Coolie Dance Riddim (& Other Riddims)

It's behind both Mr. Vegas' "Pull Up" and Nina Sky's "Move Your Body" (which I've been LOVING since I heard it), and according to the Jamaican Observer, it's poised for a breakthrough similar to Diwali. It's doing great in the northeastern US, at any rate.

There'd be a question here, but I can't think of one, so I just wanted to post something, because this stuff sounds GREAT. Maybe, in addition to testifying to the greatness of this beat, perhaps folks can post examples of other choice riddims (& where they're used best)?

For Coolie Dance search Elephant Man's "Wine Yourself", Sean Paul's "Feel Alright" and whoever does "Bare As She Dare" (probably the best chorus on this riddim).

Mad Instruments riddim has a similar carnivalesque upbeat feel to Coolie Dance. Dreamweaver is similarly percussive and anthemic.

Yeah, Tim, I was just reading about Dreamweaver on Strongo's blog - well, he mentions it - which lead me to actually trying to find out what the heck the Nina Sky & Mr. Vegas tracks used.

Skimming that thread MG linked to was like sneaking downstairs on Christmas & just staring at all the goodies.

I LUV WAYNE MARSHALL - "FAT INFINITE" !
a conversion tune for me - wasn't much of a Marshall fan before then
I know many don't rate him, but that's one of my tunes of the year for 2003

I haven't heard any of the above versions yet, but till now my fave by far is TOK's "unknown language" with E-Man's "genie dance" running a distant distant second.

NY's Hot97 was giving a female version last week that sounded pretty good. Maybe it was the Nina track? It definitely wasn't the Ce'cile version. Well alright, I'm psyched to hear those.

Tracks I'm feeling: Assasin's "girls alone" (dreamweaver) & the double punch of E-Man "all out" and Wayne Marshall "going to the party" on the ALL OUT riddim.

Yeah All Out is great, but I don't know if "Going To The Party" works so well on it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ha - a fave of the YEAR distracted me from remembering what might be the best Coolie Dance track:
Kid Kurrupt - "Pride"

"mi Gal take pride inna yu panties..."

Elephant Man's interjections of "independent" seem to duttily subvert feminism, but the spirit of fun might win over the independent women, too
