direct order from D.S..
"what song from your childhood or some other distant time has re-entered
your life as a recent favorite, making your life seem to follow some
sort of karmic plan"

or something...

I can think of a few...Stepping Out by Joe Jackson, which I play at the
very end of many of my parties now.

"new girl now"-honeymoon suite
"you can do magic"-america
"reminiscing"-little river band

...as most anyone who has seen/heard me Dj can attest

"That's All" by Genesis. I remember this being the first song I ever heard on the first walkman I ever owned, being played on the radio. And I heard it recently again, and found myself strangely moved. As much as I hate Collins, I really think this is a nice, melancholic song.

"Stepping Out" indeed. Those descending high-pitched bells toward the end are pure bliss. They totally transport me back to riding shotgun in my parents car with the AM radio on the pop station. I actually bought a vinyl copy of Night & Day for a buck last year. Decent record.

"Reminiscing" & "You Can Do Magic" are good choices. The Honeymoon Suite cut is cool, but I was a lot more conscious when that came out.

Also "Ah!Leah!" by Donnie Iris.

The first time I ever heard "Emerge", with that fading-in synth bottom, I was in a club and at first I thought the DJ had put on "Steppin' Out".

suburban boy by dave warners from the suburbs had reentered my life and told me i am now comfortable being an uncultured larrikin with no chance of scoring a chick.

"Wordy Rappinghood" by Tom Tom Club.

Whenever I hear it - and I've been listening to it a lot recently - I am transported back to my nine year old self at a fairground in the Scottish Borders, just about to leave and walk home.

The events surrounding this memory are completely mundane. I wish I could figure out why that song has such a powerful hold on me. Hope I wasn't bumraped by a gypsy.

"Bumraped by a Gypsy" is the title of my forthcoming one man monologue show, incidentally.

I've been downloading a lot of records that were in the charts when I was 7 or 8, trying to work out which ones I remember and which I don't. I do mean to write about it but it's such a fragile, gauzy experience that it's quite difficult.

(aka who needs Boards Of Canada when you've got Bad Manners?)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 11 March 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

ah, bad manners... they wanted to work with lee perry, but supposedly he wouldn't do it unless they change their name to 'good' manners!
