in light of the recent news of his joining Wilco's touring lineup, and the fact that there appears to be no Nels thread in the archives, have at it. to start with, search and destroy, because his catalog is so varied and dense.

my top ten albums he's played on, more or less:

1. The Nels Cline Trio - Ground
2. Nels Cline & Thurston Moore - In-Store
3. Mike Watt - Contemplating The Engine Room
4. Scarnella - self-titled
5. Destroy All Nels Cline - self-titled
6. Nels Cline & Gregg Bendian - Interstellar Space Revisited: The Music Of John Coltrane
7. Nels Cline - The Inkling
8. Carla Bozulich - Red Headed Stranger
9. The Nels Cline Singers - Instrumentals
10. The Geraldine Fibbers - Butch

Search -- as mentioned on the Nels/Wilco thread, Nels' guitar solo on a version of "Liberty Calls" done with Mike Watt on the Contemplating the Engine Room tour. Holy fuck.

Interstellar Space Revisited is fire, and all the Gregg Bendian's Interzone records are good. I kept meaning to pick up Instrumentals, but haven't.

search the "live from the bottom of the hill" fibbers promo cd on virgin.

dan (dan), Thursday, 11 March 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

search also his soloing throughout the trio's "chest", "as in life"- his homage to horace tapscott on "destroy all nels cline", and "pillow wand" the duets album with thurston moore.

destroy the "instore" album with moore though.

I only have three, all by Nels Cline Trio, I'd rank them:

1. "Chest"
2. "Ground"
3. "Sad"

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

mike, i have to disagree--the instore with moore is pure drone bliss. their styles mesh so well; i think it is really great. wish i could have seen it in person.

also will second the n.c.s. "instrumentals" album.

yeah, I love 'In-store', there are passages in there that are just startlingly fragile and beautiful. 'Pillow Wand' (which was recorded on the same day(!)) is less spontaneous, more structured, but still good.

I'm still not sure what to make of the Singers...they were good live when I saw them, but to me the album falls kind of flat, compared to the NC Trio and some of his recent ensembles (Destroy All, the Inkling, etc.).

"Liberty Calls" is good, although for my money the standout Nels moment on Engine Room is "Boiler Man". he's really amazing all over that record, though. and Ball-Hog too, for that matter, which was the first time I ever heard him, and it was immediately Nels that stood out on that record, amongst all the famous and familiar names.

Gregg Bendian's Interzone is pretty great. In much of it Nels plays a bit more chill than usual, but there are some moments where he can let it rip. I have really liked both of the Interzone cd's "Myriad" and "Requiem for Jack Kirby" that I have picked up so far.

I'd love to see that band live.

yeah, I only have Myriad, but I got to see Interzone a few years ago, around the time the Jack Kirby one was out, they're a little too fusion-y for my tastes, but still enjoyable to watch live, it was cool to see Nels and his twin brother Alex play together.

Nels made his network television debut on Letterman a couple weeks ago with Wilco!

How's the new Nels Cline Singers album?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

It's good -- I think it's about the same quality as *Instrumentals*, but I listen to this one more. No real reason, maybe I like the noise stuff better.

Those are the only two Cline albums I'm familiar with, so my question here is are there any duds? Live or on record, this guy's amazing.

JC-L (JC-L), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

what JC-L said. Giant Pin isn't very different from Instrumentals and I don't know if it's any better, but I find myself listening to it a lot more.

I wouldn't say I know of any real duds, usually even the ones that have less to reccomend them, like say the last NC Trio album Sad, are still pretty listenable if you already like what he does.

Been listening to The Veil recently, which is great.

Where can I hear that Thurston Moore thing or any other thing in the same vein? "Fragile and beautiful"

one year passes...

Found myself wondering what Cline sounded like due to a Mark Kozelek/Desertshore track that includes the line " ... but I hate Nels Cline".
