Does Michael Jackson belong in 2001?

Do kids under 21 even know who he is, or rather, was? Can Michael Jackson still be a pop phenomenon after Backstreet/Britney/*NSync? What should his new album sound like? I remember when anything MJ would be an event, and it doesn't seem to be the case right now.

JoB, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yet again, check out what I wrote about him. (Thread entitled 'Michael Jackson Fuck Off and Die Already.' Hope it's not too vague where I'm coming from!)

dave q, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Michael's still trying... he's even slummed to attempt to have Fred Durst cameo on his upcoming record. (More of a case of Who's Slummin' Who? here)

Jackson will continue to become detached and less important. So will the Beatles. Time does that.

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always find it very sad when people try to do a comeback.

Ally, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The curse of the solo artist is that they can never split up.

Tom, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know why "dignified retirement" isn't an option taken more often, at least in cases where money isn't an issue.

Nicole, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pah: every record he releases is more bent than the last which is fine by me PLUS he is far too rich and powerful for the Man to pull a gary glitter on him… hurrah!

mark s, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anyone who even attempts to dispute whether or not Michael Jackson belongs in the 21st century has an embarrassingly pedestrian taste in art. He's a complete freak to be sure.... but Christ, in light of the derivative post-grunge, post-rap, post-pop-teen-boy/girl band shite that's circulating in the charts (and college charts too kids) right now.... I'll take some cringe-worthy $10 million ego trip over another Usher video anyday. Michael Jackson is a walking testament to extremism and escapism and defiance in the face of entropy and change. He could keep this up until he's 90, and I still doubt ANYONE around him will ever be truthful with him that it's so "bad." Sorry, bad pun. So he's stuck in 1987. Cope. What do ya want? Another crap Belle and Sebastian-fest on community college radio? Read inbetween the lines.....

Joseph, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree with that.

Sean, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

isn't it a 30 million dollar ego trip?

keith, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Joseph, You have just made ILM your little bitch.

Michael Taylor, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll take some cringe-worthy $10 million ego trip over another Usher video anyday

Difference being what? A few million?

bnw, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"He could keep this up until he's 90"

Yah, considering the fact that he doesn't have to worry about his looks leaving him. New layers of facial plastic would take centuries to naturally decompose...it should be cremation, whenever it happens. Janet's got the better fake nose, anyway

Now what about that "talent" part ?

Vic, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Joseph, You have just made ILM your little bitch.

Hardly. "It's all rubbish so I'll go for the song I can laugh at most." is a pretty stunted listening strategy. Good post nonetheless.

Tom, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Having the baddie from a Chuck Norris-flick be the adversary in the video is proof enough for me that Michael Jackson is now finally ready for Vegas. Watching him pull a Tommy Cooper in the Bellagio Showroom within 3 years or so would be tragic, maybe even unjust, but fitting. What saddens me though is not the fact that he's getting uglier every year by his own fault, nor the apparent given that by now he probably can't even perform the way he used to (I mean, how can you sing right with a nasal passage like that?!), but the fear that by now it'll take his demise or his really getting hurt before we all reach for our copy of Off The Wall and remember how good he once actually was.

Alacrán, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Much as I detest Jackson, I liked Joseph's post. I bet he agrees with me that Jarvis Cocker is but a grandstanding, secretly-Mail-reading Little Englander, for that stunt he pulled at the Brits. (He used the words 'children' and 'shocking' in the same sentence, he MUST be a 'Mail' reader!)

dave q, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Joseph is spot-on, as is dq. At the Brits IMHO, Jacko was too BIG, too WIERD, too GOOD to be contained within the tiny world of the backslapping Brit-Pop establishment, so they made a futile, pathetic gesture of defiance when they realised that he was what none of them could ever be. Like a kid tipping the board over when he's about to lose the game...

Dr. C, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Michael Jackson is a walking testament to extremism and escapism and defiance in the face of entropy and change."

Nobody wants to escape to where MJ is at. The only extreme thing about MJ is the look of his nose and even he seems to want to hide it in the "You Rock My World" video.

JoB, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wasn't Jarvis acting on the child-molesting allegations of the day? Joseph's comments were indeed spot on but I wouldn't go as far as to rehabilitate Jacko right now.

