I sincerely hope this email I got forwarded was a joke:
CLEVELAND, Oh. (AP) – Pete Wentz of the rock band, Fall Out Boy, will become the youngest ever musician, at 29, to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at next year’s induction ceremony, according to a press release sent out today by the museum’s staff.
“It is a great honor to announce that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has decided to reach out to younger listeners by inducting the frontman of one of today’s most challenging and successful bands, Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy,” read the press release. “Wentz is an inspiration for all younger people and a role model, using music as a way to battle depression and turn his life around.”
The point refers to Wentz’s battles with bipolar disorder.
Wentz spoke to the AP on the announcement: “It’s really fantastic, and it’s absolutely just so huge. I’m really glad that they’ve all, the people at the Hall of Fame, have decided that our music can be just as exciting as the Stones or the Beatles. Their previous decisions could seem elitist, and that’s alienated a lot of folks, I think.”
A number of music professionals have been wary of this development. Robert Christgau, who has written for Blender and Rolling Stone, described the announcement as “a real shame, like seeing Paul McCartney start to make silly little love songs or something like that. A Hall of Fame needs perspective, time, and distance to really figure things out.”
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame broke their personal rule of waiting 25 years after a band’s first album before placing them up for induction. When the AP contacted the museum about this, they said that the move was primarily to get “teens and twenty-something’s involved more in their own musical and cultural heritage.”
Other sources have claimed that falling ratings for the award shows and slumps in traditional CD sales are more likely to blame.

probably a hoax, AP search turns up nothing
― 鬼の手 (Edward III), Thursday, 16 April 2009 18:48 (sixteen years ago)
Put it like this. There's nothing on the AP, and the Christgau quote screams "spoof".

And the reason not to induct this guy is??

That's my point. They let fucking Billy Joel in for god's sake.
― Bill Magill, Thursday, 16 April 2009 19:05 (sixteen years ago)
You fools, don't you know Wentz played third tambourine on a Clapton album when he was four (Mom knew the Clapper from the old days, called in a favor). Ergo, he qualifies!
― The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 16 April 2009 19:07 (sixteen years ago)
Oh yeah, and they let eric clapton in too. So this Wentz character fits right in.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can't be taken seriously when they refuse to put Rush in there.

"The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can't be taken seriously when they refuse to put Rush in there.

that might be the only argument FOR taking them seriously.

I understand people hating on Rush, that's nothing new. But they've been around with the same lineup for over 35 years, consistently putting out new releases. They stage massive tours, have had many hits, have a huge fanbase, have influenced many bands, etc. Very few rock bands have achieved as much as they have. There is no reason they shouldn't be in there.
― Moodles, Friday, 17 April 2009 17:49 (sixteen years ago)
I agree, get them in there with all the rest of the boring old guys
― Just one thing I was thinking about as I was getting on the copter (J0hn D.), Friday, 17 April 2009 17:50 (sixteen years ago)
I don't want Rush in. Just like I don't want the Stooges, Sabbath, Yes or anyone else whose gotten snubbed to get in and share space with the mediocrities that have been "honored".
― Bill Magill, Friday, 17 April 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)
They should put a statue of Eric Clapton at the entrance. He seems to be the archetype of the HOF vibe.

― 4,000 hoes in blackburn, lancashire (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 17 April 2009 18:03 (sixteen years ago)
I admit. But hasnt he been admitted like 5 different times for all the bands he's been in plus solo? His solo shit beats Ambien for inducing sleep.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 17 April 2009 18:04 (sixteen years ago)
um. not sure. at least twice.
blind faith record is good...um...derek and the dominos....most of cream....yardbirds shit w/him was pretty tuff r&b shit....some classic rock joints like "cocaine" and stuff like that....never heard the mayall stuff, would imagine it's decent at least, but yeah the cult is annoying but you could do worse at the end of the day.
― 4,000 hoes in blackburn, lancashire (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 17 April 2009 18:07 (sixteen years ago)
"forever man" is pretty offical IMO
I don't like the 80s Clapton stuff at all, Matt. And when he tries to do the blues it feels like such an academic exercise. I'll rep for Blind Faith, that's definitely good stuff. I prefer Beck solo, not necessarily the Stewart/Wood stuff, but the mid-70s stabs at jazz. I love those records.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 17 April 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)
I think I set a record for the use of the word "stuff" in that post, a word I never actually speak.

Sabbath were embalmed by the HOF in '06, Bill.

Really?? that sucks.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 17 April 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)
HOF is so dumb, but as there is one it's pretty fecking silly the Rush isn't it. The band that launched a thousand Canadian tuxedos.
And totally insane that T. Rex isn't either.
― hugo, Friday, 17 April 2009 20:34 (sixteen years ago)
So...did anybody actually watch the '09 induction ceremony? I thought DMC's thank-you-speech was most OTM of the night...Metallica was pretty uninspiring...and I kind of like Metallica...always a pleasure to see Smokey Robinson, too bad he wasn't in on the "all-star jam" at the end...
Jeff Beck though! Right?
― chocolatepiekid, Saturday, 18 April 2009 01:49 (sixteen years ago)
They should follow their own rules, plus if they choose to break the rules and actually induct somebody more recent, there are probably hundreds of names that would deserve it more. This guy is forgotten in 2 years.
― Geir Hongro, Saturday, 18 April 2009 08:12 (sixteen years ago)
I can only hope to forget the vast majority of people inducted into this place.
― Bill Magill, Monday, 20 April 2009 17:26 (sixteen years ago)
The big flaw in this institution is that people are permitted to leave the building after induction.
