so i'm finally getting around to checking out bleep.com. does anybody have info on any of these albums / acts???

Coco Steel & Lovebomb
Evolution of the Groove
Tequila Slammers & The Jump Jump Generation

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(those are on warp BTW)

also this would be the place to tell me turn me on to other exciting dead-ends of history, bleep and bass era. problem is, i don't know what other labels were doing this sort of thing. i guess the sabres-related stuff would count. any sort of tips on strange early tribal house/trance would be fascinating.

early laurent g? early dave angel??

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

for example, any info on the sabrettes label would be appreciated. i finally tracked down the inky blacknuss "drumulator" single and was NOT disappointed! especially because the non andrea parker bits were much better than the andrea parker bits.

someone PLEASE tell me about the Coco Steel CD. it looks fantastic but $1.35/track is seems sort of steep for mp3s.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

NO new answers?? i know somebody's heard this stuff!

vahid (vahid), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Vahid,

I have heard Coco Steel and the Tequila Slammers, but so long ago I can't recall anything beyond their existence.

I love the Sweet Exorcist Testone 12". I can tell you that much.

How did you find the Android Architect?

paul c (paul c), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't listened to it yet!

i broke down and bought the coco steel cd. sounds a lot like the very old, very housey orb tracks you'll hear mixed with old nightmares on wax. spacious and elegent but not really bleepy :-(

vahid (vahid), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't remember coco's album but
'Feel It' is an eternal classic (and sampled by goldie on one of hsi rufige cru trax)

no need to mention lfo or nightmares on wax presumably but

you'll be wanting the CCCD full length by sweet exorcist, it stands for clonk's coming compact disc and it kind of like a single-remixed-everywhichway-as-album deal vis a vis the 'clonk' single, some amazing stuff on there

rob gordon had a double album of his productions out several years ago
Rob Gordon Projects on Source Records

unique 3 are the dons, their album Jus Unique was great, and all the 12 inches of that time have great alternate mixes,

their label Chill had lots of other artists on, Original Clique are pretty good, the North of Watford EP

another label that did a lot of bleep was Network -- acts like Rhythmatic, early Altern 8 before they went 'ardcore, Nexus 21 who were altern-8's first incarnation, Forgemasters, Energise, XON -- loadsa great stuff

yet another bleep label was Bassic who had Ital Rockers

Ability II did a great track called 'pressure' on OUter Rhythm

D-Zone label was sort of bleep'n'breaks, a transitional sound, some good stuff

if you're in London this stuff is easy to find at Music & Video Exchange at reasonable prices, i think because a lot of copies were pressed at the time because Rave was at its height, and for some reason Bleeps not got the cachet that breakbeat hardcore has. Same with the Belgian stuff, i keep waiting for that to become revived, again those records are plentiful and reasonable verging on dirt cheap

simon r, Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember going to record shops and listening to bleep, in the days before I followed record labels. Unfortunately, this means I don't remember the labels for anything other than the Warp stuff ...

I like the CS&L album, but it's in no way bleepy (too late, you already have it). It's all pretty much like "Feel It". I think that it's still the only "conventional" house record that Warp ever released (it was certainly WAY out of sync with what they were putting out at the time).

There was a second L.F.O. (note the periods), their singles were "Brainstorm" and (damn, can't remember, and the tape that it's on is on another continent). Solid, deep bass quakes, but a little more uptempo/ravey than the Sheffield LFO. They were probably Belgian.

I've heard only one Pre-"Papua New Guinea" FSOL track, it's called "Innate" (it's damn good, of course) and it got lumped in with a lot of the bleep records, even though it has little in common with them other than the rumbling basslines that were popular on so many of the records mentioned by you and Simon.

The Evolution of the Groove comp is CLASSIC, KLASSIK, CLASSIQUE, all the best of the early Warp singles (WAP 1-10, in fact). Tequila Slammers is WAP 11-20, it was released in 1992, and it sounds like ... uh, 1992. Therefore, it hasn't held up well over the years, but that goes for a lot of stuff from 1992.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Warp bleep:

'CCEP' by Sweet Exorcist is the daddy of them all. If only people had followed their lead, we'd all be in utopia by now. It's indescribably weird and funky.

Then there's Unique 3's Jus Unique (sounded good at the time, just went back to it and some of the rappier tracks haven't aged well, but the bleepy stuff still sounds good).

The first Nightmares on Wax LP has bleep classics like Dextrous and A Case of Funk on it and still sounds great now. I say it's the best album Warp ever released. They hadn't started their slide into stoner grooves back then and were full of energy and just enough soul to balance to coldness.

The Coco Steel album is a little housey, a little rainy day England, a little classy, not very bleepy.

There's some early Warp compilations from this era which are bleeptastic. Look out for 'Evolution of the Groove'

I think I've added very little to what others have said, but anyway, that's my two cents.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I know nothing about the old stuff, as per I guess, though I try! But eh check out that tiefschwarz remix of spektrum if you want to see the (inevitable revival). Also not so sure how related it is but in my head the black strobe remix of ghostrack by tiefschwarz is sort of that style.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 13 March 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

well, the CS&L album also has some great ambient bits going for it ... the first track is a drifty 9 minute take on a john carpenter theme (or maybe it's from tron, still trying to place it exactly). there's a few tracks in the midsection that are up there with "spanish castles in space".

having listened to the album several times over the last 24hrs i'll venture to call it classic!! the second cut in particular is great: this sort of pumping microhousey rhythm made with these really quiet and synthetic-sounding drums, a percolating half-speed acid bassline (that's actually quite bleepy), and lots of half-second disco samples given the very very very heavy heavy heavy dub treatment - you can practically see them rippling out over the stereofield until they tickle your ears. it's a bit like the jedi knights would do with their samples several years later, only much more so.

i've already got cccd! but i'll definitely check "evolution of.." and that rob gordon comp. thanks all!

