They should totally sell this as a Beatles reunion.

Do even Oasis fans care anymore?

As nobody has sent an e-mail about this on the list I run yet, you might be right.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

this is like that time Nic Cage married Lisa Marie Presley

I saw young Zak playing with some totally unexceptional band on a new bands night at The Rock Garden back in the very early '80's - and I would have to say that his drumming was really quite breathtakingly average.

Now that may sound flippant or meaningless, but actually, if you think about it, it's no mean feat.

Wherever and whenever he played, a lot of people would have been paying huge amounts of attention to young Zak - and if he'd actually either been appreciably good, or appreciably bad at any time, it would have been more than enough to encourage all sorts of comparisons with his father etc. etc. etc.; which would inevitably have brought whatever band he was playing in a huge amount of publicity and media attention.

But no, Zak somehow managed to use the fact that his father had been the drummer in the most popular and successful popular music combo in the whole of time and space, to achieve total anonymity for his band.

Still, if his playing has remained as totally nondescript and unexceptional as it was then, he should at least fit in well with Oasis.

I saw him with the Who once, and he was pretty good. Not amazing perhaps, but good, though I was pretty young at the time and don't remember it very well anyway.

"My name's Noel and I play the guitar"
"My name's Bonehead and I play the bass"
"My name's Liam and I sing and play the fool"
"My name's Zak and I play the famous dad card"

piscesboy, Friday, 12 March 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Special guest vocal appearances by both Jude and Sean on the next album. Or maybe that guy from The World Party, who kinda looks like both them. Or whatever. Stay tuned!

I've seen Zak Starkey play over the years, with the lightning seeds, Johnny Mar, many other bands just for fun where he played a mean lead guitar, and of course for many years now the Who.
You sad dudes out there who know nothing about music may be surprised to learn that bands like The Who and now Oasis don't just have any old drummer smacking a limp pig skin with a pair of twigs. I would class Zak Starkey as probably the best drummer currently on the planet. But hey, don't take my word for it go and see for yourselves.

Rock Watcher, Monday, 15 March 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you think of Kayne West RW?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 15 March 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom, I don't know why you're bringing up Kanye, but I heard he sampled "Eleanor Rigby" for a song on Talib Kweli's next album, no joke!

Al (sitcom), Monday, 15 March 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Come on now, Starkey senior was hardly what you would call good himself, was he? He didn't need to be any better than average because of the guys in front of him. Oasis should stick with Terry Kirkbride, the guy who did their album who used to be in Proud Mary. He's amazing, the most inventive drummer you'll ever hear, but then he doesn't have an ex Beatle as a father...

Michael Paul, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It was either Zak Starkey or Dale Crover. Noel refused to work with anyone else

Jasper Clifford, Saturday, 10 April 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I would say that Ringo was better than average, actually. Better than Charlie Watts or Mick Avory, in my opinion.

Tim Ellison, Saturday, 10 April 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, some news on NME.com today too... "Noel's Shocking Appearance" or something equally lame...

Most shocking for me was the fact that Starkey, baby Lennon, baby Jagger and a ton of other peeps were attending a show by the Stands. Noel's TOTALLY UNEXPECTED appearance!! hahaha

RPT: TOTALLY UNEXPECTED!!

ken taylrr, Saturday, 10 April 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Dale Crover?

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 10 April 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard Zak Starkey, but it's rather unfair that he's
accused of "playing the famous dad card" just because he drums
with famous bands. I mean, sure, his name probably opens a lot of
doors for him, but what's wrong with that?

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Saturday, 10 April 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a R*bert H*lburn story for you...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 10 April 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Fucking Hell, I'd just love to see a Melvins/Oasis collaboration.. Fuck Starkey And The Dad He Rode In On.
