I heard a few great tunes...disn't catch the names though

sej, Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Goat is usually considered the best. I reckon Liar has the best tunes though and it's more full-on. "Boilermaker", "Rope", "Slave ship", "The art of self defense"...

I'm going to recommend Shot, their major label debut, cos I know no-one else will

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I second Liar. I have three of their albums in my car, and that one gets the most airtime for sure :)

pete from the street, Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

goat. it's just great. liar is also mighty fine.

simon 803 (simon 803), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

definitely Goat. then proceed to scratch acid.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say it's pretty hard to go wrong with the Jesus Lizard. I even quite like the otherwise largely maligned Bang, the singles/odds'n'sodds collection (notably for the previously vinyl-only Chrome medley) and the end-of-the-line Andy Gill-produced ep (notably for "Cold Water").

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Bang is maligned?? B-but..."Wheelchair Epidemic!!!"

and "Mouth Breather!"

I think that's a great place for Sej to start...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I heard Shot a couple of weeks ago in a bar and I was surprised by how good it was - another case of a record not getting a fair shake from indie fuxxx because of the company that released it, I think. As to Bang, it's completely great, who maligned it and what time do they want their punch in the nose?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

the one with the horse on the cover

kephm, Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Goat, for sure. Cheers to Ned's AMG review, the last sentence in particular.

rainman (rainman), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Goat or Liar, tow of the best albums EVER

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Cripes, I had forgotten I had written that review!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It reminded me of my reaction upon hearing that record for the first time ("This music is evil, but it's fun evil").

rainman (rainman), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Though not as good as either Goat and Liar, Down definitely has its merits.

Philippe (Philippe), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been wanting to ask this same thing lately, as I'm becoming a monstrous fan of Duane Denison's work (via Tomahawk) and have never once been exposed to this group.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, my dear Nickalicious, you have missed out. Refer to the recommendations above and imagine if you will a scene in my 1993 memory where during an onstage performance Denison plays this extremely sleazy-but-tightly-wired guitar riff as a cue for lead singer David Yow to strip and nearly let it all hang out in the fashion of a drunk street crazy with feral intelligence at work. (This is all a positive.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Another vote for Goat & Liar. Start with either, and if you like it, you'll want to get the other.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 11 March 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah nick, if you like Duane based on Tomahawk imagine it's like you're going to hear Led Zeppelin after getting into Jimmy Page via his work in The Firm!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 11 March 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't like Down. But their live-at-CBGB album (forget the name) is pretty sick.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 11 March 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Goat. Its the scariest. Liar is obviously right there with Goat. I liked "Fly On The Wall" from Down but I can't really remember the rest of that record. They were also ALWAYS playing live somewhere. And their live shows were legendary to say the least.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 11 March 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Head is great too! But Pure ain't so hot(the drum machine sounds kinda bad). And Blue is the one i probably listened to the least. Definitely one of my fave bands of the 90's. A zillion years ago i read somewhere where Yow said he wasn't gonna put the lyrics in with the records cuz he didn't think it mattered(and they hadn't included them on whatever album was out at the time). So when they came to the Khyber in Philly i told him he was crazy cuz he was such a great songwriter and they deserved to be in there. Well, the next records had them, so I'd like to single-handedly take credit for that. I mean this is the man who wrote "Crazy Dan"!! (i think he out-nick caved nick cave in his prime)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 March 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The only record I ever go back to is Liar. I never quite got what was so great about Goat or the rest of the Jesus Lizard catalog...

no releases match seeing David Yow/Jesus Lizard live though... YOW! (pun intended).

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 11 March 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah seeing the lizard when i was 16 or so [ah sneaking in bars] scarred me something awful

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 March 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

That said, the first fraction of a second of Liar alone makes it a more worthwhile rock record than many that were released at the time.

*silence as you start the CD player or put the needle on sound one*

UNH! *ROCKROCKROCK*

The subsequent whiplash from the start of "Boilermaker" alone could kill old people.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i just realized scott and i might have been at the same show

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Are there any better lyrics than "Don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy, I like him just fine .... but he's a mouthbreather"

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(yo, broheems, confidiential.. do you get my email, and did you grab what you needed to grab?)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

haha there can't be!

I love goat.

x-post

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Slight digression.. how many of you guys remember Phleg Camp? I listened to that "Ya 'Red Fair Scratch" CD of theirs moreso than any Lizard. Not sure why.. it was certainly more sluggish and backwaters sounding, and certainly was inspired by the Jesus Lizard.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(DB- Indeed I did! Thanks much; I just haven't had a chance to fuck around with them yet, and thank you properly.)

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

(ok good, so I can delete them now... just wanted to know.. fool around with them whenever you have time)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

IS THIS SOMETHING YOU CAN SHARE WITH THE CLASS, MR. BITCH AND MR. BROHEEMS?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll be back in 20 mins

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The Jesus Lizard album that would make a good introduction is the live record "Show". It has a great set list, sounds good and is a glimpse into what they were like live. You probably could find it for a buck or two in some big media horde's used bin.

Other than "Blue", "Head/Pure" or the Jetset ep, I don't think you could go wrong with any of their records as a first one to check out. All of them are worth hearing.

All three times I saw the Jesus Lizard, they were playing with another great band (GvB, Six Finger Satillite, & The Cows).

earlnash, Friday, 12 March 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Are there any better lyrics than "Don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy, I like him just fine .... but he's a mouthbreather"

What's even better is when you know who the song was written about.

hstencil, Friday, 12 March 2004 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Spill the beans! (if you're allowed to)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 12 March 2004 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

surprised you don't know the story, db. Allegedly, the song's about Britt Walford. Supposedly he was house-sitting for Albini ("I leave my home/ I leave for a couple weeks...") and while Blinky was gone, the toilet overflowed. Instead of handling the problem, Britt nailed the door to the bathroom shut. I've heard the story from a couple of sources, but definitely fifth-hand, so I'm not sure that I trust it (esp. since, some years later, I went to a party at Britt's one-time house in Louisville that he did most of the restoration work on).

hstencil, Friday, 12 March 2004 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It is a great story and set of lyrics, not least because they can be applied to destructive fuckstick housemates the world over.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 12 March 2004 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm tickled by the idea of Blinky as a nickname for S.A.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"God, whoever fucking invented the hi-hat is a fucking tool of Satan"

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The singles comp is also excellent. What a great band.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

No no, stence, I've DEFINITELY heard about the story Walford and the overflowed toilet into Albini's basement and the ensuing shit all over the record room and all that. I just never made a connection between the Jesus Lizard song lyrics and that incident.. or I just plain forgot.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(also, could the Blinky reference have something to do with the red track suit uniforms of Electrical Audio?)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

the Blinky nickname is from before Electrical even existed.