Alacrán, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"You Rock My World" is so limited, so lacking in the kind of strangeness and paranoia that made MJ great. It's just a wee bit too generic and bland. This is the sort of single that could have been made by Usher, could have been made by nearly any even slightly r'n'b influenced act of the past 15 years. This doesn't make it a terrible single, but it does make it a disappointing one.

Nicole, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sure he belongs in 2001. As an object of scorn and faint pity. He makes that Kylie song sound good ferchrissakes.

Edwardo, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How is it a disappointing single? When was the last time Michael Jackson put out a good single?

Ally, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, in terms of Michael Jackson being a larger than life character it's disappointing. It could be a frickin Aaron Carter single. His other duds, like "Blood on the Dancefloor" etc. were crap but at least were more MJ.

He hasn't had a great single in years, nearly decades, though.

Nicole, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I actually liked 'Do You Remember The Time'...

'You Rock My World' sounds like that Whitney Houston-song (can't recall the title, but Darkchild obviously produced it too...).

Alacrán, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i loved blood on the dance floor . i love freaks . i love michael .

anthony, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's with the hating on Usher?

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Usher sucks, step off.

Ally, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Right, and you can do a double-back handspring off a motorcycle?

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a sneaking suspicion that the answer to that is 'yes'. (This has probably arisen in the past, but I just realized that Ally reminds me heavily of Dr. Katz's Laura, but more angry, less apathetic. And Ally's got better hair.)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You better believe I can do that, I'm a biker chick, foo'. And Mitch, you don't know how many times I've been told that. There was a period in my life where my mom called me nothing but Laura. She also goes "pffff" a lot, especially when she's mad at Ben.

Ally, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I probably read that somewhere on ILx before and forgot about it and now it returns to me packaged as a new thought.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This weekend I dreamed the perfect mix—"State of Shock" into "Simply Irresistable" right? RIGHT??

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's just insane. You should just go back to managing Josie and the Pussycats and stop with this remix nonsense.

Ally, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm with Tracer on this one. But how about 'The Way You Make Me Feel' sliding into 'Leave Me Alone'...

Alacrán, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

aaron, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe MJ should do the club circuit in 2002. You know, get back to his roots. Ah yes, there's nothing I would like more than to see Michael Jackson playing to gatherings of 90 people.

I'm 15 and YES I DO know about Michael Jackson and I reckon he is the best entertainer EVER. His new album is great and if you people don't like it, shutup and buzz off!!!!

Carina, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just wanted to say theat if you don't have anything positive to say than just shut up about Michael Jackson , a lot of you might not know it but he has more fans than you'll ever be aware of.. I have a lot of things to say about the new groups singers too.. but I will not go down to that level , everyone has their own style & should have respect to one another.

sharona, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes

dave q, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let me just say a majority of his fans are under the age of 21. He is still an icon in today’s music industry.

Some of you people think it’s sad to make a comeback? I’d have to agree because Michael Jackson never went away, he’s merely releasing a new album and oh, it was such a flop wasn’t it? Despite Sony’s attempt to destroy album sales (he’s leaving Sony) his “comeback album” debuted at #1 in, ooowww let me count…13 countries! he’s losing significance isn’t he? And oh no, he’s already has a no.1 with “butterflies” oh don’t music lovers just hate him?

He's contributed too much to this world to end up as insignificant.

Don't let ignorance blind you or worse, believe what tabloids have to say. Judge for your self…but then, you can just admit you have difficulties in this area and we’ll forgive you.

action4777, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You MJ-haters need serious help...or maybe you should just try thinking.

Car, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm sure the people who says michael jackson is losing his touch are right just like when they said hammer and prince were gonna overtake michael jackson in the 80's and 90's???

if you don't want people to laugh in your face, then don't make pathetic statement on subjects you know nothing about, especially concerning michael jackson.

haterade4777, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its quite simple. MICHAEL JACKSON IS THE KING OF POP. YOU ARE ALL NARROW MINDED UNINFORMED MORONS!! :)

WomanInTheMirror, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I guess we can kill this thread now.. The fans have spoken.

Dave225, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hereby crown thee the funniest thing ever said on ILx: "Buzz off."

david h, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What kind of idiots are you guys?? Comparing Michael Jackson with little brats like Backstreet/Britney/Nsync who just strip on there videos to get some attention...just pathetic...Michael Jackson is a living legend who has composed some of the greatest music EVER with dance sequences better then any other artist...so just shut the fuck up!! The guys is old now..give him a break! No, he won´t be moonwalking all his life...but what he HAS BEEN, no one will EVER BE!! PEACE!!

