Live CDs recorded and sold on the spot: C/D?

I purchased last night (Einstuerzende Neubauten gig) what I expect to be the first of a long series of custom made live recordings, sold immediately after the end of the concert. So what do we think? The future of concert memorabilia or cynical cash-in?

I say classic, although a bit expensive at the moment, esp. when combined, in Neubauten's case, with a pretty smart approach to tackle the changes brought by digital music (ie. development of a fan community, directly supporting the band through financial contributions).

There was a column by Chris Dahlen on Pitchfork (here) . Many of you have probably seen it already, but there's the link anyway.
Since I'm a bootleg freak (not the mashup kind, the LIVE!!! kind) I say classic as well, even though the evil Clear Channel is involved.

I haven't yet been to a gig where this has been offered. Perhaps it's not being done in Canada?

Just to clarify, I meant "There was a column on this subject by Chris Dahlen ... "

Gordon Downie's solo tour had this in Canada.

They just started doing this at a bunch of clubs in Chicago. There was a story in the local weekly about it:

Could be a great thing, but it's doesn't seem like it's quite there yet.

Surely the Neubaten recording wasn't through Clear Channel, but an independent application of the idea? Not much sense leaving record labels behind if you're in bed with Clear Channel.

No, it wasn't Clear Channel, rest assured. The technology's there so theoretically anybody can use it. I think the equipment is travelling with Neubauten (rather than belonging to the venue itself).

sounds like a nice idea, in a way.

at least this way the CDs won't be clogging the new-releases bins. (or the used-CD bins either, judging from the fact that this company sent me a couple CDs and no one would buy them off me!)

Which company, matos? the Emusic one in the Reader story or one of the Clear Channel discs? I'm curious to hear how good the sound quality is compared to a polished live disc.
