A close friend of mine from the (just barely) pre-hip-hop generation has never had much good to say about rap or modern R&B. Still, he’s hardly an intractable curmudgeon, and seemed really interested when I offered to make him a mix CD of Timbaland-produced tracks. He’s not a radio listener, so I’m sure he hasn’t even heard the most overplayed Tim tracks, but that also leaves the field wide open and, in many ways, overwhelming, considering the number of great songs linked to Timbaland’s name. I searched the ILM archives, but most of the other Timbaland threads petered out around 2001. So much has happened since then - JT, more Jay-Z, more Missy, more Bubba, et al. – that I figured now was a good time to open this up to ILM.

Basically, what 20 or so Timbaland tracks should I burn to a disc to give my friend a good overview of what the guy’s capable of?

yeah, I think it's just a 'teaser', not the actual lead single, which apparently will be a Kanye production. after Tim bragged so much about the work he's been doing with Brandy, I'm sure this news has sent him spiraling into another bout of depression, diving into a carton of ice cream and listening to Coldplay.

Thanks for the help. I ended up burning a set similar to the suggested five disc beast above, with each entry padded with a couple more songs and the leftovers arranged into a (strong) sixth volume. Maybe one of these days I'll decide a volume seven (!) will be in order, but its nice to have what I have in one place. I'll just lend the lot to my friend and see what he says!
