First off, thanks for making me some space on the couch. I'll try not to shit on the cushions.
I hadn't heard of Weed Tunes. I'll do a bit more reading over there. Seems like a good idea.
OK, on rereading your "music with reference to music without signification", I see your point; but I can't help but wonder if it facilitates an insular appreciation of the music. YES, people taking part in a church choir/streetcorner mc battle/rave/garage session/stadium show appreciate the music in a way that's "fundamental to appreciation of the music" but removed from that context, the music still has meaning, different meaning surely, but that's not necessarily bad. Some "richness and resonance" is lost in ANY case when art is removed from its natural setting, but new importance and complexity is gained by the view of the "other".
Brings to mind that a urinal taken out of a bathroom becomes art.
Funny you should mention Cobain and Coltrane; there's two examples of sociopaths who probably would still be alive and making music if they hadn't interacted with the world quite as much as they did. But anyway: both of these guys were HARDCORE vinyl (shellac) freaks who were all about the solo listening experience. A record junkie=an mp3 junkie, roight?
Anyway, I don't know exactly what kind of music mp3freaks are gonna make but thus far I imagine Autechre, Kid Koala, cLOUDDEAD and ratatat are reasonable examples and their stuff fascinates me.
Then there's an upside to this solitary stuff too: diversity. We're due for a flood of underground gone aboveground types who have this new access to outofprint obscure tunes and riff off of them to continue in a musical progression and the mp3 thing only aids that. And whattayaknow: here comes a white detroit duo trying out Blind Willie McTell, a nineteen year old new yorker who's all about naughty cabaret and a california girl who sings bluegrass well enough to hang with Ralph Stanley. Here comes the new wave, same as the old wave!

God I hate indie rock.

i can't really see how it's all that different from hosting a pirate radio show where the artists aren't getting paid but are getting promoted. the amount of people going out and buying the music after hearing the show/mp3 are negligable just as the amount of people buying persil automatic after seeing a tv advert are negligable. doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

well Cobain and coltrane would have made diff music (or they might not have made any at all) because the world would be different, and in the same way someone else might have made music instead of them, bcz he/she heard 'life-changing' MP3s.
But ok: I can see what you're saying, its not the only that the musicians wouldn't get paid, its that ppl might stop going to see live music bcz it would be on the web a week later (and that's happening now) etc etc but I look at it as just consuming far more than you would otherwise, and it does encourage the listener to go to more shows (from listening to great live stuff will make ppl want to be there), and to hear diff types of music (and end up talking abt it in message boards such as this one, don't see what the prob is with more online interaction).
I don't like the smug attitude either, but to ask ppl to pay for overpriced CDs is not showing much respect for the consumer.
(by the way I know you seem to be mostly talking abt things like popnose and gabba, I only use slsk).
I have growing CDR collection. I do like it when mixed with my bought recs (much of it 2nd hand in the last couple of years, so no artists getting paid there).
