"Satan, Satan, give me a dollar."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

does this mean P Diddy gets a free ride re: samples?

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

That's really admirable, actually. I was just thinking why someone like Warren Buffett still works; what could he get with more money that he can't get now?

Obviously GM is no Buffett in the bank account department, but he's still ridiculously loaded, and I'm sure he makes more in a week off "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go"/"Faith" royalties than in a year from his new stuff.

anode (anode), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't be so sure. His new single's at #4 in the charts, and surely his new album is a shoo-in for #1?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like we'll never see that 50 Cent/George Michael collaboration

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Based on his attitude toward the future, the music, and his role in both, he's now my favorite pop star.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

How the hell is it up to him to give away the music?

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he's referring to any music he makes from this point on...

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Likelihood of increasing his fanbase this way: 0.0%

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Wrong. I have now decided he is great.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

you've gotta give for what you take

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Must be nice to have faith.

I still think post '98 George is a massive dud.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently his new album features a cover of The One's fantastic "Flawless". This will either be the greatest thing ever or totally shit.

FWIW, "Amazing" sounds great to these ears, so my money is on "great".

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm vaguely concerned his free music will be of the sort of standard Prince's recent music is.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i love george. he is the greatest.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

in what way? cos when you think about it a bit more...he's not.

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yes he is. i'm thinking about it in terms of "i saw ten george michael videos on c4 last night and he is a great musician and pop star who has some really cool videos"

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's uptempo and it's George, it is good. There have been no exceptions to this rule (and downtempo isn't necessarily bad, either).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Time for you to stand and be counted, Anthony M.:

George Michael's "Faith" vs. Limp Bizkit's "Faith."

Choose WISELY.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

ha!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm counting on you to answer this CORRECTLY anthony.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael's. duh. But I like the Limp Bizkit one. Until "Behind Blue Eyes" I thought Fred had great taste in covers. They used to do "Straight Up" live!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

good. i don't have to kick you out of the band.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone who had the misfortune of seeing them mentioned that they did Ministry's "Thieves" live. I can imagine the band doing it, but Durst being that kind of non-fratboy aggro?

anode (anode), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I will pay big money to hear the version of "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" they were planning for the last album until they decided to do "Behind Blue Eyes." They were also planning a cover of some Love And Rockets number (not "So Alive"). Goddamn do I need to become their archivist.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I generally like George Michael, but this early retirement thing seems to be setting a poor example in this ageing and pension-impoverished society.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been struck by how I like the way he sings the word 'Amazing'.

the bellefox, Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

genius, legend, whatever, it's all good.

'older'/'listen without prejudice'/'faith' = classics all. it's as simple as that. okay the PEPSI thing (circa 87) i could do without but aside from that what's not to like?

piscesboy, Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i too have rewnewfound respect for Georgey although i don't really like this new single from what i've heard...and his greatest moment remains 'Wham Rap!'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly, it must be reported that "Patience" is as rubbish as you'd fear. "Amazing" is the highlight by far.

OK: "Cars And Trains", where he at least tries to get funky at the end, except he seems to have forgotten how. "Precious Box" has a bit of life in it, but at 7:35 it's far too long.

He also takes the fun rap bit out of "Flawless", talks over it lots and extends it to seven whole minutes. Why? It sounds basically the same, but WITHOUT THE RAP!

Basically, I listened to it on repeat a few times, and there were so many slow, dull ones, I was actually looking forward to Shoot The Dog. Oh, and you'd think he would have gotten all that proper singing out of him on that covers album, but no, it's back. Ugh.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 14 March 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Shame -- "Outside" and "Fast Love" among best pop singles evah. Anything like that?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Sunday, 14 March 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, but...

What's white and slides down a toilet wall?

Sasha (sgh), Sunday, 14 March 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck, "Cars And Trains" is the closest thing to "Fastlove" on there. It's an AWFUL lot of slow ones. Hard to know which is worst, but "American Angel" seemed particularly gloopy and hookless.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 14 March 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Very very grateful to Yiorgos Panayiotou for *telling me* about this future undertakinng of his, otherwise how please tell me *how* would i know? This is very important; someone, HOW WOULD I KNOW?
