David Byrne - Grown Backwards

New album on Nonesuch (what happened to Luaka Bop and the Virgin distro deal?), Byrne says it was grown backwards because he came up with the melodies first instead of the rhythms like usual. So yes it's less rhythm-oriented. Quiet and melodic, two opera arias and a Lamchop cover. I like it but I'm a sucker for Byrne.

I knew nothing of this! And he's on Nonesuch now? Awesome. His appearance on the Bonnaroo line-up might be the deciding factor in my maybe-going.

If you've never seen him, he's just beyond amazing live.

The album is out this tuesday, btw.

I'm looking forward to reading the responses to this.

I saw DB three times on the "Look Into The Eyeball" tour, and loved each show. He is, indeed, an amazing live performer. I can't wait to hear his new album.

He has a nice tan

the new one is pretty good, but it's not amazing by any stretch.

Oooh, I'm going to have to snap this up. I love love love Look Into The Eyeball. If this is even half as good as that record, I'll be happy.

Sweet! A fourth confirmation that DB is indeed great live. I actually saw him in '97, at Glastonbury, as the now-supposedly-legendary Radiohead gig was boring me to tears. And there instead was Byrne, in a suit made of muscles, doing an acid house version of Psycho Killer. Much better.

I gotta say though, IMHO Feelings is the real killer amongst his solo work (I listen to it more than any Heads album, at least).

i quite liked the glass, concrete & stone' song at the end of "dirty pretty things". is that on this?

Chuck OTM about Feelings, that album is superb. That last song with the accordion and upright bass and the lyric 'only one Jimi Hendrix in this whole wide world/just 30 teeth inside of our heads' ("Finite"?) is easily one of my favorite mellow-melodic Byrne moments of his entire career.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, glass concrete and stone is the first track on the album! I listened to this five times in a row today, it's not the best DB solo album (I'm a big fan of Eyeball and Feelings as well) but OTOH it's been a while since I listened to an album five times in a row, so it's not bad, just kind of pleasant and low-key.

I saw Mr Byrne at a bizarre, very long concert on September 15, 2001. He played a giddily apocalyptic version of "Nothing But Flowers" and a devastating version of "Buck Naked." He did not, however, play a single song off Feelings, which was disappointing because the album moved mountains when he played it at a concert a few years before.

Does anyone know if he still plays songs from that album live? Did he do any songs from it during the Eyeball tour?

"Amnesia" is beautiful, too.

I always though Eyeball's track sequencing was all skewed, it starts too slow. Can't wait for this, though.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to say he did Fuzzy Freaky and Dance on Vaseline and Miss America when I saw him on the Eyeball tour but I could be mixing that up with the previous tour. He definitely did "I Wanna Dance With Somebody." ;)

three weeks pass...
This album is surprisingly good. I haven't heard much talk about it. Underrated at this point. Very melodic with some nice bass playing. Consistent too.

I was at a rehearsal space recently and in the room next to ours Byrne was putting his touring band through the motions . It swung and it sounded fantastic. I'm always a sucker for the combination of strings + a simple rhythm section.
