I have a friend who is from Kingston. Last night she was telling me about how she missed jerky vendors on the side of the road.

yeah, thanks..haha. and while I have nothing against Dan Akroyd or the Tragically Hip (well, i do but that's another post) i guess i should clarify that by Kingston i'm talking about Jamaica rather than Ontario.

Places like Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios are touristy, not Kingston.
But if you're white and have always wanted to be on the other end of racial hatred, then by all means go there.

That's what I've heard, anyway. I've been only to the aforementioned touristy sports. Maybe I'm unfairly giving it a bad name.

I used to work with a guy from Kingstone, Trenchtown specifically, and he said it made his neighborhood in Detroit seem placid.

well, my neighborhood in Detroit wasn't all that bad, so maybe i'll have good luck in kingston ;)

When we were in Jamaica they told us don't go to Kingston. Because it might not be safe for us. I don't imagine there would be anything for a tourist to do there.

yeah, i'm actually looking for the antithesis of tourism but kinda hoping i can find a trusty guide.

I haven't been to Kingston but I've been to the usual places: Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril, and they were quite intense in many ways, also very sketchy and nerve-wracking. Jamaica is intense all around, there's nothing subtle about it. I would advise you to travel about with a Jamacian you trust and not by yourself. 500 years of oppression and tragedy does not make Jamaicans fond of whitey. Also, because of your skin color, you're a mark for hustlers--even if you're a poor American, you have more money than anyone else around, trust me--and the hustlers are extremely aggressive in JA.

Yes. As soon as I left my safe, friendly compound in Ocho Rios, I was accosted by heroin dealers and hustlers. Be very careful.

Wondering how long before someone posts "Safe European Home" lyrics...

"i guess i should clarify that by Kingston i'm talking about Jamaica rather than Ontario."

Are you sure you wouldn't like to consider the many attractions that Kingston upon Thames has to offer?

An American tourist going to Jamacia and visiting Kingston is analagous to a German tourist who wants to see Universal Studios and winds up in Compton.
