"rich girl" by hall & oates

I love the opening best. the piano plunks and the "she's a rich girl and she's gone to far and you know it doesn't matter anyway" bit. Has anybody looped this for a hip hop track yet? It reminds me of the annie & oliver bits Jay-Z grabbed for "Hard Knock Life", or maybe a biz markie/cool v loop circa "just a friend". the rest of the song i can take or leave but that broadway/billy joel/am radio opening bit... yikes.

BRANEATER!!!

i also love the "you can rely on your old man's money, you can rely on your old man's money" line, just the way they sing it.

it's kind of more melancholy than you'd expect from a "rich girl" song. a lot of these type songs like "play with fire" by the stones or "little bitch" by the specials, they're so fucking vindictive. there should be more self-loathing "rich guy" songs by guys like the zombies' "who's your daddy? is he rich like me" instead of all these "rich girls suck" songs.

It reminds me of the annie & oliver bits Jay-Z grabbed for "Hard Knock Life",

& "Anything", I meant. re: the oliver! bit.

Isn't it about "Patty Hearst"? Anyway, s'definitely one of the more overlooked Hall and Oates singles, especially when they turn the buttons up for "Don't you know?", they get so much done in under three minutes with this track. It's a mini-epic.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

no way! i never heard that patty hearst thing, that's cool.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

woooh here she comes,
watch out boys she's chewed it up

wooh here she comes
she's a bran eater

Your search - "rich girl" + "hall and oates" + "patty hearst" - did not match any documents.

Suggestions:
- Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
- Try different keywords.

fritz as if preemporty answer to yr query, the young gunz have already provided you with a rap version of "rich girl", including sample

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i have no idea what "preemporty" means, but next time i wont try to be clever on one cup of coffee

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks! I knew somebody must have done it! how is it?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I hallucinated that Hearst story...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

no matter, the Hearst backstory improves the song. preemportorially speaking, of course.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the sample is pretty much the best thing about it.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, this song does melt babies in it's sheer rocktastic funk vibes.

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The Young Gunz album is hot.

djdee2005, Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

oh it's trash.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"dude, hating on the gunnerz? dude..."

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Well "hot" is an overstatement but its certainly not trash.

The single and "Friday Night" are 9/10s

djdee2005, Thursday, 11 March 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

the non sample bits of the '$$ girlz' are brilliant

prima fassy (mwah), Thursday, 11 March 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

tow down sampled it first!!

$$, Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the tow down song, i think i might have put it on the cd i made you. when i first heard the young gunz song i couldn't remember where i had heard that sample before.

William Wiggins, Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

If this encourages a new generation of music fans to pick up a Hall and Oates CD, I can only say that I whole-heartedly approve.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Nina Simone's version.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)
