Patti Smith - Trampin'

Due to be released on April 27th according to AMG - and an absolute scorcher if the review in this month's Mojo is anything to go by.

Has anyone here heard it yet?

Is it really as good as Mojo's 5-star review would seem to suggest?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

is anything at all as good as its 5-star Mojo review? answer is almost always no, isn't it?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The fuckin Jayhawks "Sound of Lies" horror put me off Mojoism for life.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"The MOJO Masterpiece award"

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh come on Stewart, 5-star Mojo review of revered has-been? Hardly a novelty is it?

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Who wrote the review Stewart?

NickB (NickB), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's a good record, tho

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 15 March 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"is anything at all as good as its 5-star Mojo review? answer is almost always no, isn't it?"
"Oh come on Stewart, 5-star Mojo review of revered has-been? Hardly a novelty is it?"

I agree entirely - if I was prepared to automatically accept the opinion of Mojo at face value I wouldn't have asked the question!

What I'm really interested in ascertaining is whether this really is a major return to form that's maybe been greeted just slightly over-enthusiastically; or if it's just another poor to average album that's been ridiculously and massively over-hyped for no discernible reason.

"Who wrote the review Stewart?"

Dunno, haven't got my copy with me.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 15 March 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe this will be any good - the last couple have been so bloody awful....

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 15 March 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

just another poor to average album that's been ridiculously and massively over-hyped for no discernible reason.

All bets are off on this being the scenario.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 15 March 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I know you're probably right - I just really want it to be the best thing she's done since Easter, rather than just the best thing she's done since last Easter.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 15 March 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

wasn't trying to jump down yr throat as much as Mojo's there, Stewart

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ditto

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, it's too late, you've made me cry now.

And on my birthday too.

Bastards.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Go and listen to "Don's Birthday Party", that'll dry yer tears

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Given that 'Gung Ho,' IMHO, was the best thing she's done since 'Easter,' I find it plausable that she could do it again. I will admit to a bit of pro-Patti prejudice, just because she is among the waycoolest folks ever to come down the 'pike, but I think that is reason enough. You know, somebody being talented, energetic, and creative and all tends to do it for me, and I cannot hold her staying power & determination not to become a cliche' against her. Call me crazy, but I like good artists even when they've been around for a while. But even I didn't like 'Wave' very much... :-)

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Monday, 15 March 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Who wrote the review Stewart?

David Fricke (Rolling Stone, I think?)

the last couple have been so bloody awful

Have to agree. I love Patti Smith but I don't think I've played Gung Ho since the week I bought it.

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Even if it turns out not to be as great as Fricke says I like the fact they've given it such a prominent and positive review. I hope it marks a return to form and they get the production right. The last couple haven't done much for me, but she remains an incredible live performer. Really looking forward to seeing her on Wednesday and Thursday.

Colin Pritchard (pop zeus), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't stand her or her stupid little boy toy Oliver Ray, a talentless starfucker.

shookout, Monday, 15 March 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

As someone who has bought all of the recent Patti Smith albums in their week of release and not listened to them since, I feel comforted by this thread. I did like that "Summer Cannibals" song, though.

southern lights (southern lights), Monday, 15 March 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
Did this really come out last month? Did anyone hear it? Opinions?

rainman (rainman), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian Penman battered the album to death in last month's Wire.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

And one of the most entertaining batterings I've witnessed in many a year it was

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't find the review online. Though it sounds like quite a contrast to the Mojo and AMG raves.

rainman (rainman), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed, it was honest for a start

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
i've never liked patti smith. i heard a track called 'peaceable kingdom' on beeb 6 and thought 'that's great! wonder which album it's on'. and guess what?! is this patti smith's 'up' ?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Its great. I like the band's production. Its not as glossy as Gung Ho was, which is a good thing. There's some good ol' noise in spots; some of the songs are very hummable, but, like some of the best moments on 'Dream of Life,' they avoid getting too sappy. I'm down with it.
