What a wonderful day it was, when the Buggles joined YES !

All the prog fans in our school spit in disgust at the 'pop' people joining their beloved progressive rock group that mean something and can really play their instruments, while the punkers just laffed. and laffed.

Was there another day like it?

Dave Q to thread.

Not even remotely amusing, but I do remember much being made of the possibility of Jimmy Pursey and Dave Tregunna of then rapidly-disintegrating Sham 69 merging with the remnants of Sex Pistols (Steve Jones & Paul Cook) to form some sort of punk supergroup tentatively to be called Sham Pistols < shudder >. I believe there were even a couple of gigs.

The Drama reissue on Rhino is fantastic.

Curiously, on some of the bonus tracks (the instrumentals), Howe/Squire/White do sound kinda punky! Well, new-wavey.

Similarly: What if John Lydon had actually joined Devo, as the band has said was once a possibility?

What if John Lydon had joined Yes!?!?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

or pink floyd? or captain beefheart's magic band?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, though, this couldn't have been THAT great a surprise ... considering how yes-ish so much of the buggles's songs were, as well trevor horn's sometimes john anderson-esque vocals.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

What if Chris Squire and Alan White had joined up with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page to create the world's greatest anti-climax?

dleone (dleone), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, man - I wanna hear that Rhino reissue!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I have a hard time envisioning how that "XYZ" thing was supposed to work. I just can't imagine Squire's lead bass meshing with Page's multilayered studio creations.

DRAMA by Yes: Lost Classic or Justified Dud?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yes is like genesis, in that i read such GLOWING reviews of their recordings here by people whose judgments i respect and trust -- so i give them a 2d chance and listen to them, and STILL i don't like it all that much.

well, maybe not quite the same thing, but there were a lot of indie rock fans spitting in disgust at each other the day tommy stinson showed on a p. diddy record, while suge knight just laffed. and laffed.

more spit was spat when tommy showed up in gnr, while bob stinson just laffed and laffed (and perhaps displayed a bit of envy) from the great beyond.

Kinda like me and microhouse artists.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Why oh why, aside from money, of course, did Joe Walsh, who fronted a perfectly viable James Gang, and had a pretty good thing going with his solo career, join The Eagles?

jim wentworth (wench), Saturday, 13 March 2004 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna drop a bomb (for me) here: I don't think I've ever realized that XYZ was Squire, Page and Plant. Like, I've heard of it and all, but never much in the way of detail. Did Plant really leave after one rehearsal? What do the demos consist of?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 13 March 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

xyz was squire, alan white and page. "XYZ" = ex Yes and Zep. tee hee.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Saturday, 13 March 2004 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone here heard all those Yes boots on slsk? "Live Story of Relayer"? The early Drama demos? Do those have Jon? Should I care?

What if John Lydon had joined Yes!?!?