Master DJ, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

PEACE!!

That wasn't a very peaceful message. You're an angry young person.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This statement brings with it a sense of relief.

Sean, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HAS BEEN

Isn't that what this thread is about? It's not asking "was he ever good?" It's asking if he's still "got it." I guess superfan answered definitively.

Dave225, Monday, 6 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Um...I'm 13 and I am a super huge fan, so is my best friend, also 13. He fucking rocks, of course I know who he is...everyone I've ever met knows who Michael is, even like...my 5 year old neighbor.

By the way, how are Britney Spears, Nsync and The Backstreet boys pop "phenomenons"?! Damn, they SUCK ASS!! They can't sing worth shit!! It's all about their looks...but, they don't have much of those either. Britney is a whore, and no one in any of those boy groups looks good.

Susie, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes i completly agree. Britney,NSync and Backstreet boys totally suck. I just don't get how Michael Jackson can be compared with any of these fake artists especially Britney. That woman is a croking machine. I must say she is a very good entertainer, but when it comes to the vocals she don't got it. anybody can entertain. Michael began stealing audiece by age nine.face it the man is amazingly blest and will forever be a legend. so all you Michael haters get off of it. there is nobody like him and i belief he is yet to come up with his best performnces ever. it's not your looks that count, it's the person you are and that you can do that count.PEACE

kui Mbugua, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael Jackson hAS done somethings that nobody has not done in history of human. For instance, the way of dancing, singing, and the way he makes everyfan to cry or to be excited of what he does. Michael Jackson is the father of these groups which are Backstreet, Britney, and NSync. These groups have learned how to dance as a group, but I don't mean thier style of dancing is similar to what Michael Jackson and his friends(his group dancers) do, no way. Eventhough these groups which are Britney, Backstreet, and NSync have tried to copy some style of Michael's dancing and his group dancers, they could't do anything. Britney and NSync have copied the Bacstreet's style of dancing and singing, so Bacstreet is more better than the two other groups.Michael Jackson is the only musician that has succeeded in making each of his performance difference from his other performances. As a result, Michael Jackson can still be a pop phenomenon after any group. Besides, none of the groups which are Britney, Backstreet, and NSync are not phenomenon they are just trying to dublicate what michael jackson has created before. I love MICHAEL Jackson, and he will be number one forever. Shame on everyone who do not like Michael Jackson, and tries in some way to hurt his feelings and his fan's feelings. I am 25 years old, and the only singer make me happy is him. God bless him and America.

Dustin Bonakdar, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

michael jackson is the greatest singer&pop star ever and is surley the most famous.his way of dancing is unlike any1 has ever seen and although alot of people try to copy, but no1 will ever make it.and how can u compare some1 that is truly the king of pop to a bunch of losers?!there has only been 1 michael jackson born and the world will never see some1 like him again.god bless him and america.

michael jackson was my favorite animatronic person on that one ride at Disneyland. i wish i could remember its name. i was thrilled when he lunged at me and tried to touch my hair. i wish emmanuel lewis and bubbles had been there too. if michael jackson has so money whyd didnt he use some of it to stop webster from being cancelled? that was the best show ever! do you think mj and alex karras were friends too? i also like the one where he turns to a yellow eyed werecatperson. john landis is top notch like michael and his best friend elizabeth. i dont know why latoya is always so mean to him. why do you think that is?

aspirin, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yah, considering the fact that he doesn't have to worry about his looks leaving him. New layers of facial plastic would take centuries to naturally decompose...it should be cremation, whenever it happens.
And in other news, the entire Beverly Hill Fire Department has finally put out the seven alarm blaze at the crematorium of the Schwantzen Brothers Funeral Home today. It was apparently triggered by the melting epoxy-based pseudo-flesh of a 20th century "pop star" apparently named Michael Johnson. There were no casualties though two firemen were taken to the medical centre after being overcome with fumes from the primitive "cosmetic polymers" that made up 65% of the "pop stars" cranium.
Now onto sports....

