There's quite a few I haven't been able to listen all the way through to, but "Animal Kingdom", his pro-vegan anthem from Crystal Ball comes to mind.

"We're All Members of the Animal Kingdom/Leave your brothers and sisters in the seas"

Actually I'm listening to it now and though the lyrics are ludicrous in the extreme, the song itself isn't too bad.

I dunno. Whattayougot?

Batman - Arms of Orion - and I'm a defender of the Batman soundtrack, it's just ugh.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

But he was looking for a lover in the Sea of Tranquility!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"When 2 R in Love." Just kinda blah.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 06:15 (twenty-one years ago)

But "When 2 R in Love" has the cool vocal effect that occurs when he says (I think) "drip drop, drip drop/wanna wanna wanna".

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

three. chains. o. gold.

plebian plebs (plebian), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Jedmond: Sure. But it would've been better if he'd tacked on seven minutes of warped funk at the end, like he did on the 12-inch of "I Wish U Heaven."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I was merely pointing out it does have some redeeming features - not arguing that it was great or even good. And every song is improved by having 7 minutes of warped gospel funk -> warped paranoid funk at the end it. "Say Hello to my friend the blue angel" "Oh My god it's his guitar!"

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, that's easy: "Love Song", his duet with Madonna. Next!

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the one he nicked from PIL?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Definetely something off Batman, yeah.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

People, you are all forgetting about the existence of "Dolphin".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Second for "Arms of Orion" -- total crap.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a linked concept album innit

(countdown until my Dan Perry smackdown...three...two...one...)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Jughead", people.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Some memories did not need to be revived.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

How beautiful do the words have 2 be
Before they conquer every heart?
How will U know if I'm even in the right key
If U make me stop before I start?
CHORUS:
If I came back as a dolphin
Would U listen 2 me then?
Would U let me be your friend?
Would U let me in?
U can cut off all my fins
But 2 your ways I will not bend
I'll die before I let U tell me how 2 swim
And I'll come back again as a dolphin

Why does my brother have 2 go hungry
When U told him there was food 4 all?
This is the man that stands next 2 the man
That stands 2 catch U when U fall (Oh!)

CHORUS

If I'm under water, will U find me? (Find me {x4})
Will U shine a light and try 2 guide me?
It's happened before, I've knocked on your door
But U wouldn't let me in

How beautiful do the words have 2 be
Before they conquer every heart? (Oh!)

If I came back as a dolphin
Would U listen 2 me then?
Would U let me be your friend?
Would U let me in?
U can cut off all my fins
But 2 your ways I will not bend
I'll die before I let U tell me how 2 swim
Come back in the end as a dolphin (Oh)
(I'll come back, baby)
(Let me in, let me in) As a dolphin
(Be my friend) Dolphin
(Yeah, yeah)

Dolphin
As a dolphin
As a dolphin
As a dolphin

THERE IS NOTHING ON EARTH MORE EMBARRASSING THAN THIS (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think "Dolphin" rocks.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I second the Jughead nomination - that song is unlistenable.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

U can cut off all my fins

Do U lie?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

At least you can dance to "Jughead"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I like "Jughead" well enough; then again the whole Diamonds and Pearls album holds fond memories for me, so I tend to just play it all way the way through.

I was gonna say "Ronnie Talk to Russia" but yeah, whew, "Arms of Orion" is a real stinker. Like he hired out Richard Marx to write him a ballad or something.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

re: "Ronnie Talk to Russia" - no way, that song's got serious camp value! Plus all songs that end with the sounds of exploding bombs are good.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

yep, The Rainbow Children owns this one

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

there's nothing ridiculous about "The Animal Kingdom," it's his last great song

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sexy Motherfucker" is one of the worst (not to mention least sexy) commercially available songs by ANYBODY, EVER. But since I haven't been able to listen to a Prince album all the way through since 1988 or so, it's quite possible he's done even worse at least once or twice.

chuck, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

um. sexy mf is terrible and "animal kingdom" is the last great song?
this is going directions i couldn't have planned.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i like "dolphin"!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 March 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

No, Dan OTM. Dolphin is just unbearably bad.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sexy M.F." is a great jam. Not so much a "good song," but a great jam.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

twelve years pass...

Bumped now that we have another 12 years 'o' music 2 choose from. Eye'll have 2 think hard about this, because while eye don't rate every Prince song highly, eye can easily find merit in some element 'o' the lesser moments. Can anyone think 'o' a Prince track that is totally devoid 'o' merit?

WHERE'S JIM!? (Turrican), Wednesday, 27 April 2016 20:12 (nine years ago)

I really felt like the Planet Earth album was full of songs that didn't have a thing about them I liked, whereas even lesser Prince efforts prior to that, I found songs I liked or at least ideas I liked.

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 22:03 (nine years ago)

might even be the only Prince album I ever threw in a rubbish pile before finishing one listen