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 13 March 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and i forgot to mention that i recognize almost all of the samples used on CS&L from my massive trip-hop collection!! and then those samples got recycled a third time by the french house massive. i guess if you were to triangulate between air (premiers symptomes only), motorbass and the orb you'd pretty much have the vibe here.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 13 March 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Finnily enough I was also reminded of early St Etienne at times on that record. 'Feel It' is such a classy track.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 13 March 2004 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

...and if you can handle a little bit of jazzy tinkliness with your bleep 'n bass, then:
"Join The Future" - Tuff Little Unit (Warp).
(Playing it now; never tire of it.)

Found this today. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Tim F, Saturday, 3 August 2013 08:07 (twelve years ago)

I want that! Haven't seen it for less than £20.. It's been on my list for 13 years or so..

Report back, if you wouldn't mind?

mmmm, Saturday, 3 August 2013 10:45 (twelve years ago)

yeah please

the late great, Saturday, 3 August 2013 17:12 (twelve years ago)

excellent, duh.

Tim F, Sunday, 4 August 2013 10:40 (twelve years ago)

Although it covers a relatively broad time range (1991 to 1995) it mostly feels of a piece - perhaps not surprisingly a lot of the later material strikes me as being what an LFO album halfway between Frequencies and Advance would have sounded like.

Tim F, Sunday, 4 August 2013 10:47 (twelve years ago)

Now I just need the Sweet Exorcist and Unique 3 albums.

Tim F, Sunday, 4 August 2013 10:49 (twelve years ago)

eight years pass...

yeah, this is hitting the spot.

will check that out after work.

Sorry, but that is how I feel (Ste), Friday, 24 September 2021 10:28 (four years ago)

oh nice, I’ve been getting into this stuff a lot lately!!

brimstead, Friday, 24 September 2021 17:25 (four years ago)

also released by an ilm'r no less.
and yes, this is a cracking collection.
made me remember i have the Man Machine album on cd, and i don't think i have ever listened to it.
time to go a digging.

mark e, Friday, 24 September 2021 17:45 (four years ago)

in the same ball park is this brilliant comp.
unfortunately, the cd is a PDO pressing, and has got the dreaded rot.
thankfully i got a clean 320 rip before things got too bad.

mark e, Friday, 24 September 2021 17:49 (four years ago)

ohhh yea I LOVE the rhythmatic track that opens that comp. great stuff.

brimstead, Friday, 24 September 2021 17:55 (four years ago)

agreed.
just realised that the cd edition has more tracks than the vinyl edition.
cannot deny that the kate b track totally dominated my world for quite a while.

mark e, Friday, 24 September 2021 17:59 (four years ago)

cd is def worth it for the Paris Grey track at the end, deep moody darkness:

the late great, Saturday, 25 September 2021 16:29 (four years ago)

that Join The Future compilation is a companion to this book. i haven't read it yet but it looks excellent!

i recently found Unique 3 - Jus' Unique 2LP in the hip-hop section of a record store and grabbed it- some very nice bleeps (and tracks unavailable elsewhere) on there:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNPYTTWKIIM

one time gaffled 'em up (one time), Saturday, 25 September 2021 17:27 (four years ago)

i think my unique 3 story is featured in that book.
basically i was at downbeat in leeds, and the nighmares on wax crew were on the decks, and the unique 3 crew came in.
they came with a box of white labels of 'the theme'.
they played it.
place went absolutely mental.
so, it got played again.
place went insane.
got played again.
etc.
was quite an experience.
not read the book, but i have chatted to the author re my downbeat experiences.
eg. getting to the door only for the bouncers to not let me in cos i am white, and me explaining how i had been several times before.
after some discussion, the bloke that was in charge of the night came to the door (dj fat mark), saw it was me, and cos he knew me via the AOC crew, let me in.

mark e, Saturday, 25 September 2021 17:40 (four years ago)

i think that the author, matt, had heard re that unique 3 thing happening, and when i told him my story it just confirmed what he had heard before.

mark e, Saturday, 25 September 2021 17:41 (four years ago)

Jus' Unique is massively underrated; this one still sounds like it is being beamed in from the future - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNPYTTWKIIM

I highly recommen reading Join The Future.

Turbo jealous you got to go to Downbeat.

^^31 years old! Wild.

stirmonster, Sunday, 26 September 2021 00:23 (four years ago)

two months pass...

very well done but i find it hard to get my head round making such an authentic homage to music from 30+ years ago.

https://soundsoftheuniverse.com/product/non-stop-rhythms

stirmonster, Thursday, 16 December 2021 16:56 (four years ago)

also, there is a 3rd volume of the original bleep comp - bio rhythm.

https://www.juno.co.uk/products/bio-rhythm-3-re-indulge/844511-01/?utm_source=Juno_Plus&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=Juno_Plus&utm_content=Dusted+Down+%26%238211%3B+Various+Artists%3A+Bio+Rhythm+%28Network+Records%2C+1990%29

the cover art is a continuation of the same design used for the original editions, but the label had forgotten to credit trevor jackson.
he was not impressed.
so he contacted the powers that be, and all was resolved and he got signed up to do more design stuff for them.
