not saying Bob Mould invented overdriven guitar, but listened to "Beaster" today and it sounded like Foo Fighters b-sides.

add on...

Red Krayola's "Coconut Hotel" changed my life. I didn't like it then, I don't like it now, and will probably never hear it again unless by accident, but up until I heard it I had no idea just how 'outside' outsider music got. The fact that it was released blew my college freshman mind.

After hearing things like Sukora's "Tower" (which is pretty much just silence), Reynols and Emil Beaulieu's non-playing vinyl / cassettes, and things like that, Coconut Hotel seemed very tame in comparison.

Oh and I was a Fugs freak until I heard the Godz, who were / are a million times cooler

Heh. Bob Mould was the first thing I thought of when I saw the title of this thread -- Husker Du was the first punk band I really fell hard for. Beaster ain't the problem, though. Everything he's done since since is. He's apparently in a good mood these days:

That's good for him, but bad for us. Bob was always more interesting musically when he was angry and/or miserable.

the work of many an "IDM" artist, especially those involved with glitchness.

well, it wasn't actually released, was it? at least not until decades later, when drag city got their hands on it... (and they'll release anything!)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? I thought it was officially released in 67! I could be wrong tho...

anyway, wasn't AMM on a major label in the US?

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

right on. I stand corrected.

The record still blows though. And Mayo Thompson looks like Paul Simon in the booklet.

i go back, forth, forth, then back with the verve/ashcroft. in a way which i am with no one else. really flummoxing because i hear a potential to be great not ever fully accessed. just hints and allegations, and most groups make it easy by not ever being so ambitious frankly

duke roaster, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I will have to agree with the glitchyness thing although there still are some great things done with that, alot of the first stuff I heard has not aged very well.

hector (hector), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I've ever disliked an IDM recording.

there seems to be quite a substantial amount of anti-morr music (and similar stuff) feeling around lately.

How about late Mercury Rev? I remember hearing "Deserter's Songs" and thinking it was the coolest . . . now every indie boy has that irritatig high-pitched Southern Wayne Coyne falsetto thing going on.

Josh Rothman (mrjosh), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr Bungle introduced me to a lot of experimental rock which I love to death, but now I don't really listen to Bungle anymore.
