Discuss the UK Top 40 14/3/04 amongst yourselves

Dad has given me very big and complicated documents to analyse and cut and paste and shit, and I haven't a clue what to do. I tried doing a rundown at the same time. But the Jamie Cullum song (#12, his cover of 'frontin'') pushed me way beyond the bounds. I can't fucking multi task this. So, discuss among yourselves the hilarities of the album chart, Graham coxon's sort-of historic achievement at #37, etc, etc.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 14 March 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

So, yeah, Coxon becomes first 7 inch single to crack the top 40 in fifty years or something, The Vines and Jet fail to save rock by only charting in the 20s, Roger from Sister Sister has a top 20 single with the aid of Joe Budden, Outkast finally leave the top ten after 19 years, Phixx get ready to be dropped from their label by only making #13, Cullum releases the worst single of the year at #12, Fountains of Wayne just miss out on the top ten at #11, Black Eyed Peas continue to suck at 6 or 7 or something, Enrique and Kelis aren't that bad at #5.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 14 March 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

#4- Peter Andre. The proceeds from this single are being donated to charity. I feel sorry for the poor cunt.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 14 March 2004 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

#3 Jennifer Lopez. This is her fifth single to chart at #3. That makes a strange kind of sense.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 14 March 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

fountains of wayne reminds me of wheatus.
this is NOT a good thing btw.

Stacey's Mom = The Cars + Bloodhound Gang

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 14 March 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Did that Jam reissue last year or year before or something sneak into mid-30s purely on 7" sales also? I may have this entirely wrong. Why are there so many old men in the top 10 albums this week/how does Harry Connick Jr still have a career etc etc

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 14 March 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Hah, Harry Connick Jnr is the youngest new entry in the album charts this week. I think Lionel Richie is the second youngest. Old people are taking over.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 14 March 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Broken-bucket-face Jamie C can be honorary old gent maybe. In the rarefied company of the upper reaches of current album chart Jamelia and Will Young are suddenly looking kind of LightningBolt-ish. A decade ago this (or possibly last) week Tiger Bay was in the albums top 10/ALL FIELDS ROUND HERE WHEN I WERE A LAD and suchlike

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 14 March 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

We are now going to get a week of Alexis Petridis articles on the seismic shift involved in music now.

John Barry's score for "Midnight Cowboy", isn't it?

chris j (chris j), Sunday, 14 March 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ricardo (RickyT), Sunday, 14 March 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 14 March 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

You didn't hear it= YOU WILL NEVER KNOW MY PAIN

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 14 March 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Ohmigod, I've just realised: JAY-Z. He doesn't do Jay-Z's part as well does he? Please say that he doesn't. Please.

Ricardo (RickyT), Sunday, 14 March 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

No, he doesn't. He does jazz solo instead, I think.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 14 March 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Why not get Zane Lowe in to do the Jay-Z bit? Britain's premier Jay-Z impressionist, ain't he?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 14 March 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"How you think I got the name Lowe?"

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 14 March 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

He needs his own Beyonce, though. How about Claire Goose?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 14 March 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Or Claire Balding?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 14 March 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

NEMONE!

Or not.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 14 March 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread has taken a disturbing turn.

"Right, so, my body's too bootylicious for you baby... how did that come about? Yeah, great"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 14 March 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't suggest Vicky Marsden. Be thankful.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 14 March 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The nauseating thing about his "Frontin'" is that I think he originally did in the Live Lounge at Radio 1, suggesting that it's been released "by popular demand".

*shudders*

I can't believe I'm getting this worked up over a a cover of a song I didn't even like that much anyway, but I guess that's a measure of it's effect.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

this is the kind of thing you get when the people who would once have idolised John Betjeman are now the children of Martin Wiener.

phoebe dinsmore's bastard nephew (robin carmody), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it's been released by popular demand.. it's more of a clever strategy by Cullum's record company (if people at record companies can be clever).

Before the Brits, Cullum had already cracked Radio 2, and (most of) its audience. But he still haven't had Radio 1 airplay, because it was jazz. So since he was guarenteed some airplay due to his session as the build up to the Brits, some one came up with the idea that he should do some current hip hop song. And Voila.. He's been on the Radio 1 playlist ever since. Very Clever

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 15 March 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Did I read incorrectly, or did Bubba Sparxxx only make #55 this week? What an absolute pisser.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 15 March 2004 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Which Bubba song was it? "Back In The Mud"?

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 15 March 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Deliverance.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 15 March 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 15 March 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i think Bubba will be considered a one-hit wonder here (despite Top 40 performance of 'Lovely')

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 March 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

the video borrows wholesale from 'O Brother Where Art Thou' doesn't it? Timba plays the black kid with the guitar!

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 March 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Robert Johnson character? Is Tim planning on meeting with Chris Martin at a Mississippi crossroads then?
