Search And Destroy: Backstreet Boys

Surely I've clarified the format enough by now. Remember, you have to have a S if you want a D, and vice versa. And one thing each only. And music-related.

Off you go....

Search: singles. Destroy: albums. POP.

(Yes, I know I'm not obeying the rules.)

Greg, Wednesday, 14 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: the one with the video in the space-ship is actually quite banging. Yeah sorry no titles. Destroy: that god-awful ballad about "the lonuuuhlaay people and the broken-hearted", if i remember correctly.

Omar, Wednesday, 14 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: "The Call" (because POP is NOW and vice versa) Destroy: "As Long As You Love Me" (cloying nappy ballad)

Search...*thinks*...well, while You-Know-What is the song that we're all supposed to like and therefore is seen as needing to be avoided, I'll stick with it. "I Want It That Way" is just charming, is all. But "Larger Than Life" has a certain robot sheen to it that matches the album cover.

Destroy -- "Shape of My Heart" C'mon, when I first heard of it I read initial comparisons of this song to Sting. Did that not raise warning flags to anyone else? ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: the recent singles

Destroy: the early singles

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 14 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: Larger Than Life Destroy: Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely

Ally, Wednesday, 14 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom, you should change the FT Tagline.... no pop élitist would ever even consider the idea of listening to Backstreet Boys... Thus:

Search: ah ah ah, you must be joking (pretty much every single they put out sounds great the first time you hear it, boring by the third and when the fourth comes you're already wondering why you trusted those kids in the first place)

Destroy: everything (past, present and I bet even future)

Simone, Wednesday, 14 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: "I Want It That Way", "Larger Than Life", "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)", "Shape Of My Heart" (Ned, you should have believed my comparison to Abba, which I meant as a massive compliment). Destroy: "All I Have To Give", "Anywhere For You" and, indeed, most of their early period.

Big Pimpin' With The Cutwater Band, Thursday, 15 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: The Bubbling remix (or whatever it's called) of "I Want It That Way". I recently discovered this and it's incredible. The vocals from the original song are filtered through this electro- reggae, low-key scratching, radio station shout-outs and various sampled yelps, shouts, squeals and quotes. It's unfathomably grand and, in the final analysis, better than the Neptune's stellar reqorking of "The Call".

Destroy: "Show Me The Meaning Of A Good Ass-Beating." Clearly that's what they were trying to say when they released this limpid pile of tripe that makes even their horrifying early singles sound good. (Failing that, Nick's voice. Oh, puberty can be SO unkind...)

Dan Perry, Thursday, 15 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
(I'm reviving this because my original answer is hilarious, but also because Tim was so OTM about "The Call" that it isn't even funny.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Brian Litrell Destroy: the other four

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)
