hornsby easy

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 13 March 2004 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

please elaborate.
Subquestion: Is Ben Folds just Bruce Hornsby with a sense of humour, or is he Elvis Costello without the twitchy nerve endings?

plus he played on that great great bonnie raitt song which sounded enough hornsby that i had to look it up to find out he didn't actually write it. that said i definitely like a handful of ben folds songs - i get weepy thinking about my gf and italy and how she would play 'brick' --> 'nightswimming' --> 'levon' on her radio show and how we'd laff at the ascension of corn but also know we totally bought into the corn and if i thank god it's extremely unlikely i'm gonna hear a radio station stateside play those three back-to-back-to-back cuz i don't think i could handle it.

For some reason they never play Ben Folds version of "Satan is My Master" either. A shame really. That song is fucking hilarious.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Saturday, 13 March 2004 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

they have very different styles of playing also. ben folds does have that big randy newman influence so i guess that makes him ec then.

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 13 March 2004 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

ben folds probably would've been better if he'd followed hornsby instead of newman though. he makes a much better moist towelette than handbuzzer.

Pigpen, Godchaux, Mydland...Hornsby's got concrete balls

Ben Folds writes much better songs when one of his wives leaves him.

Joe Jackson OWNZ them both

Ben Folds Five, 'cause there's only three of 'em which is kinda cool, plus I like the grungey fuzz-bass sound his bassist occasionally utilizes. But give Hornsby credit for giving us (in "The Way It Is") the most obnoxiously memorable piano-hook in any non-Elton John song ever. (A compliment, sorta.)