Lord Custos III, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think we all know how ridiculous this whole thing with Michael Jackson is, but yet we still can't quite look away. Its like passing a 5 car pile up on the side of the freeway, we know its tragic and wrong but still..... I have nothing to say against Michael Jackson the human (circa 1970's to sometime between color me bad and Nirvana) he was talented, a humanitarian to boot, as well as a very creative persona. And than suddenly like a Nazi staring at the Lost Ark he deteriorates into bones and plastic - the man has a shelf life that lasts longer than styrofoam for gods sake. Hes no longer a pop idol hes a sideshow freak. The majory of the people who know of Jackson as he was want to clap - we want to scream and chant and rave, we get to the point where our hands just barely press together to make an audible applause when suddenly we go "uh-u-oh...ooh....hes a freak now" and stop. I think its cool hes got fans still, I mean I guess hes an alright guy - aside from the current baby dangling and his general displacement from any social norms... but dont worry michael youll pull through and live on... for another 10 decades.

Wow. Dig all the hostility.
To those who didn't get the joke, This was a news broadcast from the future where Michael Jackson dies at the age of 145 and nobody in the mainstream really remembers him all that well. Notice the "news report" is about the fire, not about the ancient, half-forgotten "pop star" from back in the Elder Days of the 20th century.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Sunday, 24 November 2002 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I dont know about anyone else but I cant wait for when his VH1 behind the music special comes out. Ive been waiting with baited breath until the day that I find out just how messed up this mans private life is. I know it shouldn't matter but I have gone so far as to write to this thread so I might as well go the full distance. Hes like a 8th wonder of the wold, a mystery that is begging to be unraveled.

Nate, Monday, 25 November 2002 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

To even scratch the surface, his Behind the Music special would have to be three hours long with no commercial interruptions.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a very interesting written dialect, Mr "Rookie". Seems to be an Ali G impression of some sort.

>"we try to bash those kids at school

You go to school...? Well, pray learn something about the English grammar and language, my friend! Will see you go a long way. :-)

>coz their so gay.

Wow. ;-)

>lol im a guy only thing britney good for is a root
>dats why we watch
>her. her songs are gay ass lol..dont eva compare one or two hit >losers to mj lol his still spinning

In his grave perchance? The old MJ is long gone. Practically a different man in his appearance and in his music.

>it brintey onli got her hit me baby on more time shit lol to bad she >cant get a album to sell 50 million..wait to bad no one in histroy >could cept MJ..hmm i think that means alot lol so all u lil teenie >losers and grundge wierdo music lovers

As LCO says before me, grunge was over in 1994, really! I don't think you'll find that the musical tastes of people on this board can so easily be pigeonholed into "teenybopper" or "grunge", but then I suggest that you haven't really examined the site at all, just made an ill written defense of your hero.

>lol start listening to some
>real music and stop being critical of genisus whilst u follow apes."

Apes? well, aren't all humans that in some sense? ;-)
Hmmm, apes are supposed to have a very fine instinctive sense of rhythm as well...
Jackson ain't no musical genius; certainly not now. His only genius these days seems to be for pulling ridiculous bad-PR stunts, and increasingly degenerating into a laughing stock.

Montel, I think we're forgetting something very important in all of this. Ok, sure he touched some children. But the man is a great singer, and has entertained us for so many years.

Id like to give Kudos to Lord Custos for being the funniest man alive!! LOL

Ya know, I don't even care about Michael Jackson, I just go on here because he is a great topic for jokes and ludicrist onslaughts by oversensitive (and now thanks to Rookies contibution - BIZZARE) web slingers who really need to relax and take life a bit easier. I just want to know why women always feinted at his concerts, Im assuming its because the concert halls not well ventilated and fumes from the gallons of spirit gum used to reattach his face onto is plastic skeleton is making every one light headed...

I remember a small jibe I saw in Blender Magazine. It shows an eerie picture of MJ where he looks very quasi-Planet of the Apes and the caption read: "Ape Shall Not Kill Ape."
Brutal, but at the time, he really looked like Zira.

Michael Jackson belongs in the twenty first century- on a Real Ultimate Power parody page.

Facts:

1.    Michael Jackson was a mammal.
2.    Michael Jackson hits no.1 ALL the time.
3.    The purpose of Michael Jackson is to flip out and smash cars, then turn into a panther.

If you don't believe that Michael Jackson has REAL Ultimate Power you better get a life right now or he will release a forty minute video!!! It's an easy choice, if you ask me.

Tom Millar (Millar), Sunday, 8 December 2002 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, and thirty nine minutes of it will be him grabbing his crotch...and the last 60 seconds will be something even more disturbing.
