is this rumor true? If so, my interest in Wilco (previously non-existent) has increased substantially....

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 11 March 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!?!?!?!?!!?!!!

This would be a very appealing development.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 March 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

He IS definitely in their touring lineup!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 March 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so torn on this whole Bonnaroo thing. On one hand A) no hip-hop this year, and B) The Dead, on the other hand A) Wilco ft. Nels Cline, B) David Byrne, C) Willie Nelson, D) etc.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 March 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Nels Cline in Wilco would be fucked up, I would hope he wouldn't be too polite about it.

Apparently no Lil' Rascals Brass Band at Bonnaroo this time, but the Bad Plus will be there. I don't know, my hippiephobia makes me wary of these sorts of things.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

there are only two Wilco songs that ever connected with me, "I Must Be High" and "Misunderstood" (the latter of which is lifted from some Laughner song, anyway, right...?) There's something that's just kinda too middle-of-the-road about most of their stuff for me. Nels, however, has always impressed me with his pyrotechnics. Middle-of-the-road he ain't, so I hope whatever contributions he makes are of the fucked up and crazy variety, cuz that's what Wilco needs as far as my ears are concerned.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

now they just need to get carla to sing. i hope nels makes a lot of money.

dan (dan), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Somebody needs to napalm that fucking Bonnaroo festival. The same company books like every worthless jam band in New Orleans, especially during Jazz Fest. It's awful.

I'm kind of shocked by the Nels Cline news--like working with Carla Bozulich wasn't MOR enough.

adam (adam), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

you think Carla's goth moaning/screeching is MOR???

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

His work with Carla is awesome.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

True poetic justice would be him giving them real "experimentalism" instead of that magical mystery crap on their last one, then all the critics who were up on them deciding to jock them because they've "lost their musicality"!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree Adam, but at least they put the Rascals on a dvd!

Downtown does seem to be jam central during Jazz Fest, but at least there's a lot of other good stuff going on too. I think I'll be there the first weekend this year.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I still think summerteeth is a more interesting and experimental record than YHF, but some of the stuff they were playing live on the YHF tours certainly would lend itself to Cline's noise.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, good call Dan. I have to admit that Scarnella hasn't impressed me but I still remember the goddamn spectacular job Nels did playing with Mike Watt -- they were touring the Contemplating the Engine Room album with the basic three-guy lineup that recorded the album and Jesus Christ, the version of "Liberty Calls" they played that night...amazing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

His work with Carla is awesome.

Geraldine Fibbers yes, Scarnella eh...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the Contemplating the Engine Room album

oh MAN was that a great record.

xpost: agree completely re Fibbers.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The Geraldine Fibbers were like every Americana and grrl cliche boiled down into one crappy No Depression Kill Rock Stars wet dream. I've only heard the Red-Headed Stranger thing re: her solo work but it didn't make much of an impression.

Jordan--I've never even seen a Lil Rascals BB DVD--when did this happen? The visual aspect does a lot for brass bands.

adam (adam), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Which day(s) are you hitting up Jazzfest?

adam (adam), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The Geraldine Fibbers were like every Americana and grrl cliche boiled down into one crappy No Depression Kill Rock Stars wet dream.

Well, them over Uncle Tupelo if nothing else, which perhaps brings this all full circle...

Then again, my fave Carla era remains Ethyl Meatplow -- saw 'em three times live, they were great!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

adam--it's too bad that you never saw the fibbers live, either with or without nels. then you wouldn't be embarrassing yourself.

dan (dan), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Adam, I think they just have one tune on the Bonnaroo comp. I think it's the dvd and not the cd, but I could be wrong. Rebirth is coming out with a dvd of the 20th anniversary shows that they did at Tip's last summer though.

I think I'm going to be in town April 23rd-25th. I don't know which days I'm going to actually hit the Jazz Fest grounds, depends on our gig schedule, but it looks like all the good shit is that first weekend.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Nels Cline alot...I wonder if this signifys a noisy new direction for Wilco? Hope so.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Scarnella r00led my summer of '99 so much.

You've obviously never seen them play live. Their noise freak outs have managed to scare more yuppies then affirmitive action.

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I was a bit underwhelmed by Scarnella the one time I saw them. Maybe they suffered in comparison to the Cline/Bendian "Interstellar Space Revisited" tribute, who also played the same evening. But, I think my favorite Cline shows remain the times I saw him play with his Trio, back in '96 or so.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The night I saw them live was opening for Labradford (wonderful) and Godspeed You Sleep-Inducing Motherfuckers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

that's godspeed you white improvisors

duke it up, Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad to hear about this because I didn't think Wilco's live show was really cutting it with only four members. With so much going on in the album versions of songs, they just couldn't flesh them out live like they needed to be.

I did see Geraldine Fibbers with Cline and they certainly had a lot more energy than Wilco has had the last two times I've seen them.

No, I've seen them a couple of times, and they do get pretty noisy - not crazy scary noisy but good -- I guess I was wondering about the direction of the new album more.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 11 March 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I adore Nels Cline in nearly everything he's been involved in, never much gave a damn about Wilco either way, although I was happy when they had Carla and Nels open for them on tour last year and get some exposure. this is an interesting development, if true. but then, I didn't buy the last Blue Man Group album just because they had Nels play on it, so I probably won't buy the next Wilco album just for him either.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 11 March 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey andrew, you left out that last part:

Everybody: Cowbell.

boldbury, Thursday, 11 March 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing too is that his presence transformed the whole fibbers sound, so we can hope the same for wilco!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 11 March 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

adam--it's too bad that you never saw the fibbers live, either with or without nels. then you wouldn't be embarrassing yourself.

That's funny. I don't feel embarrassed. Ned has a point re: Uncle Tupelo though. Also as long as I'm being dickish the Geraldine Fibbers had really ugly album covers.

adam (adam), Thursday, 11 March 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Nels addresses his joining Wilco (and gently implies that he's at least partly in it for the money):

one year passes...
I heard the new Wilco live album in the background of a get together tonight. The title track "Kicking Television" sounds like a wacky Replacements song like Tommy Gets His Tonsils out with Robert Quine playing lead guitar. I thought it sounded pretty good.

i hope you're not including the butch cover, because i took it as a compliment when someone told me i looked like carla. :-(

only one song into this, but damn, cline's solo on ashes of american flags! so nice.

This double solo by Cline and Derek Trucks is fire. They should do an album together, very different players but obviously they can complement each other.
