Classic Or Dud: Classic or DUD?

The greatest phenomenon to ever strike "I Love Music", or is it time to hold a moratorium for this particular thread?

Bring back the "Best Albums of ALL TIME beginning with the letter..." thread, I say.

I think we should do the obvious and hold each of ourselves up to this. Ned Raggett, classic or dud? Or more amusingly, search and destroy. Which of my rants do you actually value and which should be shot and buried in the backyard? ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's pointless because we're all clearly classics. Anyhow.

Erm, I think a moratorium might be good because, quite frankly, half of the bands discussed have no right to even be mentioned in the same breath as the word "classic" - not even a value judgement, just a judgement on how long they been around, how much impact they've had. It's like, why not a CLASSIC OR DUD: SOUP DRAGONS! for fuck's sake?

I think maybe a rename. Since obviously this being FT I am not interested in whether a band is classic in the Q Book Of Rock History sense, just whether its a classic in people's personal pop pantheon. Even the Soup Dragons.

I will put my gimmick thinking cap on.

I like 'classic or dud'. Erm, that's all really. I LIKE it.

The way I see it, music crit. can be either breath or depth oriented -- Classic or Dud tends to lose the comparative/relational aspect that I enjoy.

Classic of course, the best and simplest way to start a discussion.

Classic, for sure. The most reliably stimulating of all the stock ILM discussion points.

Though perhaps someone should do a Classic or Dud poll for individual website articles. I know which I'd vote for as the highest and lowest point of Elidor, certainly.

twelve years pass...

The Classic or Dud format - we don't really use this much any more do we? I've found that I also no longer really think of music and music acts in binary classic or dud terms any more, whereas maybe beforehand I did. It leads me to wonder whether the use of c/d in ILM's earlier days has come to shape discourse on the board and whether this has changed overall more recently - like, rather than asking if ABBA were subjectively a good or bad band and then arguing over it, we're now more likely to do an ABBA poll where fans discuss the back catalogue and curious parties can delve in as they like.
