DDR Rock - search-destroy

Apparently rock music is a natural development of the kind of proletarian folk culture that had long flourished in East Germany.

Has anyone heard any DDR rock? The only band I've heard of are Die Puhdys. They have mullets.

[insert joke about Dance-Dance-Revolution here]

DV "Kingdom of Rock" is a Para Para Paradise song not a DDR song, silly.

I have no clue as to the OTHER DDR rock but I wd be interested in finding out. Will you tell us some more about Die Puhdys?

there is a picture of them in a book I have about Berlin. They look very mullety, and are performing onstage with an inflatable thing that looks like it escaped from a Pink Floyd set.

Search: Nina Hagen as adorable-but-weird nice girl singing sensation
Destroy: Karat, Puhdys

I thought this was going to be about Dance Dance Revolution, and now I'm disappointed. :(

Search: L'Amigamore, a compliation of DDR rock from the mid-60's on, I'm pretty sure, Rough Trade Germany. (Can't remember any band names, though.)
Pretty entertaining, but mostly on a campy level.

I'm listening to a CD called "Kosmos - Soundtracks of Eastern Germany's Adventures in Space" right now and it's not half bad. Very psychedelic.

dance dance revolution may be the best live band in the world right now.

I've been listening to "Das Beste Aus Der DDR". Does that Kosmos record have the "Hallo Erde, Hier Ist Alpha" track by Berluc? It is enjoyable.

However, I am overall not convinced that the DDR's ostrock represented a viable road not travelled for pop music.

I like this little fellow:

Starry - I bought a PUHDYS record from a man in a market for one euro. I think it is DIE PUHDYS FAHRT ELEKTRONIK, as some kind of Ost-Rock answer to Kraftwerk. However I have not listened to it yet, and am sure it will be total rubbish.

ten months pass...
since my recent trip to Berlin I have been enjoying a record by Oktoberclub. This seems to be officially sanctioned East German folk-rock from the late '60s and early '70s.

It turns out that the little fellow in the picture above is Pitti Platsch. That CD is full of great stuff, if you ever see it, purchase. The other volumes in the series are the suck, though.
