The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 11 March 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

im really into his version of "kissing a fool".

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 11 March 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

HuckleBuck OTM.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 March 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of his songs are piss, but some are pretty good. convince me otherwise.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 11 March 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

he was the first winner of Canadian Idol, y'know. Sort of.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

And he covers Frontin' on his new single.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that would be English midget "jazz' singer Jamie Cullum, not Canadian smoothie "jazz' singer Michael Buble.
Then again, you're right, whats the difference....

David Nolan (David N.), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

o got my mom his cd for mothers day last years.
it was gay.....she liked it though

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Friday, 12 March 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I spent several moments recently wondering whether Jamie Cullum is to jazz what Jamie Oliver is to cooking.

Then I realised that I was being ridiculous - I'm sure Jamie Oliver knows exactly what cooking is.

Really, the only thing the two of them have in common (apart from their first name, obviously) is that they both seem to provoke in me an almost overwhelming desire to smash them repeatedly in the face with a cricket bat.

With a breeze block nailed to it.

And covered in large shards of broken glass

Which is covered in rotting excrement.

And on fire.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 12 March 2004 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that all?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 12 March 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Is that all?"

Sorry - I missed the bit about throwing their still-twitching corpses to a pack of ravening lions when I'd finished.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously though, what is the musical difference between Bublé and Cullum?

JoB (JoB), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Buble's a lot more... lounge. I think that's the big difference, Buble obviously comes from a Stateside tradition of the big personality lounge singer, Dean and Frank and Sammy. Of course, he's not really got the personality to carry it off properly (qf: Andy Williams, Harry Connick Jr), so it falls flat. Cullum is a lot more reserved, a lot more British, a lot more "let the music speak for itself".

This could be the thread for me to unveil my great "lounge and hip-hop are the same genre" theory that I keep meaning to turn into an article, but maybe not.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw much of the recent Southbank Show special on Cullum and expected to hate him as much as I hate his music. But he was quite likeable and self-deprecating and seemed to understand exactly why so many people hate him and his music, and even to feel somewhat ambivalent about his success and how it would affect his music.

So now, when I hear his music - which I still hate - I feel slightly conflicted and almost guilty for hating it, seeing as he's such a nice bloke. Even if he is a midget with an abnormally large head...

Isn't Buble an "actor" too?

David Nolan (David N.), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Does *anyone* like Katie Melua?

pete s, Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Seemingly 95% of Britain.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i really liked his cover of 'you'll never find another love like mine'. it seemed fantastically heartfelt.

piscesx, Thursday, 22 October 2009 01:09 (sixteen years ago)

The people who buy Michael Bublé, in addition to being chronically unable to pronounce his last name correctly, frequently get angry if you have anything less than totally uncritical praise for his music. "Don't you think he has a great voice? DON'T YOU?!?! WHY DON'T YOU? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?"

I can't ever see this guy's name without recalling, with horror, his damned live DVD that the store I used to work in played over and over, and which included, I shit you not, a Maroon 5 cover.

Thanks, thread bump!
