The Raunchy Young Lepers to thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Grant Hart's first post-Husker album, Intolerance, fits the mold pretty well. Self-produced, and he played pretty much everything on it, and the whole thing teeters on the brink of falling apart at all times. Especially "She Can See the Angels Coming." Kind of a minor classic, I think. My favorite post-Husker product by anyone in that band.

spittle (spittle), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the liimanarina 'spermarket' cd on drag city

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 12 March 2004 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not exactly "joyous" but Steve Reich's "Violin Phase" (I have the ECM version) has that about to fall apart/sways back together/sounds and feels GREAT feel, bigtime.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 12 March 2004 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"Laughing Stock" by Love, especially the closing 20 seconds.

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 12 March 2004 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 12 March 2004 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Are Flipper shambolic cause they play slowish? I mean, I guess the Stooges are shambolic too then.

xiu xiu

Can a band w/laptops be considered shambolic? I'm just asking.

My vote = The Clean!

(and the magical Westing by Musket and Sextant disc and the Homework and Messthetics line of comps)

No, Flipper are shambolic cos I'm thinking of "Public Flipper Ltd"

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 12 March 2004 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

And so "Metallic KO" should prob be mentioned too, really

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 12 March 2004 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

'Never been in a Riot' by the Mekons
'Paralysed' by Legendary Stardust Cowboy
One of the Joy Division live albums released last year (Preston) is totally shambolic, but hugely enjoyable.

Joe Kay (feethurt), Friday, 12 March 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I was expecting jez@boum to pop up here, I'm sure he has something interesting to say on this subject.

Everyone seems to have forgotten about Yeah Yeah Noh. It's a shame. For a few EPs at least (anthologised on "When I Am A Big Girl") they owned the world of shambolic.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 12 March 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

All of Alan Lomax's recordings of Sacred Harp Group singing sounds
'brilliantly and joyously on the brink of collapse'.

Joe Kay (feethurt), Friday, 12 March 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Prolapse to thread...

Mog, Friday, 12 March 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah Charlie ya beat me to it...

Mog, Friday, 12 March 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I recommend at least 80% of the Pavement catalog. Brilliant + joyous + brink of collapse = Pavement.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 12 March 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The best answer has to Gaz's though: The Shaggs.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 12 March 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

big star's 3rd. which is half depressingly and strung-outingly on the brink of collapse, but the other half is joyously on the same brink.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Silver Jews

kenric mcdowell, Friday, 12 March 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Almost anything on Postcard Records of Scotland - especially Josef K and early Orange Juice.

mike a, Friday, 12 March 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

also:
Rites of Spring
Kicking Giant
Red Krayola

mike a, Friday, 12 March 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

But Postcard bands weren't shambolic, they wanted to be Chic!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

True. "Heaven Sent," "Felicity," etc. = what happens when young Scotland tries to emulate Chic and gets it gloriously wrong.

mike a, Friday, 12 March 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

any recent live recordings of Lightning Bolt; Providence on Halloween & Providence in August/September 03 are all amazing.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Daniel Johnston oh my god he is the personification of shambolic!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

and shambolic electronic music?

don, Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Wire: Document and Eyewitness
Television Personalities: And Don't the Kids Just Love It

Mouse on Mars kind of rocks the shambolic electronic vote, and especially the Lithops stuff. And Connie Case's "Get Down" single.

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Saturday, 13 March 2004 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)
