London music scene for paupers?

A friend of mine's playing a couple of gigs in London and is there for a few weeks looking to catch what music he can (his stuff is a bit Tom McRae-ish singer-songwriter style)in pubs and other inexpensive spots around town. Can anyone suggest places to go? He himself is playing at the Bedford in Balham and some club in Ladbroke Grove.

He's also going to Ireland, so if you can give advice on Dublin and/or Belfast, that'd be grand, as well.

He's staying in Acton...is there anything over that way, by any chance?

I saw Calla at The Water Rats in Gray's Inn Road, it was one of the best gigs I've ever seen, and it cost me a fiver.

The Spitz on Commercial Street has a lot of very eclectic stuff on for cheap, if you ignore their high bar prices. I saw The Czars and David Grubbs there, and if you're into klezmer they have that too.

The Arts Cafe, further down Commercial Street, is also great value.

This is great, thanks. Steve's a teetotaller, so he won't mind the drink prices!

The RoTa club, Saturdays 4-8pm at the Notting Hill Arts Club, is free - I'm not sure it's got a consistent genre (last few times I've been have been mathrock), and the bands can be pretty patchy, but it's got sofas.

Nice. I thought that was just a dj venue for some reason. I like it there, sofas and all, though I haven't been there in many years.

The Silver Springs are playing tomorrow's RoTa, which I reckon will be worth popping along to.

Hot Chip are playing RoTa tomorrow as well, and they're fucking brilliant - they look like a drunk, homeless Kraftwerk, and sound like The Beta Band & Funkadelic wrestling their way down a lift shaft.

Wow. I hope Hot Chip makes it to LA soon.

Saw Hot Chip at the Spitz last week and I think it wasn't their best show but enjoyed it greatly so thank you CharlieNo4 for the....hot tip.
