk goes sifting in the river and comes up with dirt and gems and people go "damn that's some beautiful dirt"me:but tatum goes sifting and comes out the water with a sifter full of little diamonds every single time
art tatum screwed & chopped

Like listen to "Willow Weep for Me" on Piano Starts Here (which you can do through the miracle of the internets right here!). Dude brings it up to 45 rpm, down to 20 rpm, back up to 33, never missing an accent in this funky walking bassline, and he's just laying down laser cut gems on top like Jacob the fucking Jewler. Every note he hits is the perfect note. Of course he hits that note: that's where it goes. Why would you hit another note?
And the ending! He's like "Oh watch out now I'm changin it up, what am I gonna do with this atonal bassline? Are you paying atte--FUCK YOU! I'M DONE. PEACE."

fyi all this was actually in reference to Tatum Pole Boogie which in my defense comes immediately after "Willow Weep for Me" on the record
