astroblaster (astroblaster), Thursday, 11 March 2004 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I recommend acquiring or DLing the soundtrack to the film "The Boxer", which is very beautiful, composed by ex-Virgin Pruner Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 11 March 2004 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I find the album 'Keep it Like a Secret' by Built to Spill uplifting. I don't know why. What else...

Jaromil (Jaromil), Thursday, 11 March 2004 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The Clientele: Suburban Light

Jez (Jez), Thursday, 11 March 2004 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Sixpence None the Richer are creepy fundamentalilst Christians, so I don't consider them "beautiful" or "uplifting" at all, but rather blinded by faith and utterly depressing. Moreover, they should be flogged to death with their own sawed off limbs for misappropriating that La's single.

Seek ye This Mortal Coil instead.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Are SNTR really fundies? Or is the word just a convenient tag for any Christian in a band who dares mention their religion? ;)

Ummm - beautiful music - ABBA's "Like An Angel Passing Through My Room" seems to fit with the stuff suggested so far.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Her Words Hang In The Air, by The Ladybug Transistor.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Modest Mouse "Float On". Beautiful and funky.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Are Sixpence big Christians? Not that it matters, I'm just curious. Someone told me that.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 11 March 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Cousteau - The Last good day of the year

eleki-san (eleki-san), Thursday, 11 March 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

thea - yes. their name is phrase from the writings of CS Lewis. something about a father giving his kid money which the kid then gives back to the dad on his birthday. the dad is then sixpence none the richer.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Are they any decent bands that are "big Christians" (or "big ____ (insert any religion here)).
Johnny Cash was quite religious, but those beliefs are usually considered separately from his music (except for the gospel songs, of course). So, there's Johnny Cash the badass, and there's also Johnny Cash the Christian, and they are basically irreconcilable.
On the other hand, there is only Creed the turgid Pearl Jam wannabe bible-thumping assholes.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick Drake - "Northern Sky"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 11 March 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I've lately been digging my old cheesy trance rekkids: Chakra - Home (Above & Beyond mix) is worth a listen: "You're not alone... I've come to take you home" (with minor chord progressions rather than uberschlock major chord progressions.)

Otherwise:
Jakob - The Diffusion of our Inherent Situation (could someone download this and tell me what you think - hey look at that, they're playing in Chicago in July. I love it when wicked NZ music that's not of the Dunedin mould makes it overseas...)

The For Carnation - Moonbeams (sparse spacious guitarness)
HDU - A Moment From Different Angles
Gentle People - Journey (Aphex Twin remix)
Yagya - Snowflake 6
Mogwai - 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong, Christmas Steps

damian_nz (damian_nz), Thursday, 11 March 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, that HDU track is /actually/ called A Copy of Yourself.

damian_nz (damian_nz), Thursday, 11 March 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Stars of the Lid, The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid. Mmmmmm, droney bliss.
